  • The first day of our trip along the #TheGreatWestWay starting at Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol and ending Bath.
    The Great West Way® is a 125-mile touring route from London to Bristol which utilises the south west’s ancient routes which pass through the beautiful English countryside. You can find out more at www.greatwestway.co.uk

    Our first stop was at the impressive Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the Avon gorge. Brunel’s bridge is a Grade 1 listed structure that first opened in 1864. We were lucky to take a trip down into the vaults under the tower of the Clifton Suspension bridge on the Leigh Woods side.

    Amazingly, as there was no entrance to the vaults it was assumed they were solid and it wasn’t until 2002 when replacing paving a very small entrance was discovered into the chambers.
    You can read more about the fascinating vaults of Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge here www.cliftonbridge.org.uk/vaults
    After Bristol, it was on to Bath and a look around the Jane Austen Centre, you can even dress up in Regency costumes if you want to.
    We actually have stayed in a house in Bath where Jane Austen used to live: • A Stay At Jane Austen'...
    In the afternoon it was time for a cream tea at the Roseate Villa before more beer and food at The Bath Brew House.

      They didn't rediscover those vaults until 2002. They were forgotten about for over 150 years.

      @@flydriveexplore - It is amazing that nobody realized that there were vaults for that long.

    The tour guide really seemed to know her stuff! And wow, it looks crazy underneath! Good thing they make you wear hardhats lol.

      The guide's background was 'industrial archaeology' so perfect for the buildings and bridges of the Industrial Revolution.

    Why am I not surprised that you are doing the route in reverse. This is a very cool bridge. It’s almost like your in a cave.

      We had to start somewhere, sp why not the end. Those vaults were like across between a cathedral and a cave.

      The route is very interesting and in our short trip we discovered some beautiful towns, villages and historic sites. We are thinking of going back in Spring when it warms up a bit, we had to cut our trip short because of the snow.

    This is amazing you went inside the bridge :) how was the vegan burger?

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  5 років тому

      It needed some ketchup! - The burger that is, not the bridge!

    Lovely bridge. What is the vault meant for?

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  5 років тому

      The vaults are just part of the construction but they didn't know they were there for over 150 years. They were re-discovered by accident in 2002.

    It looks so amazing down there!! That's interesting that you got a vegan burger when you're not even vegan. Any particular reason why? I'm guessing more healthy?? Looked great!!

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  5 років тому

      Yes, the vaults were amazing. I'm not a big fan of red meat and this year, vegetarian burgers have all now been transformed into vegan burgers.

    Why were the vaults necessary?

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  2 роки тому

      They were the foundations to the towers. No one new they were vaults and thought they were solid as they didn't really understand Brunel's engineering.
