David L. Ball and Dr. Emma Whitten are 2 of the finest organists in America let alone the state of California, and Christ Cathedral is beyond blessed to have them. They really are a true gift from God.
How fun - two of the world's finest organists! So glad the organ has finally returned, hope you are having a blast with the endless discoveries! The cathedral is blessed to have you, David.
Ok…. I’ve been slightly critical so far, and I was pretty convinced it was just due to the way it was recorded etc. at the time. But this, is the Hazel Wright Organ!
I'm so glad that building remained a church and that magnificent instrument was kept and maintained. I didn't know it had two manuals, though. How exciting!
I remember from watching the Hour of Power with Robert Schueller that there was a console on the altar, and one up in the rear balcony. The choir sometimes would sing from up there and the organist would play that console.
Sorry but at 1:25 onwards there’s a whole load of mistakes - certainly not what’s written and it just sounded rushed and a blur of noise - I’m sure most organists who play this piece can spot the mistakes instantly
This goes back to when it was known as the Crystal Cathedral when they would have stage performances during Christmas and Easter taking up the front of the sanctuary. A temporary stage would be made which would be built on top of where the choir would normally be. Since the choir couldn't be at the front of the church, they had the gallery fitted for use for the choir which is why there was a secondary console. Of course the secondary console couldn't be as massive as the main console due to space on the gallery.
This is now a Roman Catholic Cathedral. For centuries, wherever possible, the Mass has utilized a Great organ and a Choir organ with two orangists - each filling a unique position. Recall the Notre Dame fire when the choir organ was totally destroyed and the long-time organist, Yves Castagnet, shared his heartbreak with the world. Christ Cathedral is helping us heal; thanks be to God , to David Ball and to Emma Whitten.
@@SoCalCath I kinda of feel the same way. We may have temporarily lost Notre Dame due to the fire in April 2019, but later on in July of that same year we gained Christ Cathedral. And when Nantes Cathedral suffered a terrible fire, and we lost their organ from it, we then regained Hazel 2 years later. Goes to show the power of God working his wonders in rebuking Satin, take away a Cathedral, another one comes, destroy a pipe organ, another one gets restored. Praise and Thanks be to God.
I would recommend to listen to scotduo channel playing this wonderful piece. I am really disappointed in how they played it in this video, they tried to sound impressive by playing it a bit faster, but failed with so many mistakes, even amateur organist could play that better.
Wonderful performances. Hope you'll share more duets. I'm listening-viewing on my high definition large screen home theatre system with a subwoofer. The frequency response of the organ is excellent. The pedal stops resonate and much of the Cathedral's natural ambience is captured nicely. A blessing to be able to attend these special recital events online (definitely better than listening with earbuds).
Just TRIED to listen to this again thinking I may have been unfair in my previous comments but actually I was quite reserved. Ball, as others have said, from 1.27 onwards completely destroys this piece. The mistakes made are unforgivable - certainly not what’s written and the pace is ridiculous. Poor Emma trying to keep up with him. It’s embarrassing.

WONDERFUL
One of my favorite pieces!! Love it!
A scintillating performance 👏🏼 Bravo
Splendid! Superb! What an organ, and what organists!
Incredible. I’m glad they still have both consoles
Amazing!!!
1.29-1.39 what the heck?!
Bravo!
That’s incredible!
A mighty duet!
Marvelous!
Magnificent!
What it must have been like to sit in the cathedral and hear the dialogue from all directions!
I was there when this was performed!

Two *consoles* for 10 "manuals" and two pedalboards! 😉

I definitely did. Sounded like Dr Ball just needed a bit more practice. I know he's a competent organist.
This place looks like the grand court in a shopping mall.
Beautiful but why does the Cathedral need two consoles?

Because Jesus said so.
So they can perform this.

Can someone help me with the title of the piece. Thanks
It’s in the video title: Grand Chœur Dialogué by Eugène Gigout.

Some parts of the duet seemed Rushed and I've heard too many blundering mistake including being in the wrong key. I wasn't impressed, Sorry.
Why did they put the former main console in the old loft. And they changed the keyboard from natural wood to white.
Two consoles, for two organs? ……or just one?

Ball is making lots of mistakes. He needs to slow it down a touch and be more accurate - especially on that instrument and in that building

Well Ok, at least Balls' coat and shoes match! Barely competent
As an organist myself, this video was not enjoyable at all. Too many mistakes. And 1:27 was disastrous.
What the hell is this mess?
WAY WAY TOO FAST!!!
