South Tyrol (Italian Alto Adige, Sudtirolo, Ladin South Tyrol), official Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol, is the northernmost province of Italy and, together with the province of Trento, the autonomous region of Trentino Alto Adige. Since the extended autonomy came into force in 1972, South Tyrol enjoys extensive self-governing rights and is accordingly called an "autonomous province" or "country". The area in the middle of the Alps has about 520,000 inhabitants, its capital is Bolzano.
South Tyrol is one of those areas of Italy with a strong regional culture. This is due to the Bavarian and Roman settlements as well as the historically grown ties to the German language and cultural area, in particular to the northern neighbor Austria, to which it belonged until 1919. The European unification movement enables cross-border cooperation with the other parts of the historical region of Tyrol, which has been at the beginning of institutional integration since the founding of the European Region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino.
With regard to linguistic-cultural differentiation, the population currently consists of more than 62% German-speaking and about 23% Italian-speaking South Tyroleans. About 4% of the population, mainly in the Dolomite area, belong to the Ladin language group. Intra- and extra-European migration, especially since the 1990s, has led to further diversification of population composition.
The largely rural South Tyrol is one of the wealthiest areas in Italy and the European Union. Economically, the country along the Brenner transit route was for a long time predominantly agricultural. Since the second half of the 20th century, services such as commerce, transport and tourism have played a prominent role.
