The idea of comparing these three decades is so fascinating! I didn't think I liked 90's style until I saw it in this light, and the simplicity of it made it seem the most wearable to me now. My favorite, I think, is the 70's Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. :)
Fascinating! The outfits from the 90's still look modern to me, and very wearable. And as you say, I'm still strongly influenced by those styles today, without even being aware of it. They seem more timelessly classic to me than the other styles you showed us.
I was born in ‘53 and much prefer the examples from the previous eras over current fashion. I don’t often see fashion as classy as it used to be. Great video Justine, as always!
Yes! I completely agree with you. I was born in 1961 and I remember clothes being of better quality and lasting longer. I go to the mall and am appalled by the materials being used and the lack of clothes that I would call flattering to your figure, especially for a shorter person.
I agree with that. Although not born in the 50's or 60's, but my parents are and and they talk a lot about the difference in clothes and how a person could wear one item for the longest time because of its quality, the fabrics, the great fit. I also prefer that and don't like that now, everything is aimed at financial gain without giving much value in return. It happens even with more expensive brands. I personally have a hard time finding good clothes, either the fit is bad, the way it's made, its fabric or style.
I was born in '55, so remember many decades also (always interested in fashion!). The runways have definitely always been more over the top, even if some influences come down to the streets. I was wearing jeans with t-shirts and a blazer (or a jean vest or jacket) on top in the 70's already (and do the same today).... but I have to say, the 80's to me, now in retrospect anyway, were the worst time with big hair and baggy clothes. Luckily the GAP (store) came along and it was easy to get very basic casual clothes there that were and are timeless. What I like about today, is that we can wear any length skirt, and almost anything goes. I grew up in Finland, where at least in the 70's people all looked alike, because nobody dared to look too different! Since then I've lived in the UK and the US.... seen a lot of fashion changes. I find younger people these days (here in the US anyway) wearing a lot of cheap clothing and believing they have high fashion! Unfortunately many younger girls here are getting very over-weight as well, but still wear bad quality, skimpy clothing doesn't look good. I am totally hooked on Justine's videos! Love everyone of them! Thank you for all of your knowledge and effort - and then sharing them!
I've seen Nice styles...I have a feeling Justine shows the worst. And I don't know...vetements kind of goes for tacky to shake up the industry. 1998 fashion example are actually the types of clothes you might see more on the streets today.
Such an interesting review of fashion Justine...thank you so much for sharing your insight and knowledge with us. I have lived through all three decades and I must say that being a young woman in the 90's was a joy and I still love the clean minimalism and luxury of some of the fabrics with subtle contrasts and beautiful silhouettes that stem from this decade. From what I remember, there was an economic downturn at this juncture also so fashion definitely became less frivolous to reflect this. In Ireland, where I'm from John Rocha was a big name and he moved into the international fashion scene in theses years. There are a lot of items from your 90's photos that are still very relevant today and which I would definitely wear. The '78 photos were interesting. All the ladies at the Chanel show reminded me of the British PM Margaret Thatcher's style...not a personal favourite but I loved what YSL was doing at this time and DF also, for making clothing so feminine and celebrating the female form. ..always a good move!
The DvF wrap dress will ALWAYS be in fashion. For my high school graduation/18th birthday, I got an amazing DvF gown, long, bustier and dark blue silk. It's very classic but therefore will always be in style. I think that she is a true master designer: Her clothes are trendy but not so offensively that you would look out of place in another decade. She has created many modern classics. And her lips logo is just iconic. Beside her amazing work as a designer, I think she's also a great humanitarian who encourages girl power in all fields all over the world, from sending girls to school in rural African regions to promoting more women in power positions in the "Western World". She's awesome. :)
Honestly, I would wear none of the outfits that you showed for 2018, but almost all of the ones you showed for 1998 and the wrap dress for sure. I was born in the 70's so maybe I'm just getting too old :) My tastes have changed a lot over the years though and I am drawn to simple, classic 'wearable' clothes. I love the time and effort you put into your videos, they are alwys interesting and definitely give me food for thought.
The clean lines of the mid 90's were wonderful and I miss those. I had beautiful pant suits back then just like those shown in your video. These days I feel that fashion is only directed towards the very young and being above 40 I often feel excluded for whole fashion seasons at a time.
The wrap dress and tailored trousers/suits are definitely timeless pieces. My favourite decade is 98 because of the neutral colours and the minimalism. Helmut Lang was a genius.
mzChocoSensualHedbob suits are easily dated and go out of style. Overall cut ( baggy or form-fitting), lapel size, number of buttons etc all change over time. Then you have things like dress shirts, shoes, ties which also vary and don't remain "timeless". Just look at suits from the 70s and 80s vs today
The wrap dress style has remained a staple dress, but DVF has changed small details to update the style to match current trends. The collar size and sleeves change.
Kristen I disagree. Suits - or at least it's separate pieces (trousers and jacket) are always updated to suit the current era. When I was talking about the suit I wasn't referring to the structure of the 80s or 70s clearly. I was talking about the suit as an actual 2 piece garment that women have been wearing for decades.
This is fascinating! While I consider the minimalism of the 90s to be the most wearable that could be because I graduated from high school in 1996. Knowing what I do now, I wonder how much of 90s fashion minimalism was a reaction to the death of Kurt Cobain and "grunge" as a movement. Grunge was all about extras: accessories (hats, gloves, chunky boots), extra layers, baggy clothes--the precursor of the "hobo chic" that seems to be the avant-garde trend of today. I see a definite grunge influence in those oversized, heavily layered designs. This makes me wonder if we're heading towards a neo-minimalism trend, especially with the rising popularity of tiny homes, co-habitation spaces, and so on. The seventies fashions definitely seem class-defined: DVF's wrap dress is iconic because it held universal appeal and was accessible to all price points--and it's also minimalist, as it has no fasteners, no trim, no bulk, nothing to hide the body at all--one could say that DVF was the original minimalist influence. Androgyny in fashion has always been avant-garde, but when I saw those double-front-pleated pants my thoughts immediately went to the double-front-pleated slacks that the men of the preppy set wore in the 90s. I can't think of anything less flattering, lol! I guess the point I'm trying to make is that although the styles seem dissimilar, they are not as different as we would like to believe. What has been done before is definitely influencing what is happening today.
This was such an interesting video! I love seeing the evolution of clothes and their history/why and when different trends occur that define a decade. It would be so cool if you continue this as a series of bringing us the obvious and the forgotten fashion trends of history, especially of the last century since i guess it was the century where clothing changed the most/fastest. I really enjoy listening/watching you♡♡♡
Actually, I would wear almost all you have shown from 90's today...I think it's a great illustration of time delay needed for fashion shows to reach every day's aesthetics. While being a teen in 90's all I can remember wearing were low waist jeans and crop top :)
Iulia Blaga You might wanna check out Karolina... Zebrovska (? hopefully I got that right, ) Historical Get Ready With Me If you don't know her already
Justine, I would love to see a series with you when you take on the fashion from different decades of the twentieth century. Talking everyday wear, couture and perhaps some "fun facts" about something that was special that decade.
Merci, Justine. You helped focus and put the finger on the spirit of each decade, thus making me understand better the more abstract idea I had of those fashions. I was born in 1970 and mostly remember my mom wearing jeans with long belted sweaters, a long and lean silhouette. The 80s were my youth and I absolutely relished the fashion at the time. I wore neon colors with black cut off lace gloves (thank you, Madonna), wide rubber belts, mini skirts with tennis shoes, and had a Duran Duran hair cut. As adulthood set in the 90s it was a nuclear winter in a post apocalyptic world. I was not a fan. Nowadays I collect and wear DVF dresses, old and new, and style them with anything from antique jewelry to cotton tank top (older dresses are cut to tight for a busty figure). Other timeless staples are dark denim with silk tops and good boots or flats, artisan-made bags, and vintage jewelry. Could this look have worked in previous decades? I’m not entirely sure. It’s easier to look back and critic the fashion of those times, but harder to tell what a 1978 person would think of what we wear now.
I was born in 1978. I still love the style of the late 90's and the wrap dress is a wardrobe staple for me. I feel like the runway trends of today are so far off from actual street style. Now that I am a mom, I worry less about keeping up with trends and focus more on just looking put together.
I would love to see a video on highlights of the 2000-2010. The early 00s was a wild era for fashion, looking back you wonder how what was acceptable 15 years ago would be a total disaster today.
Another really interesting video - Thanks Justine. I was in my 20's in the 90's and it is definitely reflected in my personal style. To this day I love monochrome looks with the interest is present in the textures or with a pop of colour in an accessory. The other thing I still love are interesting shapes put together but in really wearable ways.
Another great video Justine! I would totally wear the 70's looks. They actually seem wearable today as well, especially Diane Von Furstenberg's dresses. I also love the white 70's dress.
Really interesting video!! My go to dress shape is a wrap dress and I have kept the same ones for years because they are so classic and flattering. Also LOVE menswear...love the High/low trend with it too. Something about tailored clothing which makes me feel confident! 😊😊😊❤️
Another great video. I like 90s fashion because of the minimalism and neutral colours. The pieces are simpler compared to our decade. I see young people wearing thrifted outfits looking like they stepped out of the 90s, it's a big trend here in Latvia. Also your JL Catherine Necklace on the website is really nice, hoping to order it some day.
Since I am older I have been imerced in fashion since the 60's. I have seen every trend come around again but always with a new twist. I loved the rich fabrics, colored and tailored look of the 70's. I do love the constant change and new ideas every season.
As one who has lived through the 50’ to the present, I have love for something in each decade. Special love for the 60’s, my teen years in a French Lycée in Tokyo. The Japanese women were very reluctant to embrace the mini skirt (Mary Quant) as they were very self-conscious about their short, thick legs. Meanwhile at the Lycée, smack in the center of Tokyo, we girls had our mothers or tailors shorten our skirts and dresses to a micro mini length. We wore bell bottoms, see-through blouses, thick ties in Windsor knots, gogo boots, pale pink lipstick, blue eyeshadow... However, I love the present the best, when all fashion “rules” are ignored, when anything goes. It unleashed my creativity! Freedom of choices!
I liked the YSL suits from the 70s, with the hats and feminine blouses. The short jackets and trousers looked easy to wear and versatile. I could see them in various materials. Ralph Lauren’s western look was also big then, as I recall.
I feel like there's something I would love to wear in every decade you have shown. Specially the ladys in the wrap dresses (?) from the seventies look fine. I love your videos! Have a great day and a fantastic next week! P.S: I can't remember whether you've done a video about which piece of jewellery (material, shape etc) was particularly popular in which decade or century and which piece of jewellery was an innovation at that time. Lots of love, Charoit
I really enjoyed this video but thanks for making me feel OLD as hell. :p I was alive for all of this. Also, I LOVED the 90s and have yet to fall in love with fashion in the same way as I did then. I loved how the 90s esthetic played with masculine and feminine and I still love to do that in my clothing. I do have a few pieces I bought for my first job that I would wear today. One favorite is a slightly sheer boxy cut black short sleeved button up with a simple small rose print in sort of corally rose tones. I love love love it with jeans and a really snazzy high heeled sandal. It's to me exactly what I want in a piece of clothing. The sheerness and the floral print are the height of femininity and yet the cut is both practical and more masculine. It doesn't flow with your form but as it's sheer and if you don't button the top couple of buttons it FLIRTS with form in a way that to me is infinitely more satisfying.
Kaleidoscopeallie thank you - I also feel OLD😅, having seen the 78s trends through my eyes as a baby on my mom - but isn't it great to notice the history we have lived so far😇? @justine leconte officiel : I never really parted with a sense of esthetics formed in the 90s. thank you so much for the video! (I am not a consumer to reckon with as I can afford only vintage fashion but it is great to share your thoughts on fashion🤗)
Kaleidoscopeallie. I'm 54 so yep, I lived through all of this also. To be honest I really REALLY do not like today's current fashion. It's almost impossible to find fabulous clothing no matter how high end the store is. Earlier eras were so much better.
DVF - always in. the 90s style was so simple it can easily be worn today, modernized with different combinations and accessories. I would absolutely not wear today's high fashion tends.
My favorite fashion period is the 60s even though it wasn't in your video...and the 90s monochromatic clean line look. I think the 60s was the first time modern women could move away from overly restrictive clothing and started to be able to show some freedom.
Justine; excellent content and presentation as always! My favorite is the wrap dress, I have worn several over the years.. “form and function” are both present in this dress... Thank you!
another excellent video! i personally would love the clothes of the 70s because of the fabrics and the way they were produced (sewed in the country of origin, natural materials, designed piece by piece, handmade). i really hate the 90s, - i remember the indifferent, washed-off, disfigured clothes not suiting any body shape. and now in 2018 i hate all the clothes made of polyester.
My first full time position was working in Designer Sportswear for Bloomingdales. It was the late 70s and Ralph Lauren &Calvin Klein along with Perry Ellus were very popular in the NYC area. Receiving a shipment of Missoni was a huge deal, and those pieces flew out the door. Albert Nipon was a popular dress designer. I attended all the new season trunk shows on 7th Ave, and I learned so much about the softline industry. I will say that the movie The Devil wears Prada was very in sync with that era, and it was easy to burn out. The womens movement was in full swing and there were so many buyers putting unreasonable demands upon everyone that I chose to leave the industry. But I love keeping up via your channnel, Justine! you are so knowledgeable and entertaining that its refreshing to watch. ☺
Ahhh the 90's...loved both minimal and grunge styles. Also, adored the white DVF look you found. The hair the whole thing is sooo good! Well done Justine!
I love how you are able to uncover fashion from its "shallowness" and show us that behind the aesthetic value there's so much more. It's an art but I feel that amongst all the easy access (both to pictures on the web and to clothes as in fast fashion) this artistic nature gets lost to "owing and display the trend of the season". It's always a pleasure, hugs!
Someone wise said Fashion is not an island, it's a reaction. There were different times, different people. The fashion today is not my favourite era. I adore Madame Gres, Vionnet and Cristobal Balenciaga Loved the 90s for their minimalism. Fashion history might be a great ideea for some videos. Thank you
Lorelei I agree about the history of fashion. I’d like to see that too. I have one great book on the topic but Justine would do a better job. She did one video on body types and that overlapped with this topic. At least I am fairly sure she did that video.
Agree, after the 70's and 80's patterns and colourful prints seemed so disgusting and old fashioned. Minimalism and 'brown is the new black' was a reaction to that. High heels and skinny jeans were dated. All comes around again but the 70's style is improved by modern fabrics. Polyester was horrible!
I believe I love the fashion you showed for 1978. The fashion seemed more focused on being well dressed than having a “gasp” factor that I feel is apparent and rampant in 2018.
I’m 55 and have just recently decided to wear what has made me feel good and happy over the many years of fashion styles I shop vintage including Chanel houndstooth ,it’s been fun staying away from fast fashion .
Halston also understood that not all women could afford high fashion, but most wanted to, and he was the first high fashion designer to make a line for everyone. They sold it at JC Penney because he said that was the store his mother shopped at when he was growing up in Iowa.
I would gladly wear anything from Yves St Laurent till the day I die; his designs continue to be never "out" just off-&-on more "in" than other times. The same with Calvin Klein. I would also wear most of DVF.
I feel like what was considered high fashion in the 90s would be „normal“ wear today... So it took us 20 years to accept the minimal runway style in our daily wardrobe?! Fascinating! Thankyou Justine for another very interesting and educational video!! Have a nice day everybody 😊☀️
70s decade for me. Just remember the gypsy look which was all the rage and cheesecloth tops. Also espadrilles which gave come around again! YSL suits. Styles influenced by Great Gatsby film (Redford version)
Love this! I love the 90s the most, I am big fan of grunge style and of the minimal look, calvin klein was revolutionary 😍 dior has had my favourite collections for several years now, and i like the f18 one too - i think some of their runway looks are a little crowded, but the pieces themselves are beautiful :) would be interesting to see a video about the designers who have most influenced you!
I was a teen in the 90’s and wore the minimalist Calvin Klein tank tops that were cut straight across with spaghetti straps, I would pair that with baggy men’s army pants from the thrift store, and chunky black Mary Janes 😁 fun times! I love your channel Justine, you are so detailed and eloquent, and your voice is lovely! Keep doing what you’re doing!
I adore your videos! Very informative and you're a delight to watch. Always smiling and a gentle tone. Would you be interested in doing a series about tourists and their unique fashion choices? I live in a huge tourist town and the looks I see are very distinct and original. It might be fun to see your take on it.
Merci, Justine! This is a fun video. I'd wear YSL, the DVF wrap, the red Dior suit (2018), Chanel (1998 & 2018). The 90s are still a big influence, for sure.
Interesting video!! There are certain pieces from all decades shown that I would wear (rather than an entire ensemble), but what I noticed is that - for me personally - I would probably wear 90% of all the shoes in the pictures, and easily be able to put together outfits from my current wardrobe. 👢👠👡 I agree that the 90s probably felt rather confusing, but there was a huge arc that happened in the one decade. If we set aside the big fashion houses for a moment and reflect on mainstream media/influences from the music industry for example (which has very close ties with fashion). We had Madonna releasing her Immaculate Collection album in 1990 and debuting Jean Paul Gaultier's 'cone bra' corset, Nirvana releasing their Nevermind album almost a year later in 1991; all the way to 1998 which is the year that Justine also focused on for this video... the era of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Will Smith wearing so much of everything in "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It", Spice Girls in their huge platform shoes and everyone who had seen Celine Dion in that pale confection of a formal gown, busting out "My Heart Will Go On". From the iconic to the completely forgettable; the 90s was a lot of everything it seems. 😂💿
Hi Justine!! Would you make a video describing the different types of fabrics that are perfect for use in fall/winter and spring/summer? Or a video on what dresses to wear during summer or winter for special occasions. I love your feedback, thank you for sharing your info and making videos!!!
Very fresh video Justine! 60s has to be my favorite fashion era :-) I recently started watching 'MAD MEN' on netflix and I'm observing each outfit carefully (thanks to you!). 60s were so extra but I love it! Happy Sunday, hope you had a lovely weekend
very interesting video, thank you! i really enjoy 70s fashion because of how extravagant it was compared to modern casual clothes which everyone wears. it all was so bright and playful back than, at least that's how i see it
My favorite fashion decade is the ‘70s. And Yves Saint Laurent was my favorite designer. He brought back the combination of red plus pink. His Russian collection was such a dream!
I love the 90's minimalism but I would say that my favorite time would be today. Not because of the new designs but because of the liberty and playfullness that we can achieve today with clothes. There are much more minimalist designers today than before. And today, compared to the 90's and 70's, it doesn't matter what you wear - You can mix and match period and classic peaces with more modern ones and look fashionable. We (women) no longer have to abide by rules. No matter the time you live, the important thing is 'you do you'. Thank you Justine for the wonderful video!
Love the idea of this video of comparing different decades of fashion,it gives an interesting insight on the current fashion "situation" and the perspective with comparing it with past decades... I love the 1998 Prada, not shocking but definitely classy and appealing to me.
Fun video, Justine! The wrap dress was genius and now a classic I wear often. In the seventies, the 'peasant' skirt was everywhere and that too is a classic from a long time ago and I have a few that I love to wear every summer. The boxy blazer from the seventies, with or without the big shoulders was big this past two seasons, but I am petite, so not a fan. Helmet Lang minimalism from the nineties was a 'palate cleanser' and I think inspired the minimalism we see today-especially love this style now that I am in my fifties and feel I've found my 'groove.' ~Helena
Very nice Video! Made me very excited to see, what people will be wearing in 20years! I think the suit is totally on trend again, right? Very interesting what the runway of the 90s was known for! As you said- not really what I would think of...
90s Calvin Klein is absolutely still wearable today and an aesthetic I really appreciate. As you say, the minimal side of the 90s look still resonates today. The 70s wrap dress is also still wearable as it's so flattering to so many silhouettes.
Justine, I'm enjoying your expertise on fashion. I also appreciate it when you show what you're wearing yourself and why. Thanks especially for your 5-minute face you did a few weeks ago. To my surprise, I discovered I can do a 10 minute face instead of going without makeup when rushed. Looks so much better! Thanks again from Texas!
Wonderful video Justine!👏👏 Have lived through all these eras of fashion. My favorite clothes are the elegant and classy which can adapt to any occasion☺.
Hi Justine, loved your idea of comparing the decades! It was interesting to see what you would choose to show for it🌞. I agree with you that it's a matter of perception. When people are exposed to something a lot, most of the time they like it and then people look back to it and think it's hideous, as you mentioned with the wedding dresses
Interesting. I simply do not understand the "fashion" of today. Who would pay high prices to wear clothes that make you look homeless? You could simply go to a thrift store, buy whatever cheap, mismatched clothing and throw that on to achieve the same look. I don't get it. UGH!!!! Good video, Justine, as usual.
I think people thought the same about the other decades? I remember watching runaway shows in the 90's and thinking that all that was too much to wear daily and now its completely normal and even boring?
Fabulous video! I love the comparisons from the different decades! To answer your question, I was 20 in 1992, and I feel the Chanel style from the 90's is lovely, and I would gladly wear those clothes today. Also, I am guilty of wearing DVF wrap dresses. I just love them!!
I really loved the minimalism of Calvin Klein and the 90s. Would wear it any time!
Alexandra Repina I would have thought that DKNY was the look of the 90s. Maybe I am getting late 80s/early 90s mixed up.
Great video Justine, as always!
tracy woodruff I do afree with your opinion. it’s not as great as it used to be.
I was born in '59 and completely agree with your comment.
I was born in '55, so remember many decades also (always interested in fashion!). The runways have definitely always been more over the top, even if some influences come down to the streets. I am totally hooked on Justine's videos! Love everyone of them! Thank you for all of your knowledge and effort - and then sharing them!
1978 dior and ysl. I would wear in a heartbeat. More so than what you showed for 2018.
Same.
same for me, definitely
Same. I saw the 2018 ones and I was like, what on earth is that? Totally not my thing. I like simplicity and comfort
It's funny how the catwalk looks from the 90s are now quite normal for everyday wear in 2018! Great video Justine.
I love the masculine looks from the seventies!! I'd totally wear those and the 90s minimalist ones.
I would absolutely wear those Calvin Klein clothes today. To me, the minimal look is the most timeless. I just love your videos 👍
Same. I was 19 in '78 and STILL love the simplicity in 2018.
Am I the only one who thinks 2018's trends are hideous ? I loved the 1998's trends and I think it's still wearable.
I've seen Nice styles...I have a feeling Justine shows the worst. And I don't know...vetements kind of goes for tacky to shake up the industry. 1998 fashion example are actually the types of clothes you might see more on the streets today.
i thought the same too. 1998 ones look soooo wearable
No one wears 2018 designer stuff anyway.. Gucci kinda is thats why its so popular
The only wearable decade since the end of the 1960s...
I find it amazing how a trend comes... goes... and comes back!
I would definitely wear that dress that was innovation in 70s. With the flowy fabric.
The '78 photos were interesting. All the ladies at the Chanel show reminded me of the British PM Margaret Thatcher's style...not a personal favourite but I loved what YSL was doing at this time and DF also, for making clothing so feminine and celebrating the female form. ..always a good move!
It would be interesting to see a comparison like this of street fashion of those decades.

I would love to see more videos on fashion history
The wrap dress and tailored trousers/suits are definitely timeless pieces. My favourite decade is 98 because of the neutral colours and the minimalism. Helmut Lang was a genius.
mzChocoSensualHedbob timeless 😂🤣😂
elsa Grace lol what's funny?
mzChocoSensualHedbob suits are easily dated and go out of style.
What has been done before is definitely influencing what is happening today.
honestly I'm not even a fashion enthusiast but here I am. love you justine!
Now when I think about it, it was early 00's when low waist jeans and crop top were everywhere.
Justine, I would love a 2018,1918 and 1818 comparison as well as your take on it. Thank you for another fantastic video. :)
I though about it.. but it is virtually impossible to find good photos online. I would need to go through musueum archives.
I understand. I find fashion history to be fascinating and I love it when designers incorporate (very) old trends in their creation.

Justine, I would love to see a series with you when you take on the fashion from different decades of the twentieth century. Talking everyday wear, couture and perhaps some "fun facts" about something that was special that decade.
The wrap dress I think is something that people might still wear today, though probably with different details and styling.
Another great video!
grimeldasnodpocket. The DVF dress is still a staple in today's clothing world, copied by every company out there. That dress is timeless.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw those wrap dresses. ^_^ I just adore the late seventies.
I can't help but smile when you smile in the intro :)
Me too! I find her smiles so contagious. Makes my day every time
I'm a 90 girl. No surprises there. Awesome video, more of this, please!
Jeannette Mann I agree, I like the 2018 the best!
So much fun!
Lots of love, Charoit
the 80's FTW everything neon and sequins , disco for ever lol thank you for the video :)
The wrap dress is timeless and still worn today I think. love them.
Kaleidoscopeallie you certainly have a way with words! You could be a fashion writer, for sure! So refreshingly descriptive.
Would love to see a pic of the shirt
The 90s are definitely my favorite, but then again, I was in my teens back then 😋
DVF - always in. the 90s style was so simple it can easily be worn today, modernized with different combinations and accessories. I would absolutely not wear today's high fashion tends.
Maybe today's looks with be "normal" in 10 or 20 years 😉
Yes, it is possible... but judging with today's eyes, I hope not :)
Thank you!
Wrap dresses are my favorite. Monochromatic and minimal are favorites as well.
another excellent video! i personally would love the clothes of the 70s because of the fabrics and the way they were produced (sewed in the country of origin, natural materials, designed piece by piece, handmade). i really hate the 90s, - i remember the indifferent, washed-off, disfigured clothes not suiting any body shape. and now in 2018 i hate all the clothes made of polyester.
My favourite fashion decade is the 50s. I love my vintage clothes and fashion 😍 this video was 👍🏻
This was great! However, my favorite decade has to be the late 60's. Just loved the clothes from that time!
What a truly ingenious idea to compare those different fashion periods, Justine!
Thank you very much!
This is an awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to produce it. Now I'm going to watch it again. 😘❤️
I love any of these videos that delves into fashion history!
Thank you for the 💜
1978 is my favorite by far. Great video, thank you Justine.
Thank you
Some of Vionnet (house) is still beautiful, but I do know what you mean with dresses from another era, simply feminine and elegant 🌞
Best fashion decade was definitely the 80's - the most avant-garde, modernist, out-of-the-box! Montana, Mugler, Ferrè, Gaultier, Alaia!
That was brought by the anoretic and androgynous aesthetics - "heroin chic" - of the 90's...
I’m 55 and have just recently decided to wear what has made me feel good and happy over the many years of fashion styles I shop vintage including Chanel houndstooth ,it’s been fun staying away from fast fashion .
When I think 70s fashion, Halston is the designer that comes to mind. But a DVF wrap dress probably is wearable in all decades
Halston also understood that not all women could afford high fashion, but most wanted to, and he was the first high fashion designer to make a line for everyone. They sold it at JC Penney because he said that was the store his mother shopped at when he was growing up in Iowa.
Halston is certainly one of my most memorable, too. And CK.
@@maggie2sticks717 : that's so interesting! thanks for sharing that.
I personally adore the fashion of the 40s and 50s.
I would wear the 90's Kelvin Klein and Prada, for its minimalism is still appealing and wearable today. Such a lovely video. Thank you.
I have several 70s dresses and I wear them all. The style and the quality is so much better. Every item is unique and special.
Exactly...!
I'd like to thank you for your videos and all that work that stands behind them! You were one of my inspirational reasons to start sewing.
I really appreciate how detailed and creative your videos are. Brava, Justine!
Thanks!
I think the DVF wrap dress is timeless and I would definitely still wear today!
Merci, Justine! This is a fun video. I'd wear YSL, the DVF wrap, the red Dior suit (2018), Chanel (1998 & 2018). The 90s are still a big influence, for sure.
Favorite decade is 1950s hands down. Fitted tops and full skirts and colorful novelty prints--exactly my cup of tea!
Interesting video!! There are certain pieces from all decades shown that I would wear (rather than an entire ensemble), but what I noticed is that - for me personally - I would probably wear 90% of all the shoes in the pictures, and easily be able to put together outfits from my current wardrobe. 👢👠👡
I agree that the 90s probably felt rather confusing, but there was a huge arc that happened in the one decade. 😂💿
This os such a good summary of the 90's! 🙋♀️
Aww thank you!! I hope work trips bring you back to San Francisco soon. 🙂
Wrap around dresses are my fave. They're always flattering to someone with fluctuating weight and they're timeless.
60s has to be my favorite fashion era :-)
I recently started watching 'MAD MEN' on netflix and I'm observing each outfit carefully (thanks to you!). 60s were so extra but I love it!
Happy Sunday, hope you had a lovely weekend
Vibha B i watch Madman now, and its drive me crazy how much they smoked and drank at those times lol 🙈
Alyona Kopach I can almost smell the smoke each time they take out the cigarette 😂😂😂
mad men is the greatest drama show of our time. im just now getting to season 7 and im a tailor and classic menswear aficinado.
L.a. Paramino Sartorial life Oh that sounds wonderful!!
Alyona Kopach, I know, right?! Most problems were fixed in North America with a stiff drink and United Kingdom with a cup of tea.
Awesome Justine! I can definitely tell now which era my fashion style comes from and it’s right on with what you said! 👍👍👍
very interesting video, thank you! i really enjoy 70s fashion because of how extravagant it was compared to modern casual clothes which everyone wears. it all was so bright and playful back than, at least that's how i see it
My favorite fashion decade is the ‘70s.
Nothing better to start a Sunday morning ... ☕️ 🥐 thanks for another lovely and interesting video!
I love the classic design of Chanel--so elegant whether the clothes are formal or casual!
Helmet Lang minimalism from the nineties was a 'palate cleanser' and I think inspired the minimalism we see today-especially love this style now that I am in my fifties and feel I've found my 'groove.'
~Helena
Very nice Video! Made me very excited to see, what people will be wearing in 20years! I think the suit is totally on trend again, right? Very interesting what the runway of the 90s was known for! As you said- not really what I would think of...
I would love to see more videos like this
I really like to see previous trends where they come from and how they affect future collections
I would be interested in what people actually wore, because I believe there's a difference... and I would really like to see such "normal" fashion!
Fascinating video! In my 60's and love the 98 style, minimalist and very elegant but most important so wearable Thank you so much!
Wonderful video Justine!👏👏 Have lived through all these eras of fashion. My favorite clothes are the elegant and classy which can adapt to any occasion☺.
Love your channel, looking forward to seeing more
i love how well researched your videos are
Hi Justine, loved your idea of comparing the decades! It was interesting to see what you would choose to show for it🌞.
I agree with you that it's a matter of perception. When people are exposed to something a lot, most of the time they like it and then people look back to it and think it's hideous, as you mentioned with the wedding dresses
My vote is split between Dior 1970s and Chanel 1990s. Thanks for a great video, Justine.
I'd add: Oversized homeless.
Well, people don’t usually wear the full outfit shown on the runway during normal life. They’re kinda over the top just for the sake of it
I think people thought the same about the other decades? I remember watching runaway shows in the 90's and thinking that all that was too much to wear daily and now its completely normal and even boring?
Trashy is trendy nowadays thats sad
virylixyus in the house that depends on how you see it. From a Victorian lady perspective, the 50’s are super trashy.
Fabulous video! I love the comparisons from the different decades! To answer your question, I was 20 in 1992, and I feel the Chanel style from the 90's is lovely, and I would gladly wear those clothes today. Also, I am guilty of wearing DVF wrap dresses. I just love them!!
