    As sad as this is on how misinformed the owner was, you gotta admit that in order for a fish to get that big, he put some love and care into her. He could’ve just dumped her in a river or done something else completely horrible in order to get rid of her and he didn’t. He could’ve even kept her for her whole life in that miserable tank as a decoration (lots of people think of fish as decor sadly), but he did the right thing and rehomed her. He held out and waited until the right home came along and could give her as much care as he WANTED to give her. I respect that. I understand why there are a lot of critical comments on here but I think this guy deserves a bit more respect, cuz while he should have done more research, his heart really was in the right place.

      @@YerMate She was a family pet, he was waiting for a proper home to take her, that's hard to find a place for a fish this big and something that would understandably take a few years to do. She wasn't that big for 18 years, a fish getting this size took quite a few years to grow and he did try to find tanks to accommodate her as much as he could. As upsetting as it was to how under educated he was buying her in the first place, my original point is that at he gave a shit and actually saw her as a pet rather than something to throw out or solely display, which a lot of people see fish as nothing but objects. And THAT part deserves some recognition.

      @Fin Zen The selling of animals that the majority of people can't keep is what should be criminal. This problem would be wide spread if more people cared enough even to keep them alive vs flushing or releasing. He cared for 18 years. His options were just limited.

    • @delennamachoo
      @delennamachoo 4 роки тому +4

      @Fin Zen Here's the thing, we don't know what he tried which is why I resist casting any sort of judgment against him. He's certainly not absolved of all guilt, but there would be quite a few more animals in this position if more people were like him and just didn't release them or kill them, especially given how many were sold in the 90s and early 2000s. I can't speak for what goes on now, but I worked in the pet trade during college...a few years before he would have acquired this fish. I was fired for telling a customer that his sick pacu couldn't survive in a 20 gallon tank. The store manager had told him it would be fine and sold him the fish and tank a few years before. I found a college job outside of the pet trade. So, I see a lot of potential for people to have ended up with unexpectedly large fish and no financial means to care for them properly.

    Unless you've been in this situation you should hold your tongue. Many years ago I got a baby Pacu from a reputable (or so I thought) pet store. He was cute and cheap and they swore up and down that the biggest size he'd ever attain would be 12 inches if I was lucky. He started in a 30 gallon, then a 55 then finally a 100. NO ONE wants to take adult Pacu. NO ONE. I tried every avenue possible at the time. People kept telling me to just dump him in a lake somewhere, but I'm a responsible person and I loved him. No it wasn't an ideal situation but it is what it is. This is why I love the OFR so much! I wish you were around all those years ago. It's also why I educate anyone and everyone who will listen about these fish who shouldn't be available to the general public.
