    Great video. Im convinced these will be my first cinema lens. Try to add an affiliate link to these so i use it when i do buy them. Have you tried the tokina vista-P? It's near impossible to find any footage.. They were released last year. Im am getting info narrative work.

      Hi, there is a link to these on my most recent videos. UA-cam makes it a pain to change the descriptions later in bulk. The new Vistas are incorporating the small tweaks that the tweakers have done and resold. There are many “custom cinema lenses” out there that are actually Vistas with some small tweaks.

    Probably the best review I’ve come across on the Tokina Vista primes 👏🏼
    Do you have any thoughts on the Tokina Vistas vs those new Vespid primes from DZO? I’m trying to decide between one Vista prime or a set of the DZO Vespids to shoot my documentary projects. Any thoughts are appreciated

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you!. To be honest, the Vespids aren’t in the same class of glass as the Vista Primes. There has been a very mixed reaction to the Vespids and to be honest, not a lot of love for them out there. The DZO zooms are nice, but the Vespids are just “ok” glass. The Tokina Vistas are seriously good. I have used them many more times since this review and I have to say they always blow me away. They just have a beautiful look to them. I own a set of the Tokina zooms and they are 90% as good as the Vistas. I did a couple of reviews on them as well. When I go out and shoot now, I grab the Sigmas and the Tokinas, almost every time.

      @@ScottBalkum Thanks for the insights. The few reviews I’ve seen on the Vespids were really positive, definitely a very different beast than the Tokinas - from what I heard I thought the Vespids are supposed to be a sweet spot between modern and vintage glass - so obviously not as sharp and free of flaws as Tokinas or Sigmas, but that’s kind of the point right? Wish I could just test all of them. But every single person I’ve seen talk about the Vistas has nothing but the highest praises, besides the weight and stiff focus ring - would only be able to afford one Vista, but I wouldn’t mind shooting an entire doc on a Vista 35mm f1.5

      It is an amazing piece of glass. So very clear with a touch of flaring when asked. Look for a video coming out shortly of the Vista Ones.. I was able to shoot with them recently and they are even more amazing. They have fewer coatings so hey flare like crazy.

    Great review! Just received my RED Komodo. Can’t decide which of the following two lens brands to fully invest in: Tokina Vista Primes or the Cooke Panchro/i Classics. Two very different price points and looks. Any thoughts on the Cooke Panchro/i Classics?

      I know many people that regularly shoot with Vistas on Komodo. Yes, Vistas are very large and weigh more than Komodo. But, they make a beautiful image and that is key.

    Thanks for this Scott. I noticed you have the BT Revolvr, I was wondering if you noticed some very minor give when making subtle focus pulls? By that I mean the knob wiggles a mm or so fore and aft before actually engaging the gear? I've noticed this with lenses with stiffer focus rings like the tokina vista, and was wondering if it was noticeable for you as well? I kind of like it because it gives me some ease in/less vibration before the pull (so it may be a feature), but was just wondering if others noticed it as well? Thanks

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  6 років тому

      I know exactly what you are referring to. Yes, I have experienced it with very stiff focus rings. Moving to the cine ratio drive and small gear motor lessen it a lot. In addition, tightening the connection to the rods and adjustments helps a little as well. It is never 100% gone but it is very minor with all the tweeks. That being said, I have no idea if the same would happen with other mainstream professional FFs. I don't own an OConnor FF to compare it to. What I will say is even when I force a fast move, at no time does the FF feel like it would strip the gear or skip. This tells me that it is likely just very stiff focus rings as not being normal and that something that bends is better than something that breaks. My thoughts.

      It is a beautiful lens. Extremely wide. Keep in mind it is a S35 coverage... But the even better news.... There is going to be a full set... There is a 11-20 and a 50-135.....and another coming soon. Tokina has really stepped up to the plate with their new cinema glass. Be sure to check out my Vista Ones video I just released a few weeks ago as well as another video coming soon..... Thank you for the comment on the montage. You might see more of that footage in other places soon...

      @@ScottBalkum do they offer the same optics and coatings from the Vista to ATX series?

    • @ScottBalkum

      They have similar coatings but no where near the same look. They will match in color temp. but the Vistas have a more exotic glass type. The zooms will have more contrast.

    How do these compete with the canon and sigma cine primes?

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  5 років тому +1

      They are much sharper than the Canon Cine lenses. They are equally as sharp as the Sigmas. The Sigmas and the Tokinas have different feels. The Tokinas look so great on skin and nature, etc. The Sigmas look very clinical. They are really nice, but you have to add some character to them. The Tokinas have a flavor all their own. That being said, I think both the Tokina and the Sigma lenses are great. You should try them both.

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  5 років тому +1

      3 Shukra listen to the beginning of my review. Every lens has a different feel. Every lens has a different character. There isn't a winner unless that lens meets the character of your story. You can do sharpness tests all day long and if it doesn't match your film, it is the worst lens possible. Choose the lens based on your story.

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  3 місяці тому

      Surely you understand that this was by design and that there are $75,000 lenses that exhibit the identical behavior shot on 100’s of movies right? And, this is desirable by some DPs in various styles of movies.

    • @tecno8335
      @tecno8335 2 місяці тому

      Sigma Prime lenses contain light substantially better than Tokina prime lenses. Tokina handles light so bad that the bloom from direct light distorts faces with a milky mess. Now some may like that look but it's really distracting to say the least and other cine lenses don't do that it's only Tokina primes. It's super annoying 😅 but hey maybe they want that as there signature
