Its been almost a year since i first saw it, and i still dont know how to move on. This film is like a croissant, looks simple yet so many layers in it.
Such a beautiful and ground breaking film, visually so appealing and definitely stays with you for a long time after experiencing it! I had the chance to meet Celine Sciamma in person in Paris, and I couldn't resist walking up to her to thank her for giving us such great female centric films. I loved Petite Maman and Water Lilies too.
Yesss!! This movie is brilliant, the whole subject-object subversion is really interesting, visually this movie is a dream. The sea, the fire, the paintings- it's a treasured favourite of mine! I saw it when it was released in a small movie theater here in Gothenburg, couldn't help but see it again.
Enjoyed this deep-dive into the themes and subtext in Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Great content. I watched this movie a couple of months ago, and relished every moment of it. Thanks though, for deconstructing the scenes where Heloise appears like a phantom in her wedding dress. It appeared to me that the paranormal-like texture of these scenes stood in stark contrast to the subtlety with which Sciamma treated the rest of the material. It's nice to know that these scenes allude to something more than meets the eye. Who doesn't love a Greek tragedy?
I thought I knew quite a bit about this film but your insight and observations are wonderful. Of course the blue wrap, the song translation and more. Thank you
Even The bestThank you so much. I completely missed the blue coat or Orpheus/Marianne and white dress of Heloise/Eurydice. It took awhile to pick up Marianne seeing Heloise In her white wedding. I will listen to this a second time. And that being said I think POAWOF is without a doubt one of the best movies ever made. Acting, cinema, screenplay. All time wonderful move So
She is a woman, normally a man would retrieve, as a woman would sit and watch. She showed herself capable, ready to do what was necessary without help from any man, thus breaking a feminine myth of women not able to take care of what was needed in that moment. She showed her fierceness and independence, thus broke with societal convention and expectations of how a woman should behave.
this movie is the one and only i will always remember with a nostalgic yet romantic feeling. my favorite for sure

This was awesome! Do you plan to do more 'themes/subtext' videos on films? That would be pretty cool if you did....but if not, that's cool too :D
Yes, I think so. I am currently working on other video essays - a lot of work but a lot more interesting too!
How does her jumping in the sea break from any convention?
