- Sometimes, there are mountains that are too tall for even the greatest to climb. And that's what happened to Canelo Alvarez as Dmitry Bivol's size, skill, activity and tight defense turned back the Mexican superstar's attempt to collect more world titles with a brilliant performance that ended with a unanimous decision victory at T-Mobile Arena.
Bivol retained his WBA (Super) light heavyweight championship as he refused to bow down to Canelo's pressure and was technically sound enough to prevent making mistakes for Canelo to capitalize upon. Instead of being in awe of Canelo, Bivol (20-0) used a stiff jab and kept busy whenever Canelo became aggressive. Canelo's power was evident but Bivol made sure very few punches landed clean as Canelo bounced power shots off his arms and gloves throughout.
Early on, Canelo (57-2-2) attempted to walk down Bivol but the Russian sniffed out the strategy and would shoot the jab and carry a right hand behind it to keep Canelo from settling in with his power. As the rounds wore on, Canelo was unable to break down his opponent and found himself in a real fight by the middle rounds. Whenever he did land a big power shot, Bivol would tighten his defense up and ensure he wouldn't absorb another shot.
Bivol fought like he had the judges against him and keep throwing into the championship rounds. He caught Canelo flush several times but never seemed to have the 31-year-old in any real trouble. However, the points were piling up and Canelo couldn't get the knockout or definitive rounds he needed.
With scores of 115-113 across the board, Bivol pulled off the big upset as a 5 1/2 to 1 underdog. Not only that, he dashed the possibility of Canelo-GGG in September as Canelo stated he wanted an immediate rematch. - Спорт

you can see how important weight classes are when a guy like Canelo is untouchable until he moves up 6 pounds and is basically non-competitive.
How Canelo is as light as he is, is beyond me, he looks like he should be a lot heavier given his build etc. This gives him an advantage at lower weights as he seems bigger and stronger than his opponents. Stepping up a weight definitely proved an issue as his normal strength advantages were negated. Bivol also fought an amazing fight, great mix of offense and defense and great movement, he was certainly the superior boxer of the two.

Bivols counter attack was the key. Everytime Canelo attacked bivol covered up then immediately went on counter attack. Canelo never moved his head straight after his attack or covered up allowing Bivol to win the fight easily. Canelo relied on power pushing forward this normally wins 99 % of the time but not with a master boxer like Bivol. Well done both fighters.

Canelo has progressively gotten better throughout his career. There are better boxers in the list of ‘Pound for Pound’ elites but Canelo has captured several World Titles in different weight classes, faced several dangerous top rated opponents. He may have been somewhat overrated earlier in his career but he has (in my humble opinion) risen to the level of elite world class competitor
You guys just want to see him lose. Want him to fight people 6 inches to a foot taller and much heavier to prove he's the best lol. He fought a true light heavyweight.

After several rewatches I don't think Bivol won this as conclusively as the judges thought he did. But that he won is unsurprising. Canelo has no business at light-heavy, especially against a talented light-heavy like Bivol. That said, pound-for-pound, Canelo is the better fighter. (I might rethink that if Bivol beats Beterbiev. But he won't :)

Bivol is the better fighter, stronger. But, at the same time Canelo was having small successes when he threw straight punches instead of always looping his right hand. More jabs and straight combinations to set up the right or left hooks. Canelo was a very one dimensional fighter used to hurting people with the right looping cross or hook.

Veo a Bivol y no lo noto mas grande y pesado que Munguia, aun asi los golpes de poder del Canelo no le hicieron nada, recuerdo verla en vivo y pensar que el Canelo se veia cansado y desganado, que tal vez no se preparo como siempre. En que hace unos dias le gano a Munguia vi al Canelo otra vez bien, rapido y con golpes que lastimaron a Munguia. A diferencia de Munguia Bivol si se mueve muy bien y defiende igual muy bien, y su contragolpe igual muy bueno, no habia oido de Bivol hasta este combate, pensaba que iba a ser malo pero todo lo contrario es un boxeador con excelente tecnica
