Just to correct something, you said:"the sound should not be in phase"
But the sound should be "in phase" but should not be "out of phase" on the correlation meter +1 is mono, between 0 and +1 is "in phase"(this is what your are looking for) and between 0 and -1 is "out of phase".
Out of phase sound is not a problem on a stereo audio systems, it will be a problem on mono audio systems and you will lost parts of signal or even not hear a sound if it is 100% out of phase (-1 on the correlation meter).
A good way to add stereo while never being out of phase is by duplicating a stereo track, then using a sample delay plugin like the "latency delay" from voxengo, on one of the two tracks and playing with the knobs!
    Interesting video tho :)

Yeah like Symbiose says, basically sounds in phase, sum, oposite phase cancels. Two exactly identicall waveforms at same phase, will end up in a sum of the amplitude, while two waveforms at oposite phases will cancell each other and result in absolute silence.
You want sounds in phase or they will sound dull and masked, the correlation metter is fine if it still posisitve, and even in certain sounds a bit of quick or small steps in the negative area is Ok, because many special FX fuck a lot with delays, phase and detuning, all affecting phase.

"Gnarly" is more of a way to describe a feeling you get from a sound, rather than a way of describing the sound itself. Usually these are deeply frequency and/or pitch-modulated sounds in such a way that they react with the body, e.g: getting goosebumps, hairs in your neck standing up, that tingeling feeling in your head (you know what I mean. right?) and that feeling your stomach is turning inside-out.
    Hope this answered your question.
Much love from the Netherlands, keep rockin'.

Just for info , when the correlation meter is below 0 we say that the signal is "out of phase" , that means left and right signal will l each other in mono , it's only usefull if you are concerned by mono compatibility .

Just a short info: being in phase is above 0 or even at +1.
Being out of phase (which is not good for mono) means being between -1 and 0.

I suppose you already know this but if you want to use a good stereo width tool, the plugin Wider is supposed to be a really good one that doesn't give much phasing while spreading the sound. polyversemusic.com/products/wider/
Would be interesting to see how the Stereo Tool you used in this tutorial would show on the phase-metering when u apply above plugin.
