Got my record deal with Island Records at age 22. Once I was at the top of my dreams I was my most miserable. I was an alcoholic, heavy smoker riddled with panic attacks. The moment I walked away from it all I discovered that the dream ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. Glad I lost it all to be honest. I won’t spend the rest of my life chasing a dream. But growing in a much healthier way based firmly in reality.
'making it' isnt always the goal. popularity, validation, its all crap. what its all really about is having fun and creating, having something to show for your time on the planet. not money, not numbers. THAT is what's wrong with music.
Love this response. This is exactly how I feel. I'm 50 yo with a daughter and a professional IT career but I LOVE making music. I want to make as many tracks and I can before I die! Why? Cos it's so much fun and so satisfying :)
I create music because it relaxes me. If it happens it will happen. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.
Such a healthy take
0.01%... Bah humbug. The hobbyists of the world are living their best lives.
Having even a hundred people enjoy your creations is a joy and a miracle... 🎉🎉🎉
As a musician /producer with social anxiety and ADHD, I prefer to be invisible.
period!
do music to explore and create, not for money, this is what I do, and it feels great
Came here to say this. Why turn music into something akin to the rat race or social media influenza’ers?
Depends what your goal is, as justin mentions right in the beginning! If you want to get to a high level, it IS a rat race 💯
@@gruvofficial I’m 52 , not enough ego to push me now
If you have no desire to make a living in music, that's great. If you want to do this full-time, you have to move a bit differently. There's nothing wrong with either path. It's all about what you want.
I don't want to be in the 0.1%. I do want to make some money through music so that I can spend more of my time making music and less time working.
@@waynebo248 I hear ya, guess my comment was a bit short sighted. I make money dj’ing but that seems like a walk in the park compared to making money producing. I don’t feel the pressure of pleasing people with my music which is a relief.
i am super thankful that i only survived from making music since 30 years..... it's not easy but i love it, so i am one of this 0.01% crazy
Yeah, it’s true that only a tiny fraction of producers are hitting that 0.01% mark, but there’s a whole world of producers who are still killing it, just in different ways. They might not have the fame, but they’re out here working on indie projects, TV ads, and more. You don’t have to be in that top percent to make a solid living or do what you love in music.
what a relief it is to find this video. i think watching yet another video will set me well on my way to the 0.01%
Incredible video as always. Fully to the point, delivered with immaculate focus! I admire you guys a lot!!
and... with banal, cliche orchestral music 🙂
Great video.
I think truly knowing your goal is important. A lot of people might think they want to be a main stage festival act, because that's what they're told their goal should be, but for the majority it's a miserable reality. Most artists don't realise this until they actually get there.
Also, be careful on your definition of branding. A lot of young producers think they need to be posting on socials constantly and trying to go viral. That might work for more commercial pop/edm acts, but it will turn a lot of people off in certain parts of the industry.
I'm a talent programmer for a reputable club in ibiza and will actively avoid booking artist who are too social media focussed as it gives the wrong message. Too much/fake social media is the number 1 reason I'll refuse to book someone (other than the quality of their music/performance) and I know a lot of the labels that I work with recurrently feel the same.
I'm not saying you should avoid it, just don't do it for the sake of it, and don't be fake. The music should be the number 1 focus and do most of the talking for you.
This is not the same for all venues, but you need to assess what sort of venues and labels you want to be involved with.
Excellent advice!
Another BANGER!! Love you Cosmic Academy 🥰
This video is exactly what I needed to hear.
Seriously the best content on YT.
great video
awesome video, especially loved the split between non negotiable sacrifices that come before even music versus everything else!
A few other videos I watched gave some really good advice for improving your music production. If you make one track every single day, you can overcome any kind of mental block you had on yourself. The track doesn't have to be good, but eventually, you'll make something that you'll listen to and vibe with. It's about establishing that consistency in the DAW. Also, save up your money and invest in better equipment (Gear, VSTs, Presets, Sample Packs, Plugins, ect.). You don't have to dig a hole with your hands if you can get a shovel.
Brilliant video - many people need to hear this - especially looking after our health and relationships.
That’s so true. Not just money but a whole bunch of other things as well.
This video is exactly what i needed right now
This is a helpful insight……, as it’s helped me realise that starting this journey is a good idea, cos I don’t mind not hitting that 0.01 %, I’m happy enough to get to level where I’m just able to make a comfortable wage, and not a 6 figure income, just enough to be able to quit my current career……
Been on the dont sleep team for long time, listen dont do that
Cult is a better word
I'm doing amazing work but it costed me great sacrifices. I spent way too much time in the studio. Women were not willing to date with me, which led me to this path. The True Path.
You know what it actually takes above all? Family support, now not making excuses most of the successful people in music have really supportive family's.
I startet 1998 and today am thankful there were no social media and a flood of software. It was much more costly to make good sounding music and because of this not this inflation in music industry. Of course it was not that easy to get heard, but the world was another! Today as you describe the industry it's a very stressful job to become "famous". Keep it as a hobby.
I do it for fun. Have a lot of connections though. A relative of mine knows some A/B list DJ’s and by chance I know a promoter who is connected to a really big electronic music company here in America. Despite all this none of these people know I DJ or produce in my bedroom. I want to start a business and hope I can scale it to 7 figures someday. The music will always be my way of winding down. Maybe there is a 0.01 % I show my music to someone and it resonates and my life will take a different turn but I’m gonna do it for just the love of it and the joy music brings to my life 😊
A lot more people would make it more often If they scrapped the point system, the music industry has become so predatory its hard to stay motivated when no body is willing to pay, then you sell out and sell sample packs for a living, I miss the old days
I'll keep the money,
You can have the fame. Debbie Harry
love this
Fat chance. But I'm finally developing a basic grip on leveling, EQ and reverb to sculpt a basic mix.
Way to go!!
Really would have loved AVICII to comment on this.
I also think about 0.01% of the artists who play at Coachella once sat down and said it was a ”goal” of theirs.
looks and social media is everything. nobody gives a fuck whether you can produce or not. THAT is the simple truth. uniqueness is nothing people care about anymore. people just use sample packs and loops, pay some bucks for mastering maybe and thats it. everything is pre-recorded, everything is show.
Well, if you create generic, uninspiring music that is certainly the case. Uniqueness doesn't mean that the shit you're making sounds good and people would like to hear it.
That’s actually way higher than I thought it was
The most overrated thing in life is trying to be famous. Relax and enjoy music journey its all about share and love !! Keep on with nice videos guys😊
Cool Music in the background. Who is that ? Like all of them?
I just have to work harder and smarter than 9999 other people. Ez
Who wants to be there on that league?
I was once close as a DJ like 20 years ago, and I was terrorised about how disgusting and disappointing the people there it is. I decided to continue my engineering career, and keep just doing it for fun.
Sorry to hear about your experience. But you can't generalize the whole industry solely based on people that you met or worked with. There are good people and bad people in every industry and it is important to surround yourself with like minded individuals.
Echo star has the best AI music on UA-cam right now
I wonder if it would make sense to split these videos from thecosmicademy. The videos that talk about music production and techniques are awesome, but I feel incredibly gloomy when listening to this person. Maybe release them under different tags or even different channels?
Germane's says "Von nichts kommt nichts" remember that
To be part of the 0.01 you’ve got to spend every moment of your life busting your balls off, stressing every single second, ruining your physical and mental health and probably dying before 50.
Personally I’m fine being part of the 99.99 that has loads of free time to spend with my kids and wife and enjoy the relaxing and stress free parts of life.
Great vid though mate.
Good points :)… for the 10 years I was living that life, I looked older than I do now 🥲
@@TheCosmicAcademy Same here brother. I used to work 140 hours a week. Never again. It took me along time to realise that I don’t want to ever be part of the 0.01.
Now I work two days a week tops for enough money to live comfortably.
That’s it. I wouldn’t work the hours I used to for a million quid a year.
Not entirely true. For instance, look at a lot of the Female Djs these days... Not much to do with music or hard work... Look at how many at the top 0.1% of people hardly do any music production, but use ghost producers, to be creative and try to race the clock. Those are just two examples, but there are many. The truth is that in many music success stories, the right friends, a big mouth, and being good at sucking up bring you way further than hard work. And we did not even touch the favorite modern A&R question... "How many followers do you have on social media?" That is the perspective of a 58-year-old music addict who has followed the music industry up close since the beginning of electronic music.
Someone who's born rich and someone who's got rich is still rich!!! Everyone's journey is different you can either complain and be mad about it or get moving .
I’ll go to sleep when I’m dead AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
One more think. If you’re poor. It will affect your creativity. Make money first so you’ll be able to have 8 hours to sleep.
If you say 0.01% people get there and your school have so many successful students. Then it means 1 of 10000 your students. There is a chance 😅 I’ll just keep watching endless tutorials 😂 thanks 🙏
stats are: 1 out of 10,000 get to play EDC... for our students it's about 1 out of 50
@@TheCosmicAcademy i can see how it's different cause when you have a clear path and guidance to follow and people that always got your back you are more likely to succeed.
And now AI will change everything and will bring those chllenges in another level.
He knows how to get in the %0,1. But instead of doing it himself, he will help us get there instead. And he wants you to believe in that.
I did do it myself. The plaques behind me are of record breaking concerts I did for +10 years. Now I have a school to show others. Once you’ve achieved success in life you want to help others. It’s fulfilling. I find more enjoyment in seeing my students play a sold out concert than continue to do them myself. Maybe I just got old :)
