      I'm a recent viewer of his TCG accessory videos and this is the first time I've heard him acknowledge the game in video.
      A long time ago when I was dueling a friend at a local game shop I distinctly remember a MTG player sitting down next to me (it was Magic night, go figure) and I could _feel_ the disdain in his whispers of us playing _Yu-Gi-Oh!_ of all things. My friend either didn't pay attention or didn't notice, and I didn't mention anything of it until after we left but that gave me the impression of "Yu-Gi-Oh! is _bad_ and you should _feel bad_ for liking it" and all that silliness... I don't believe I've been back there since.
      These days I stick to super casual games with a handful of friends either at each other's houses or late night at fast food places.

    It's been about half a year since this video came out, and I was still really interested in the concept but honestly $120 is just absurd. I did some research and discovered that these are essentially re-skinned copies of modern camera bags, which you even mention at the end of your video. Camera bags are meant to hold delicate, bulky equipment with electronic and glass components, so OF COURSE they will hold all of your MTG-related items safely/securely. Furthermore, most are also modular and internally customizable in exactly the same way as these Pirate Lab bags. After some more research I bought a $40 K&F Concepts camera-carrying backpack (the brand is not the important point here, FYI), and I can tell you it holds 13 EDH deckboxes, an extra 60-card deckbox, and my dice-bag securely and comfortably. It even has a space for a binder on the away-facing side (meant for laptops/tablets), and other compartments intended for large and small camera accessories (tripods, papers, cleaning solutions, etc.). After seeing how well such a regular camera bag works for myself, I can say with 100% certainty that the price point of $100+ for either the messenger bag or backpack is COMPLETELY ridiculous IF all you desire is the functionality promised. If you want the "gamer brand recognition" of a Pirate Lab logo, then more power to you; but I suspect that most interested people would rather pay 30%-50% of the price for quite literally the exact same results.

    • @Sdizzle7
      @Sdizzle7 Рік тому

      Every K&F bag I look at is almost $80. Which is still a good price. But I have used a Secret Lab Product, and what I can say is, they hold up durability wise. I have no experiences with K&F product so I cannot say anything there. BUT when I have $1000+ decks, I am going to secret lab based on my experience of durability for an ease of mind. So do whats best for you.

      I've used camera bags too, they are everything you need for an fnm or tournament! mine can hold a playmat, multiple decks, as well as dice and other accessories. The only thing mine can't hold is any card binders I want to bring. But I imagine if you get a bigger one, that would be no problem.

    • @Sdizzle7
      @Sdizzle7 Рік тому +1

      Agreed they are solid. I bought secret lab because most camera bags now days are $80. I have used Secret lab products and trust their durability, and thats important when you have thousands in each deck. No real wrong answer, but go with what you trust most.

      My good sir, this is a review channel with a Magic: The Gathering focus. All are welcome here, although I will say that this bag wouldn't be something I would recommend to a Yu-Gi-Oh player, I would recommend a camera bag mainly because you only ever need one deck. Also I'm glad you enjoy the Professor's videos!

      Bought mine nearly a year ago and it is great and still in perfect condition. Have brought it through airports several times and drag it with me everywhere. It is packed full of decks and quite heavy and no wear or tear on the handles or straps. Zippers are also in great condition. Couldn't ask for a better backpack to hold a bunch of expensive cards.

    First off, I love your videos Prof. They've helped me as a newbie and continue to help me in my rookie era of Magic. I recently bought the Pirate Lab backpack after watching this review. I love this bag with one exception, the velcro. I'm not sure if I got a bag with issues or if they just need more velcro inside the bag but the little dividers don't stick to anything. My mom sews and is installing extra velcro on the long dividers so my small dividers don't just fall out. Other than that, this backpack is awesome! Thanks for all you do Prof., this game has helped change my social life to now include friends. Thank you!

    • @siegelink9549
      @siegelink9549 7 років тому +1

      True, but its still a bit to much I think. Sure its perfect for magic players. And people don't want to throw deck boxes in a backpack for them to bounce around and eventually break. but $99.99 and $119.99 is WAY to much money to spend on a Messenger bag or backpack.

    • @parkercole6389
      @parkercole6389 7 років тому

      Well on average a decent message bag or good quality back pack is $30-50, (if they arnt waterproof) and then the average deck box is cheap unless you got special ones. Throwing them in an average back pack they may get damaged and need replacing (which means spending more money) I completely understand not wanting to pay $100 up front for a bag, but in the long run, you spend a lot less in "repairs" :)

    • @xelic1996
      @xelic1996 7 років тому +1

      parker cole Not if you get towers. They fit just fine in my bag and don't bounce around. The bag costed 20 bucks and is very durable. Not a single tear after almost 10 years of use for magic.

    For anyone who feels like $100 is too much. Think about this. Your avarage cheap, cloth sack will go for anywhere between 10 and 50 $. That is just a piece of fabric (if you're lucky water resistant) Every day carry bags go for 50 to 200+ $
    A specialiced, water resistant, fully customisable, padded and structured bag for $100 is a steal.
    But besides all of that. Whenever I read the comments of someone who feels like $100 is too much to protect your mtg cards, I feel like i am reading the rambling of a nerd who'd rather spend money on extra printed cardboard than on ways to savely and securely transport said cardboard.
    Great review!

Epic level purchase with the utility i was frankly desperate for.

    DeviantArt did a limited run of single-strap camera backpacks like these five or six years ago. I still have mine and it was some of the best money I ever spent. It's probably about half the size of the backpack design shown here, which is a plus for me. (I can't see why anyone would want to carry around that many cards in one, very conspicuous, "please steal me" place) I don't do a whole lot of photography now days, but it is so useful for FNM's and other Magic events.

    Pro I know I'm 7 years late, but I actually use the Extra Large Case to bring enough Flesh and Blood decks with me to armory events and learn 2 plays that I can basically provide a deck to everyone who attends.
    I originally bought it because I was going to go on a long trip and wanted to bring all my decks with me as I was going on a "MTG tour" of visiting every LGS between my home and my destination. 100% worth the cost as that trip was my best experience as a MTG player as I actually partook in a RCQ that I won (I passed the invitation to the guy I lost to since I didn't live in the region), took part is multiple drafts, finally got to play some Legacy at a FNM for the first time in what felt like years, and of course way games of modern and standard. This was Pre Covid though I'm not sure a similar trip is possible anymore.

    I see everyone is complaining about the price tag on these bags. If you are a serious Magic player, or have a serious collection, then you obviously are ok with investing money into the game. Your average competitive deck can range anywhere from $200 - $2000. I'm sure that many of you have single cards that are worth equal to or more than the price of these amazing bags. I see no issue spending a moderate amount of money to protect my expensive and prized collection during transport.

  • @renallsup2268
    @renallsup2268 7 років тому +24

    Us magic folks will pay 100 bucks for a play set of cards that will rotate, but put that price tag on a bag to help protect them pricey cards in transport and it's outrageous. I'm not in the market for a fancy card tote, but I bet there are plenty of players that won't balk at the price if the bag proves durable over time.

Just last week I spent about $150 upgrading my deck boxes. 2 weeks ago I bought 3 of the new commander 2018 precons totaling about $130. And 3 weeks ago I bought an M19 booster box. • @OGwold
    @OGwold 7 років тому

    Yep, this might not be for everyone, but for those that like it, I'm really glad this exists. I got no need for an item like this myself since my way of the MtG is owning 10 ish decks that I continuously tweak in and out of my interest, trying new ideas and taking them apart a month later. I don't believe I have ever owned more than 10 decks at once, and finding a pair that is balanced can be a real pain. Lending a deck to a friend is annoying as well since I know every single card in my decks. There is no surprise, and I could "just as well played against myself". I'm working on waiting longer before I take them apart to actually have a descent amount of decks available at all times, but money...
    If I get up to 7-10 balanced decks, I would begin to consider an item like this, but for now, I'm good with a "UltraPro four compartment plastic card box", with a single Satin tower for my $450 EDH deck. Either way, the inner geek is drooling all over this product. And the best part? it's water proof, so I can drool as much as I want!

    These bags look like re-purposed camera bags. The "mat loop" on the outside is kind of a give-away on the backpack because that's how you would secure a tripod. The last case looks like something you would get from Battle Foam. If you really want a bag that has partitions for your decks head over to Amazon and pick up a cheaper camera bag. It will give you the same water-proof material and the ability to move the velcro partitions around to make it seem like it is meant to fix MTG deck boxes. Also those bags are about $20 and come in many more colours. And if you leave the centre channel open on the camera bag where the camera normally sits you can put your play mat on the inside as long as the bags internal storage is around 14" or more.

    Good lord those prices. I just use a $20 Husky brand tool box and a regular Jansport backpack I got at the thrift store for $5. The toolbox isn't bad actually, and holds a ton of stuff, has a waterproof seal, two locking clasps, and holes in both clasps to put padlocks.
    That PirateLab card case is actually pretty sweet, but that handle REALLY needs to be reinforced.
    Seriously folks, don't discount your local hardware store for card storage. I was using an ammo case from Harbor Freight to carry a couple Ultra Pro Satin Towers the other day, and it had room for extra knickknacks. Those also have holes for a padlock. Another guy at the shop was using a DeWalt case that had several compartments for sorting various screws/bolts/etc, but sleeved cards fit perfectly in them. It's hard plastic, and has locking clasps.
    "Or just a laptop or tablet" got a solid laugh out of me, because a binder full of cards is damn sure more valuable than a laptop.
    I really like your jacket. What are your thoughts on Seersucker jackets and suits? I saw a Seersucker jacket the other day at the thrift store in great shape, but it was too big. I was bummed.

    Hey Prof. I haven't seen you do a review of the XL Dex protection deck box. The one designed to hold a double sleeved commander deck and a double sleeve 60 card deck with room for sideboard and tokens on both. I love it for protecting my legacy deck and my foiled out expensive mono black commander deck. The only down side is its large size and different shape then most deck box's. Could you do a review of those and how they might fit in some of these transport cases?

    I would like to see a review of the Battle Foam PACK system. I know it is designed for warhammer 40k and other miniature games, but with the selection of pluck foam trays you should be able to find something ideal for MTG deck carrying needs.

    For someone who usually has a giant deck box with 4 sleeved decks these bags minus the last one are amazing, if only they weren't so pricey, but you usually need to pay a premium for good products so it balances out i guess

    The messenger bag looks exactly like my 30€ DSLR bag. Except it hasn't the playmat strap. But the size and interior looks almost exactly similar. Maybe you should look out for camera bags if you want a carry bag for deck boxes.

    I'm a fan of the messenger bag, but I do see the case as being useful for at home. Say you have a group over and you need to bring down your decks from upstairs. I'd rather the case over a box. Or for the younger ones that have sleepovers and they need to bring "all the cards!" it's a quick organized grab and go.

    Here's a quick note. You can use the backpack as a carry-on bag for flying, but the messenger bag is a tad too large.
    This would be ideal to take home fragile items, etc.
    Think about purchasing for multiple needs.

    I love the ultra pro satin tower boxes, but they seem to have a tougher time fitting well into the Pirate Lab trays. Are there deck boxes you'd recommend for a 75 double sleeved deck, 100 double sleeved deck, and 100 single sleeved deck that fit best into these trays?

    Could I ask how the interior of these new products compares to PirateLab's previous use of EVA foam? the older card bags have finally hit British shores, and now I find myself wanting more d:
    NB; are the fasteners on the side also meant to tighten the bag so boxes can't move forward/backwards if required?

    Honestly, this messenger bag works great for me, but its the equivalent of buying a full art card rather than using the cheaper normal version.
    Both work fine, Pirate Lab however is just a little better at everything. It is slightly more organized. Its slightly better shaped. It feels slightly more comfortable to pack it up and move it around. I like to use things that add a little bit more comfort to my life, and the best thing is I never unpack this messenger bag when I get home from tournaments or playing at a friends place. I always have everything I need right in my TCG bag.
    If you're buying it, accept that you're going to 'overspend'.

    haha my friend uses 2 back packs 1 with decks and the other with trade binders. as for me I kinda like the backpack. I carry around 5 fat pack boxes, couple loose deck boxes then I Judy fold up my mat. quite a few of my decks aren't in individual deck boxes just in the fast pack box so the limitless adjusting as pretty dope

    Professor, could you review the Pirate Labs Large Card Case? Only one tray and a fully zippered side pocket that holds portfolio, smaller binders, and a play mat (I think.) It seems as though it fixes several of the issues you had with Pirate Labs XL Card Case.
    The case looks like it might be perfect for me, but I pause when buying magic accessories that haven't received high grades from you.
