Spins are definitely overlooked these days… they still should be on the PPL check ride. Also, would the area you are flying in happen to be around the El Capitan Reservoir? It looks kind of familiar.
When I did my PPL back in 93 stall & spin was part of the flight test. I still don't know why Transport Canada removed it from flight training and the flight test few years later. Spins are very important to understand how will you, as a pilot, react to what is happening as the airplane slows down and ailerons are used incorrectly instead of controlling the airplane with the rudder.
I had this discussion with an examiner after one of my student's check ride. He thought it was a shame that the FAA has removed the requirement for spin recovery training during your PPL. The school I work at still do spin training even though it's not required. Both the students and the instructors love it!

Cool. Liked and subscribed.
Nice! I've got'a try that one of these days!
It's awesome!
Make sure you do it with an instructor who knows the plane though.
cockpitts Wouldn't do it any other way, I just need to lose a few lbs so it's easier to get into the utility category. Lost 25 lbs so far :-)
Good job man!
Heavier pilot will bring the CG forward towards the utility category though ;)

I also am happy to have trained in the mid '90's and have benefitted from spin recovery training.
