You have no idea how much I agree with you. I agree with you so much I started learning classical Japanese and translating Heian era folktales into English to make them accessible to more people. There really are so many fascinating stories that the wider world just straight up has no clue about and that's a crying shame I'm not willing to abide.
All the political incidents from 645 to 1192 are very interesting. I particularly like the political incidents of the Heian Period: the Iyo Incident; Kusuko; Jowa; Otenmon; Ako; Shotai; Anna; Kanna; Chotoku and the Shishigatani Conspiracy - they are so intricate and curious in the way the aristocracy projects its power.
People are more interested in the samurai and the sengoku period because warriors, katanas and wars are cool. Statecraft and state building is far more interesting especially when you consider Japan as a nation is a late comer onto the world stage when compared to china (whose civilization started around 1500 BCE) or the mesopotamian civilizations like the Sumerians and Akadians or even the Egyptians (since 5000 BCE).

I'm pretty well versed in both countries' histories, and their relations weren't particularly bad till the 19th century to the modern day. (although, that's not to say they were perfect beforehand, either.)
Have you ever thought about going over some of the major works of the Heian period? You could probably explain Genji or Pillow Book in a way that both highlights their cultural significance and gets some good laughs. Don't worry, I'll deal with that mammoth of the Konjaku Monogatari Shu. Also, great video by the way. I've been looking more into the more pragmatic side of Heian and pre-Heian Japan lately and this video helped a lot. Much appreciated.

Dude there are hundreds of ways to translate things, it depends on if you do a literal, word for word translation that might not make total sense in the language you're translating to, or may lose it's inherit meaning, or there's implied translation where you're translating to get the 'spirit' of the text.
If you want to talk about literally, the kanji 'sen' originate from Chinese word which , literally, means low or despicable or even untouchables / pariah. Linfamy is correct in the first place.
But did Heijo-Kyo have deer that seem surprisingly polite until they decide that you're holding out on them? Those pockets could be filled with shika senbei!
Whoa, they had *imprisonment* as a sentence! From the tv mini-series "Shogun" I had understood that most crimes done by commoners were dealt with execution.
Shogun is set during the Sengoku period when the government was weak and war constantly looming over the horizon. Not much resources for trials or prisons in those days and warriors had the final say on just about everything.
Compared to the Imperial Japanese, the Imperial Chinese had a more liberal society: 1. Marriages between Chinese classes were not legally forbidden but frowned upon and usually not worth it since parents had the right to disinherit their Children for marrying someone they deemed beneath them. 2. Chinese peasants could legally own his own land but few ever did because of poverty and not being able to compete with noble land owners. Only some peasants were legally bound to their landlord's fief and that's only because they owed the landlord a debt they could never pay off. 3. A Chinese citizen could get himself promoted to a higher class via education (only nobles and merchants could afford such educational opportunities but its the thought that counts). 4. All Chinese men were conscripted into the national army regardless of class.

Sure, Cefeng tribute system is indeed in a way a "threat" but this is primarily the case when we looked at Japan from modern point of view where they'd rather hurt their relation with China in return of Legitimizing their ruler, which was the opposite of Joseon dynasty who tried their best to look like & inherit Ming Dynasty, even during the reign of the Manchu Qing dynasty. Sure, Baekje was in fact friends with Yamato but this is largely trivial compared to their relationship with Tang Dynasty. Sure, there are not 'necessary' addition to the video in a way, but being more nuanced is just, better...

Actually, the Japanese were the actual aggressors here. As early as the 5th century, the King of Yamato court already wrote to the Emperor of Southern China (there was a Northern and Southern dynasties period then) that he wished to be known as the General to Subdue the Koreans (Choson). The Emperor dismissed his request. However, it is very obvious then that the kings of Yamato were already invading the Korean peninsula. They even installed a viceroy at Ren Na 任那 area, which eventually fell to Silla (more on that later). During the Tang dynasty, The Gorguyeo people were rising in power and threatening Tang China. Tang has its ally with Silla, a native Korean kingdom and it was constanty invaded by the Gorguyeo (a mix of native Koreans and Tungusic people, but the ruling class is Tungusic origin). Japanese also has their ally which is Bakche, another kingdom originated from Gorguyeo, and they were joining forces with Gorguyeo to invade Silla. It was a complicated power play on the Korean peninsula. In the end, the Tang-Silla ally won over the Gorguyeo-Bakche-Japan allies, and annihilated both the Gorguyeo and Bakche kingdoms. The Japanese also suffer a horrific defeat by the Tang-Silla ally armies. However, the Tang dynasty never got to further their conquest as the western frontier was troubled by the rising Tibetan empire. Silla took the opportunity and slowly took over all the land of the Gorguyeo and Bakche when the Tang armies retreated as more were deployed to the west. They also vanquished the Japanese viceroy at Ren Na much earlier. Shock by the power of the Tang, the Japanese quickly send ambassadors to learn from the Chinese.

Kunnu hi (sp?) are not much different from other ancient societies. The old norse had slaves, so did romans and greeks, so did african tribes, muslim sultanates, even the anglo saxons before the rise of "medieval feudalism" (and after from 17th to 19th centuries, of course), etc. I'm willing to bet native americans had slaves too. Slavery is kind of a thing that all cultures go through at some point or another.

3. A Chinese citizen could get himself promoted to a higher class via education (only nobles and merchants could afford such educational opportunities but its the thought that counts).
4. All Chinese men were conscripted into the national army regardless of class.

Sure, Cefeng tribute system is indeed in a way a "threat" but this is primarily the case when we looked at Japan from modern point of view where they'd rather hurt their relation with China in return of Legitimizing their ruler, which was the opposite of Joseon dynasty who tried their best to look like & inherit Ming Dynasty, even during the reign of the Manchu Qing dynasty.

Actually, the Japanese were the actual aggressors here. As early as the 5th century, the King of Yamato court already wrote to the Emperor of Southern China (there was a Northern and Southern dynasties period then) that he wished to be known as the General to Subdue the Koreans (Choson). The Emperor dismissed his request. However, it is very obvious then that the kings of Yamato were already invading the Korean peninsula. They even installed a viceroy at Ren Na 任那 area, which eventually fell to Silla (more on that later).
During the Tang dynasty, The Gorguyeo people were rising in power and threatening Tang China. Tang has its ally with Silla, a native Korean kingdom and it was constanty invaded by the Gorguyeo (a mix of native Koreans and Tungusic people, but the ruling class is Tungusic origin). Japanese also has their ally which is Bakche, another kingdom originated from Gorguyeo, and they were joining forces with Gorguyeo to invade Silla. It was a complicated power play on the Korean peninsula. In the end, the Tang-Silla ally won over the Gorguyeo-Bakche-Japan allies, and annihilated both the Gorguyeo and Bakche kingdoms. The Japanese also suffer a horrific defeat by the Tang-Silla ally armies. However, the Tang dynasty never got to further their conquest as the western frontier was troubled by the rising Tibetan empire. Silla took the opportunity and slowly took over all the land of the Gorguyeo and Bakche when the Tang armies retreated as more were deployed to the west. They also vanquished the Japanese viceroy at Ren Na much earlier.
Shock by the power of the Tang, the Japanese quickly send ambassadors to learn from the Chinese.
