The 90s were a good era for Elvis Costello

Brutal Youth is my favourite album, I don't think his voice ever sounded better.

He was at the absolute top of his game songwriting wise and what’s more - you could hear that he’d taken account of what was musically happening at the time with guitar music and drew influence from it to keep it relevant but also managed to put his own slant on it. The album works so well as a whole cohesive collection of songs. It really is a phenomenal album, one of my favourite albums full stop and definitely my favourite of his.

Mine too. It blew me away in my 20’s and still does 30 years later.

Pete spent the entirety of Brutal Youth with his snares disengaged, but used two snare drums for Rocking Horse Road.

Not all of it - his snares are definitely engaged but he tuned it really high - he’s a shit the fuck hot drummer - one of the best of his generation and he was playing his absolute top A game on Brutal Youth - he was all over it! All over it! Elvis played quite a bit of Bass on the recordings too. Pete was having a total blast and his gills were very imaginative! He managed to create a lot a space for the rest of the band when he wasn’t blasting out and that’s an art in itself! This album in particular was a huge inspiration to me as a drummer and I loved his high tuned snare, very musical kick work and well, just all of what he did! Simply some of the best drumming committed to record as to be so prominent but yet not overpowering, is absolutely an art. Jimmy Chamberlain of the Smashing Pumpkins was very similar in that regard - similar snare use in that, occasionally, he’d unleash it but it was always musical and then he’d just lock it all back down! Two exceptionally talented drummers!

I love how the guitar sound on this track. Sadly, to me Brutal Youth was the last great Costello album :-(

Plenty of great albums since Brutal Youth in my opinion...

I agree with this sentiment. There was a few good tracks on the follow up but the run he did all the way up to this album was so good and won't be touched by another artist so plenty of material to enjoy no matter if you like the latter or not

He still keep making amazing albums but people don't listen well because they believe EC was the greatest in his early time.
