Paul lays down the law on Rain, Paperback Writer as well but man was he trying to prove something on Rain? Maybe he felt as if the early Beatles bass playing was very passive and he decided to do a more explosive, melodic approach to his playing.
They actually set up the bass with a loudspeaker so it would sound more powerful compared to their previous tracks, I think they were complaining to the engineers that Paul’s bass was usually too quiet
@@deardre He did indeed! He appears playing the Hofner in the Rain and Paperback Writer promo shoots but Paul retired the hofner for a period after Help! and he strictly used the Ric to record all bass parts from Rubber Soul-Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour and even beyond. After that he starts mixing it up with a Fender Jazz bass and a little Ric bass on the White Album, Maybe even the Fender VI although I'm not sure if Paul ever used it, It was acquired sometime around then. From there onward with Let It Be and Abbey Road he starts using the Hofner again but still uses the Ric and jazz too I'm fairly certain. As you can hear on Abbey Road with the Medley and what not.

Yes, very melodious

@@seanwade8188 Let's not forget about that Rickenbacker! Paul started using a new bass after the Help! record with Rubber Soul onward.
@@overjoyous He played the Rickenbacker on these?
