As a Navy veteran, it does get to me when I see these great ships heading for the scrap yard. Each one bears millions of memories from thousands of sailors who served aboard them. I was a tin can sailor, and my last command, USS Turner Joy, DD-951, is a museum ship in Bremerton, Washington, and I had the pleasure of visiting her in 2003. Serving aboard a military vessel at sea creates a unique bond that is difficult to explain, but old sailors understand it without words.
its hard to see these war horses ne scrapped. it broke my heart to see the ranger scrapped. this company gets these ships for pennies, which i think is wrong. they should be given a chance to serve as museums, where the public can understand , just what these shops really did. the government is spending millions of dollars on new shps , where it would have been cheaper to re frib ushi the old carrier. all congress does is waste money. i served with pride on the ranger. and have many fond memories.
I retired in 2009, Joined her in 1989 and served in 2MMR and 4MMR and stayed onboard till a little after Decommissioning. She was my favorite ship and always will be!!!!!
Every Sailor who ever served aboard an aircraft carrier knows how different it is from the rest of the Navy. It takes intense training and hard work to make these ships do their best in any situation. I served aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, then later, aboard the USS Independence. I also was assigned TAD to several other carriers including the Sara. I spent three weeks on her in 1978, in the Main Engineering Div. We will never forget every ship we served on. That's a Sailor for you.
I grew up in Jax, and she was home ported at Mayport in the 80's. When my dad was OOD during the summer, he would bring me to see her and Forrestal when they were in port. It was awesome to see them both in port at the same time.
I’ll miss you Sara😞 sad to see you go as the the 8th day god created the best sailors on board the Saratoga she will live on in our hearts. My van driver served on this ship.

In part I grew up on this ship. I was 19-20 years old. I was aboard her with RVAH-14, I was a plane captain. We flew A5 Vigilantes. What an exciting experience it was. All of us who served aboard her will never forget her. RIP Sarah
MY Mike was on the Sara in '69 and '70. I am so happy to know there are so many Sailors of the Sara showing so much tribute to her. I had the privilege to be on a dependents cruise. That was so much Fun !!!
I served on the Sara as the Captains and for a while admirals Marine guard during its bicentennial med cruise 1976-77 Sorry she didnt become a museum as the largest conventional aircraft carrier.
I made a med cruise on the Sara in 1967. I was in VA-216, part of her airwing. We arrived in the Med just in time for the 1967 Israeli Arab 7 day war. When the USS Liberty was fired upon we took many of her casualties aboard for treatment n the carrier's medical facility. It was an interesting cruise and I saw many places that I otherwise would have never seen had I not been in the Navy, RIP Old Girl.
Very emotional for me. My home 1975-1979. Just found out this morning that Texas was its final resting place. (I live in Texas) I would have loved to have gone down to the coast to pay my respects. Then to add to the emotions, in May I lost my best friend from my Saratoga days. (Greg Waldecker) And his favorite song? The new song from Kansas. Dust in the wind. Thank you very much for making and posting this.
Coming out of leave, I flew from Ft. Lauderdale to San Francisco, MACed to Nome, Alaska to Yokosuka, Japan to Clarke AB in the Philippines, took a bus to Olongapo, caught the USS Racine out of Subic for a lift to Yankee Station and transferred by an eggbeater to Sara to join up with VAW-123 in Nov '72. I served the rest of that cruise, the next Med cruise and on the following cruise in the Med, I boarded a C-2 on the number 2 cat and headed eventually to Norfolk in Apr '76 to end my enlistment. I joined her at sea and left her at sea and will always have a place for her in my heart.

1968 to 1971. I was an Interior Communications Electrician and ran the 5MC shop for 2 years. I liked the ship and the work, wasn't too fond of the lifers and how they treated me. It was a great, great ship, many of the crew were very great people and worked hard. I was fond of Captain Warren Harold O'Neil though I never spoke to him, my special duty was on the bridge for the last two years.

I've been on the Saratoga. She was stationed in Athens and the Navy pilots invited some USAF pilots to dinner onboard. I thought it was the biggest ship I'd ever seen!

Great video, I was real lucky to go on board the Saratoga when I was a little kid, the ship was docked in Palma back in 1975 I think, one of the most amazing days of my life, our escort took us nearly everywhere on the ship, even had a meal on board , to this day I have kept the USS Saratoga belt and buckle that that my escort gave me , I think his name was Steve.
The Saratoga harkens back to a time when we were in our prime... We had the USS America, Kitty Hawk, Ranger, Constellation, Kennedy, etc. etc. But they were showing their age and had problems... power plant/ propulsion problems, fires, steering challenges, electrical, etc. It was their time to go and make room for more capable and newer, albeit more pricey, carriers. It was good to retire the older ones while they could still retire with dignity, and relatively mishap free. Still, it's very sad to see them go.
Was on her 85-86 med cruise as I was attached to va-85 a-6 intruders lots of memories with her!! I could get on now and go directly to my bunk or the airframe shop blindfolded. Sad to see her scrapped.
I'd sell my soul to go back and do it all over again. Ah, the sweet sweet memories of youth making my eyes water once again. Won't be long now until I cross that brow one more time.
John, I’m 64, served onboard her in the late 70’s. The majority of my dreams are onboard her. I too would sell my soul to do it over and over and over again. She was a fine place for call home
She really was something else! As an Air Traffic Controller aboard Sara from 1969 to 1971, there were lots of exciting events, but I'd say that the trans-Atlantic voyage home from the Med in January '71, belongs at the top of the list..at least for me. In the Mid Atlantic we had to alter course to the South, due to a late season Hurricane. By the time we reached Mayport, our home port, just outside of Jacksonville, the steel apparatus that anchors the saftey cabling 105' above the waterline, resembled a Roaring 20s handlebar mustache. It was definitely a ride to remember.
I was stationed at NAS JAX at the NAV HOSP JAX 1986-1989. This is the only carrier I saw in person. She was both beautiful and intimidating in her size!
So sad to see her like this, but she served gallantly.I transferred aboard in 1974, just after she got back from the West Pac cruise, and she was in dry dock. Spent about 9 or 10 more months in the yards at Portsmouth before we relocated to our home port in Mayport. Lots of memories here.
She was a great ship! Many good memories. AIMD 1985-1986. I wish she could have been saved. Her legacy will live on with a display to be set up in the hangar bay on-board the USS John F. Kennedy which has taken her place to become a museum in Newport R.I.

Known affectionately as the ”Sorry Sara” spent many of nights on USS Ainsworth off her port quarter on life boat duty during flight Ops! All good things come to an end... can't erase the memories!
I was TAD to the mess deck on the Sara in 89 when the Forrestall had a void fire tied up behind us in Mayport. All we did for 2 1/2 days was make box lunches for the guys fighting the fire on the Forrestal. Ah, the good old days, getting off duty and walking across the pier to call a cabbie you knew to take you where the fun was on the strip.
It's always sad sad sad when an illustrious ship ends her career, and end they do. Just the sight of them alone like the Saratoga here brings back memories of trials, triumphs, and adventure... And sadness at seeing them being towed like that--forlorn and bereft of the enormous power and crews she once had. Such sights always bring memories back to mind, feelings to heart, and a tear to mine eye.
To everyone that ever served on around or for the Saratoga my heart goes out to you puke civilian out. Goosebumps. I guess it's off to the great KOA campground in the sky for old number 60 peace out

Known affectionately as the ”Sorry Sara” spent many of nights on USS Ainsworth off her port quarter on life boat duty during flight Ops! All good things come to an end... can't erase the memories!

Good by sister....yours TRULY U.S.S FORRESTAL
I was TAD to the mess deck on the Sara in 89 when the Forrestall had a void fire tied up behind us in Mayport. All we did for 2 1/2 days was make box lunches for the guys fighting the fire on the Forrestal. Ah, the good old days, getting off duty and walking across the pier to call a cabbie you knew to take you where the fun was on the strip.

Sad, sad. After all the years she served to have her end her career this way. USS SARATOGA CV-60...'75-'79
you shall come in mediterranean cruise?
It's always sad sad sad when an illustrious ship ends her career, and end they do. Just the sight of them alone like the Saratoga here brings back memories of trials, triumphs, and adventure... And sadness at seeing them being towed like that--forlorn and bereft of the enormous power and crews she once had. Such sights always bring memories back to mind, feelings to heart, and a tear to mine eye.
Also '75 to '79. Very sad.
Marvel of engineering.
