Oh that is very clever, to put the totes outside the run. Didnt think of that. Would have to bury them, as our climate is cold. But then you wont have the problem of them digging away the soil around the pipe and tote. Thanks for sharing!
I was going to bury the totes as well. However I hit tree roots very quickly. So I'm just going to mound dirt around it. The added bonus to that is I won't have to get on the ground to open it up to maintain them. Thanks for watching.
Gotta love Ryobi tools :) I like this set-up. If we ever go to an open style to raising rabbits, this is a neat idea - thanks for sharing :) Oh, and the hawk call near the end - Dang!
Yes, I do love my Ryobi tools right now. They are a good home handyperson tool, and so many add ons. They are certainly in love with those boxes already. The next couple of days I went out, they were all inside relaxing. That hawk was something else, glad I caught it on audio. Too bad you couldn't see my face in the camera angle. All my pens have a good solid bird netting across the tops. Last year I had a couple owls that would hunt the mice that came around for the chicken feed, but the mice of died out after I started using mint around the perimeter of the coops.
They will chew just about anything. The brand and type I bought is supposed to be the least harmful if ingested. The silicone is a great idea, or you could use that flex tape stuff.
Want to do this but I want/have to bury more of the tote. Do you wish that you would have used 8" inch plastic drain tile? I do like the pine board liner and would really foam fill (more) around it to keep wandering kit from falling into the groove by accident. Nice job for colony rabbitry however. Thanks for posting!
I feel like it's a good size. A smaller tube would allow the lid to close better and be easier to cover with dirt though. If I was to do it again. I would bury the tote and some of the tube. I wouldn't add more foam gap area. The rabbits like to chew the wood a little, which then would give them access to the foam to chew on.
I haven't had an issue with either tote with condensation. The bedding gets changed out regularly due to births and the new bunnies using some of it as a litter. As far as air holes go, I didn't build any into this design. I feel like it gets plenty of airflow through the tunnel as well.
I'm just researching to get into rabbits. I'm in Georgia so very HOT Summers. I was considering this type of setup for my breeding does but in the ground for the ground temperature. Still debating colony style or 3 separate cages with a tractor for the ones we'll harvest for meat. Ryobi tools for the win also you're a brave man doing all that work on your unfinished/unfinished flooring.
Yes I would definitely look at doing more in ground to help with those Temps. I am considering adding a shade cloth over top of the metal roofing to help prevent extra heat build up. Even though I have shade from trees.
Why on earth were there still rabbits there when you were doing the cutting? That was so obviously a really really bad idea, im surprised they didn't die of shock.

Do the rabbits chew up that foam? It does allow water to seep in. Guess silicon could be used on the outside of that tote around the pipe.

👍Are air-holes needed in that tote? What about condensation inside the closed tote?

@@BonesBackyardHomestead Thanks
What are those tubes called? What size?
12" culvert or drainage pipe. I got mine from Menards. They had it in the back lumber area.
i don't believe you said what size of tubing you used.?
I believe it was 12". I could double check tomorrow and get back to you.
Yes I went ahead and checked today. It is a 12" drain tube or culvert tube depending on what they call it around you.

Mistakes were made. Thanks for watching and having concern for the rabbits.
What size pipe and where did you get it?
12" pipe 20' long. I got it at Menards.
I just asked that question. Thanks
