As a staff nurse (RN) and an educator; It is sometimes necessary to give a “B52”- Haldol-Benadryl-Ativan. I have been working in an acute psychiatric inpatient hospital for many years. When a patient becomes a danger to self or others they need our help maintaining control. Most of the time it’s due to severe psychosis symptoms (like auditory & visual hallucinations) that is literally torturing them. Giving Ativan (with Haldol and Benadryl) IM protects the patient from harming self or others - it gives them the peace to be able to rest, relax and sleep.
I am also teaching in a BSN program -- I will be showing this video when I give my Psychosis lecture. It both entertains and gives me a jumping off point about the use of emergency psychiatric medications.

zdoggMD any good facility will tell you, hadol benydril for the pt. medicate the staff with the ativan.... i work at a five star facility..we have the calmest , most professional staff in the northeast. i can't wait to play this at report 2mrrw
alice bas Me and my co-worker always say there should be a time-out room with ativan as an aerosol, staff could go in and take a hit, like from an O2 mask, whenever pts make us crazy. It would make the whole hospital such a wonderfully miserable and happy place.

@@ZECH1189 What about getting a legit prescription of lorazepam for sympthoms of, say, burn out syndrome? Even if where you work the staff is drug tested it should be easy to convince some doctor that you need an anxyolitic for all the stress you have to endure. It's not a matter of getting high, it's a matter of respecting basilar human rights and workers right too.

The first time I was prescribed Ativan for my anxiety and panic attacks, I was completely unprepared for the amnesia that came with it. After the first dose, I spent the next day trying to reconstruct my movements by looking through bags of shopping I didn't remember buying, and having bought ridiculous things I would never have normally purchased. It was hella freaky.
Bro I was prescribed promethazine (an antihistamine) I was given Ativan by mistake, used it and went Ativan ativan ativan 😂

I think it can be overused in the ER. However, there have been severe withdrawal cases where even "Ativan, Ativan, Ativan" doesn't work. We certainly don't want to over sedate to the point of extreme somnolence. It's about balance and not a quick fix to make life easier on the caregivers. .
