  • Hi guys, I've been living in Japan for over 4 years now and I'm not a big fan of baseball. I don't even know the rules! Hahaha!
So, many of the people I know were talking about it and it first stroke me when I found out that the high school tournament kicks out a professional team from the home stadium. Viewership is crazy and everybody is passionate about their hometown's school. I've never experienced such passion for a non-professional sport before. Let alone high school level.
I thought, this is more than just a sport. This is a unique cultural part of Japan and more people should know. Anyway, there are many more videos, so if you want to check out more about the Koshien, just surf around.
    Cheers!
    Awesome music:

We Japanese love these high school baseball game. I think it is because we feel something very pure about these games. All for one and one for all. They dedicate so much of their high school life to baseball. Friendship, Discipline, Teamwork, Respect, Self-sacrifice. We can feel so many things about these games which we tend to lose or forget as we grow up. It is good for me to watch these games and remember when I was dedicating myself to something so precious for me and try not to forget or lose it. Sry for my English.

Tatsuya Shimizu, who appears at 3:05, is currently a pitcher for Chunichi Dragons of NPB.
His name "Tatsuya" was named after the main character "Tatsuya" in Mitsuru Adachi's manga "Touch".
What the two Tatsuya's have in common
    1. his name is Tatsuya.
    2. he was a pitcher and was given the uniform number 1.
    3. he won the summer Koshien Championship in his third year of high school.

Win or lose, they all just super happy to have made it there. Comes down to: to be or not to be. And they became "to be" due to their hard work and dedication. That's the inspiring story of making it to participate at Koshien. Remember we are talking about young children of high school age, not about professionals with experience.

Japanese “YAKYU-baseball” has a unique spirit that took root and developed over more than 100 years after it was imported to Japan from the American style of baseball.
In fact, there is another type of baseball on the earth today that exists in a different spirit from the American style.
Of course, the roots of baseball are in the U.S. (or the U.K.), but baseball was exported from the U.S. to other countries, and the baseball that took root there developed in a different way. This would be a fact that has happened on the planet.
The 2023 WBC was the day that “Japanese-style baseball (YAKYU)” defeated the home of “American-style baseball.”
To put it another way, it was a battle between Japanese-style baseball “ZEN-IN-baseball (all members),” which emphasizes “teamwork of all players,” and American-style baseball, which emphasizes “individual power.”
The result was the day that Japanese-style “ZEN-IN-baseball (YAKYU) (organized baseball emphasizing teamwork)” won over American-style baseball.
This difference is due to the difference in background culture, history, and environment.
However, the real and obvious cause of the difference is largely due to the difference in the two countries' educational methods in “high school baseball education.”
Japan's professional baseball system consists of 12 teams in two leagues, and almost all of the players who join these teams as professional players come from Japanese high school baseball clubs, and have played in the “Koshien Tournament,” a national high school baseball tournament that has been held annually since 1915 (more than 100 years).
Japan is divided into 47 prefectures, each of which has one (or more than one in large autonomous regions) winning team from each regional tournament.
56 teams (2018) will gather at the Koshien Tournament to compete for the championship of the best high school in Japan in a sudden-death tournament format over a two-week period.
Almost all Japanese high school baseball players spend three years practicing baseball in order to participate in and win this annual Koshien Tournament.
Although the Koshien Tournament is a tournament for high school students, it has a history of more than 100 years, and because it is participated by the regional representatives of the 47 local autonomous regions of Japan, the level of interest and enthusiasm is unusually high throughout Japan.
The interest in the Koshien Tournament is much higher than that of professional baseball.
Of course, every Japanese player who has made it to the major leagues, without exception, has either participated or aspired to participate in the Koshien Tournament when they were in high school.
That is how influential the Koshien Tournament is in Japanese high school baseball.
During the three years of high school baseball education, they are taught the basics of baseball skills, physical fitness, winning strategies, teamwork, manners, and character development.
The stoicism toward the improvement of baseball skills, the obsession with winning, and the behavior seen in Japanese players such as Shohei Ohtani and Ichiro were also greatly influenced by their three years of high school club activities during which they competed hard to win the Koshien Tournament.
The secret of why Ohtani often says that he prioritizes his team's winning and World Series championships over his own individual results, and why he is still committed to self-discipline and technical improvement, is largely due to the baseball education they received during their high school years, when they were aiming to win the Koshien Tournament.
The Koshien Tournament has a large number of participating teams and is a sudden death tournament.
Therefore, no matter how well-rounded and strong the team is, if they fail to score a single run in a single game, they are eliminated from the tournament and their three years of hard work comes to naught.
Do you have any idea how difficult and frightening this is for these players who have worked so hard every day to play baseball?
So they are willing to sacrifice themselves and cooperate with their team members in order to score one point more than the other team.
They naturally learn to put the team first and act in a cooperative manner, where everyone tries to score one more point in order to win the game.
The uniqueness of Japanese-style organized baseball ”YAKYU” is partly due to the uniqueness of Japanese culture, but it is more influenced by the experience of going through the Koshien tournament, which almost all high school baseball players go through.

What many do not realize is the Japanese have been playing base ball since 1874.
So, they have had about 150 years to make base ball a bit more suited to them.

High school baseball players play baseball as hard as they can to win the championship.
The students who cheer for them also cheer hard, hoping for the victory.
The tears that the players shed when they lose a close game are very moving.
PS: More interesting than Japanese professional baseball.
The reason is that high school ball players play very hard.

It's kind of a shame how little overlap there is between Japanese and American baseball. Like the WBC is the only competition of note and it's not that prestigious given how many MLB players sit out. Like having the NPB and MLB champions play a 7 game series or having an international high school tournament would be awesome. There's certainly an appetite for that.

I am always wondering about Koshien since I found out about it from an anime called Daiya No A. Now, I am studying in Japan and I would like to watch this. Is it difficult to get the tickets for those Spring or Summer Koshien's matches? Since you said that the stadium is always full.

+Jim Kalther thank you for your question. To be honest I’m not sure about the ticket availability. You must be able to get tickets at convenience stores though, so you can ask there as well!

Most popular ticket will be quarter semifinals or semifinals or final.
Other than that, it wouldn't be so difficult to get ticket.
But seats in the shade will be tougher to get.
In some case, if there is the very much talented player, the ticket for the game he play would be tougher to get either.
If you go there, you will find that those school bands and cheers are also remarkable.
Hoping you would be there someday.

Dang i really didnt know average throwing speed was around 80 in japan, i wish i was going to schools in japan because in america, even the slowest seniors pitcher we have at our schools is 85-88 mph and the fastest we have is 94-96 mph, seniors as well.

    • @pepsicokee
      @pepsicokee 5 років тому +5

Ohtani was already throwing 99mph in high school but he didn't make it to this summer tournament in his senior year. Pitchers aren't all about throwing fast balls. And they do have pitchers that throw 94-96 mph. There is a kid that throws 101 mph now.

The comment may have been late.
Foreign boys studying in Japanese high school can participate in tournaments.
Previously, you could buy tickets on the web or at the counter on the day.
But with covid-19 it is now only available on the web.
Please come to Japan when covid-19 converges!

If you look closer to catcher he wears traditional catcher's mask.
By the rule, no brand mark allowed in helmet, jersey, catcher's mask, etc. So American high school baseball mask is not eligible in there due to none of masks meets regulations.
Of course, Koshien catcher's masks are banned in America.

公式のウェブサイトでもでも本拠地は「兵庫県西宮市」としか書いてないよ(m.hanshintigers.jp/corporate.html)。
