The reason why there is lot of gravestones next to the church is because of graveyards were usually established at the same time as the building of the relevant place of worship (which can date back to the 6th to 14th centuries) and were often used by those families who could not afford to be buried inside or beneath the place of worship itself. However, because it is sacred, consecrated, ground, blessed by the church, which would essentially validate the purity of your soul for heaven. Being close to the church gave it protection from evil. They were also well protected, superstitiously, with things like Yew trees, believed to ward off witches and evil spirits that might seek to harm the graves and souls of those interred.
But on a human level, it also meant that you could more easily visit (or remember) your ‘dearly departed’ when you went to church on a Sunday (as everyone used to do).
Also, actually, in the original film, the theme of it is that the afterlife is not really the end for us all; we live on a multiple level world between life and death, and need to respect the dead. That why in this sequel Lydia say that line "can the living & the dead coexist?" 💚💜🖤💀
