My local co-workers on Okinawa never liked being referred to as Japanese. They were Okinawan. After learning of the atrocities Okinawans suffered at the hands of Japanese soldiers during WWII, it was understandable. If you haven't visited the memorial at The Cave of the Virgins, I highly recommend it. Their courageous, tragic story will remain in your heart forever.

And yes, I am learning from local Okinawans about their feelings in regards to their relationship to Japan. I have a lot to learn and thank you for sharing your experience with me 🙏
