Realizing that what you are "not getting" with this album is reflective of hearing Vola from Present to Past, they started much more core-y and heavy, and then really refined the sound over time, so as someone who started form the beginning, theyre evolution of sound over time makes more sense. When you start from the beginning you see vola as a Melodic Meshuggah who kinda mature over time and get more pop-savvy
Gutter Moon and Emily have a heavy influence from the band Mew. The albums Frengers, And the Glass Handed Kites, and No More Stories are great listens!
@@coreyclip1 Frengers for songs with more of a basic structure, Glass Handed Kites for more progressive songs that crossfade into each other, No More Stories for more experimental songs that stand out a bit more uniquely. I'm probably going to sign up and request something not actually related to Mew
Yes I’ve been waiting for this one, seeing your first reaction made me start listening to them and now I’m seeing them live in November. I’m so glad I found this band through watching your videos and I’m looking forward so much to seeing them live. Keep up the good work man🤘🏼
I loved this video because this was almost identical to my initial reaction 🙏 when I first discovered the band, Inmazes was easily my least favorite of their albums and the actual song Inmazes was the one song that I truly struggled with because of all the weird chord changes and structuring (especially during the intro) - a year has passed since then, and now Inmazes is by far my favorite album of theirs (and my second favorite prog album ever right behind Destrier), and the title track is my favorite song in their entire discography... So don't worry!! The album takes quite some time to sink into you, and once it does you'll never go back ❤ Inmazes, Owls, and Gutter Moon are the 3 best on the album for me because they're the most creative and fully realized ideas... those songs have such a specific sonic palette to the story of the song that they seem to create their own new emotion 🤘 I'm so curious to see how your opinion on this album changes over time, especially after a few months :)
Spotify helpfully suggested this album eight or nine years ago, and it was confusing and angular to me at first, but the emotion kept me coming back. Now, it's firmly ensconced on my Mount Rushmore of prog-masterpiece albums, alongside The Dark Side of the Moon, Sound Awake, and War of Being. For me, the pairing of 'A Stare Without Eyes' and 'Feed the Creatures' is a perfect nine and a half minutes, taking you on a breathtakingly heartrending journey into the protagonist's madness. But it definitely didn't feel that way initially. I'm confident that if you keep the album in your rotation, the remainder will join 'Gutter Moon' and 'Emily' as favorites of yours. Compositionally, those are the easiest to grok. The rest is just so delightfully bizarre, and after hundreds of spins, I am FULLY on board...
@@inthedream9127 I'm going to do one more Vola video where I check out the EPs and October Sessions and stuff like that just to finally finish their whole discography
@@coreyclip1 I'm so glad you're doing that :)) the Monsters EP is incredible, I know you'll especially like the first and last tracks... and the Gutter Moon October Session is amazing ❤
I'm glad I'm not the only one who reacts this emotionally to strange music, they really take you along :D You're right, they already had "the thing" but only really doubled down on it later. This has more shuga and places closer to other prog metal (core).
Its always a bit weird seeing someone react to a band's earlier music and saying "what is this?" and comparing it to their later music. THIS is VOLA! This is how it began (well, Homesick Machinery and Monsters) and this is what they grew from. You definitely had to be there when this first released or that connection will never be there. The name of the band, the artwork, the sound, the track titles. All make me think of this place in time when I first discovered them and immediately fell in love. I have had the artwork framed for years and it remains one of my favorite possessions even though it was maybe $50 total for poster, frame, and labor. It is also interesting how having a reaction channel changes how you listen to music. You can't find a new band and immediately dive into their entire catalog if you want to make content with genuine reactions. And I definitely do appreciate when people show genuine first reactions! But at the same time I cannot imagine finding a new band whose music I love and not digging through everything they have put out to date. At the end of the day I am thankful I get to listen as I do and people like you make the sacrifice so we have content to enjoy for years :)
@@thrive207 I love talking about music so it's worth it to me to wait until I can make videos so I can share my thoughts with my little community. Vola has a super special place in my heart and they're probably one of my top 5 favorite bands even though I just discovered them this year. Inmazes has grown on me so much since this first listen and it's my second favorite Vola album behind Applause. It's still too early to tell where Friend of a Phantom will rank for me, but I've had it on repeat whenever I drive since I heard it on Friday
@@coreyclip1 I love to hear that! and sorry if my comment came across as hipsterish or rude at all. I truly didn't mean anything negative! I just found your channel but I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. You also happen to have stumbled upon several of my favorite bands so I will be here for the foreseeable future. Super quick take (4 days of listening) FOAP (I don't like this because it is one letter away from Porcupine Tree's 'Fear of a Blank Planet' - FOABP) is 3rd or 4th for me. Still a great album though!

The synth was hit and miss for me on Applause but it was perfection all across this album. Stray The Skies' chorus makes me want to scream
