I just learnt something new today. My fs55 has those exact symptoms. Was thinking of bringing it back to the Stihl dealership but have changed my mind. Thank you for the great video.
Awesome. Let us know if it works for you.
Was having the exact problem. Replaced plug, filters no luck. Found your vidieo cleanded spark arrestor which was completely clogged couldn't see thru at all...lol...Put back together runs like new. Thanks for sharing saved me from trip to repair shop...Thumbs up!!
Awesome. Glad it helped. Enjoy your unit 🙂
After replacing sparkplug and carb kit, that was the issue with my leaf blower. Removed the spark arrestor assembly and it started right up. Cleaned it and it’s working great now.
Thank you

Hi, Chip,
Followed your instructions for cleaning the spark arrestor screen on my Stihl fs40c weed trimmer. Only took a few minutes and it worked like a charm. I replaced the spark plug and filters and still had the problem of no acceleration The unit is 11 years old and it runs like it's brand new. Thanks for the good advice.
I am glad it worked for you. Be sure to save the video for future references 🙂

We're Glad you liked it Eric.
Can the arrester be remove?
This is really helpful to explain about the arrestor screen/grate, but you TOTALLY do not need a torch. Not sure why so many videos say to use a torch. I used a simple SS wire brush and in about 5 min the screen was totally clear. Trimmer works perfect now.
I agree, virtually all vids I have seen they use a torch. I just spray mine with a can of degreaser and a small wire brush about the size of a tooth brush and it's done in about 5 minutes as you said. It seems to be an American thing using a torch for some reason.
What is the spark arrestor part # bro??
Have had this trimmer for the better part of 4 years. So beginning of the season, I replaced major parts on it: carburetor, fuel filter, air filter, high and low gas lines, and spark plug. It ran great but from time to time, I’d get feed back when reving it at its highest setting. Skip to last week and I get this “spark” noise that came out of it and it’s dead. Replaced all the parts I listed with new ones and still nothing. Tried cleaning off the spark arrestor and still not turning over so now I’m stumped. Anyone got any ideas?
That’s really young for it to already have gone through 2 carbs. Those fuel lines should last its entire life too. How many hours a week does it run? Are your replacement parts OEM? If the hours are low and the carburetor is original I would say you need a dealer to look at it or at least a compression test. It could mean your motor is bad.
If it is bad it may be time to get your fuel mixing and storage right for you next trimmer. Fresh ethanol free gas, 89 octane or better, 50:1 oil ratio of Stihl mixing oil, stored in a proper sealed container. And if you want a long life with few problems, make sure to leave your line limiter(brush guard) on your trimmer head, this will dramatically extend its life.
I’m making some assumptions based on some of the details of your comment and the thousands of units we see come through our repair shop each year, I realize you may be doing everything right and still having problems.
Can a clogged spark arrestor cause the motor to seize up?
Not really.
I’ll try this on my 6yr old Troy Bilt trimmer
Let us know how it goes.
V helpful. Bit dodgy using torch next to petrol equipment. Easy to forget.
Glad we could help.
does the fs280 have one?
Yes it does has one that you screw out with a deep socket
Dont need to run it without the attachment on or at least I wouldn't but great video
Glad you liked it Daniel.
Thanks but why reinstall it?
;)
Don't do that. You'll take away Greta's childhood.
So the EPA doesn't fine the servicing centre for advertising violating their safety guidelines or the customer sue them if the customer starts a fire using it without the arrestor screen
You better put that Thing back
Sounds faster without it....whoomba!
I'd just remove screen ..done
