  • Yes the switches are different the wires are in two different spaces they both work the same the LED is different, you can dictate when its on or off by moving that wire for instance if you want the light on only when the switch is in the on position or off when in the on position different people have different needs the switch still goes on the switch still goes off.

    7 pin winch / light rocker switch • 7 pin winch Switch wiring
    A simple tutorial for wiring led rocker switches, for any 12volt application including LED off road lights. They are sold all over the internet but few come with a diagram or instructions, and while a very simple job, it helps to have an idea of what to do so, thats what Ive tried t put together here.

    Bottom right is not a wire that goes to your power to accessory or relay. It’s for your dimmer switch. And two negatives on certain switches that have two LEDs one will go to negative on dimmer/dash light and one to ground.

    You have joined both lights to the same out put, the single live conector should go to your side light power. So the small light should only come on when you put your side lights on.

    Look at your video, explain why the two switches are not connected in the same way? The battery wire has a jumper, the other switch not.
    Looking forward to a reply thank you.

      they can be wired different ways depending on your particular need for instance in this case if you want the light on the switch to run 24/7 or not does that "explain" the situation? I hope you found this "Free" video helpful

    Why don't you use insulated connectors? Then you wouldn't need to put on the heat shrink.

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  4 роки тому

      I do not really like those connectors they create a potential point of failure vibration etc can cause the wires to break where the wire enters the connector, also depending on the quality they can oxidize creating resistance between the connector and post or simply wiggle off the post. which is not an issue of you have a few connections but if you have many and its years later or a vehicle purchased from another person it can be a colossal pain in the arse.
      I do it this way because of years personal experience mickmousing stuff together and having it fail in the sticks when you really need it to work lol even when I do use them I still heat shrink where the wire enters the connector as a strain relief to minimize movement and having the wires break

  • @kkingquad

    I think your two switches were wired differently. The one you wired for the video had the load wire and jumper on both bottom posts. The Zombie switch had a jumper going from the center post to the bottom right. Sorry if I’m mistaken, but if I’m right, can you elaborate?

      sounds like its either fried and going straight through like the connections are fused or one of the jumpers is in the wrong place connecting the 12v+ into the switch with the load and led out if you have a multi meter Id check the posts see if you have continuity between the posts with the switch in the on and off positions as long as you know where the power comes in everything else is easy

    I am doing this to a boat and I am wondering if you can disable the lower LED all together...I don't want to run the risk of having a dead battery on the ocean. To do this, would you disconnect the 2 right pins from their corresponding wires? Thanks for the video!

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  7 років тому +3

      yes you would just skip adding power to the led post if you have a multi meter you can find out which post that is easily you can also just wire the power to the switch from the ignition so no power at all goes to the switch unless the key is on then there is no power draw you do not control

    • @briangarrett6264
      @briangarrett6264 6 років тому +1

      Or....you could not jumper the #6 pin (bottom right that he is jumpering to the power in) but instead run a different hot wire to that pin from another dash light hot wire. That way it wont come on unless your other dash lights come on. Or do like he said here and just run your hot line in from a dash light source.

    If I come off the bottom right pole and run a hot wire say to the key on power outlet in my truck do I need a fuse between the switch and the power outlet? Also would it just be one wire that is needed or do I need to run a ground wire also? I already have a fuse and a relay between the battery and the switch. I just want the bottom led light on the switch to come on when I power on the truck I don't want it to stay on all the time. Thank you for the help.

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому

      well these switches are rated at 40 amp I believe so I think you can get away without the fuse inline between the ignition wire and the switch, Ground yes you do need to have but that's usually pretty easy to find I mean worst case ground it to the body some screw or bolt. I have added some more info on these switches on my website, in the pictures is a cool little item that makes the connection into the ignition a breeze and fused in one step check it out

      I’m not 100% sure on all brand switches but when I bought mine (Contura Rocker - 5 pin) from Ottratw, you choose lower dependent or upper dependent switch. This decides what Led on switch would stay on and which would light up when switch is depressed. Hope this helps someone. I know this is old quest.

  • @goflylow

    Ok so the top 2 are ground for the switch lights (on position light and running/ off position light). You tied those 2 together and ran that to the battery ground.
    The middle is power to battery or a key switch on 12v source.. The bottom two are power for the switch lights and the accessory. Where do you ground the accessory itself (light bar)? Can't I just tie the light bar ground wire in with the other grounds going to my switch that lead eventually to the battery ground terminal/ chassis ground? Or do you recommend grounding it to chassis by itself? I am a little confused and this seems to be the better videos here on youtube. THANKS!

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  7 років тому

      yes you could ground it that way, the ground is pretty versatile I mean you can connect it near anywhere the body of the car or truck is grounded too right so.... but for my application in this vid I grounded the switch and the lights separately so I did not have to run so much wire

    Hi. Thanks for this. Quick question. I have an auxiliary fan which is automatically turned on once I switched the A/C on. I want to add a rocker switch by splicing one wire only. How can I accomplish this with the rocker switch pins. Thank you

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому

      you want to disconnect it from the AC system and make it switchable or add the switch to the existing setup? one is easy the other may be a problem. if you wan tot have it switchable only thats easy you use the same out wire off this switch that you would run to the lights to the fan hot wire. If you want to add the switch to the AC Im not sure if you would need a relay or not it would depend on if the fan is on its own circuit or not as you would not want to send power to the fan and have it feed back through other things on the AC line.

    I have a three prong rocker switch. I have it connected to the positive and negative and it seems to do what I need it to do. The only problem is that I can’t get the led light to turn on when the rocker switch is on.
    So my friends son has a 12v car and it had an ignition with key to start the car. He somehow broke the ignition with the key and turning it back and forth. He’s only 15 months old.
    I helped to wire and put in the toggle switch and the vehicle is now turning on and is operational. The only issue is the LED is not powered on.
    I did see on the rocker switch with the 3 prongs labeled “Positive, Appliance, Ground”
    If I plug positive and negative it will start the toy car. If I plug positive with positive and negative to ground prong the car won’t start but the LED rocker switch will have the led light on.
    I’m trying to get the 12v toy car to turn on with the LED light.
    I’m thinking I would have to find the actual starter wire and plug that into the appliance prong. Anyone knowledgeable that can guide or help. I’d appreciate it.
    Thanks

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому

      Thank you I appreciate it. you will most likely want to use a relay the switch power from the key etc will be minimal and the majority of the juice will come from the Batt would be the easiest safest way. that way you only need to power the switch from a source powered only when the key is on etc and from there the switch powers the "open" to the relay which essentially opens the gates allowing the power to flow from the battery to the components , the thing is all of them will come on at once but if that's what you want then perfect just make sure the relay you get is sufficient amperage to handle all the gizmos you want to run off it. most 12v standard ones are 40amp more than enough for a led lights and some other components. I bought a bunch of them off Ebay for like $5 with harness but they are sold everywhere that help?

      you could also get a electrical board the kind with the little screws in it that is just an easy clean way of connecting many wires to the same power source if the items you want to run are WELL under the max amperage of your switch. ya they have a max lol as a kid I han no idea a few spontaneously self combusted in the dash

    I have an old 30 ft class eve and one of the switches which is a four prong rocker w/ light broke. Well, I hooked it up wrong and it melted. I guess I am not understanding something because the next two switches I purchased I also melted. The switch is supposed be taking power directly from the batteries and when it is one it goes to an inverter which powers the outlet.
    There are four wires which are as follows. One white which is live and goes straight to a positive of a battery. There is another white which goes to the positive of the inverter and then there is a black that is ground to the chassis. The confusing part is the fourth black comes off of the white which goes to the inverter. The negative for the inverter which is under the hood with the batteries themselves goes to the negative of one of the batteries. The inverter has an on and off, which I normally do not keep on as I also have been trying to find out why the batteries seem to drain really fast when I drive it.
    That another problem. I am going to rest the alternator tomorrow but I would also like to finally get the switch in correctly. I have watched multiple videos but must be missing a detail. Would it be the white wire from the battery that is hot goes on the top right than the white from the inverter goes into the top left.and then that means I have a ground and the black one which branches from the white to inverter. Gosh, I’m sorry. Does that make any sense?
    The last three months have been a crash course in electrical systems since the RV became mine. It appears the dealer had pulled out the entertainment system which pulled out other wires which he plugged in wrong. When I started it and turned on the coach fan smoke...I had to basically pull everything out and redo it which I have no experience in at all. Or I didn’t. This is when I noticed that many wires in the dash had been cut like the wires for the the DVD player and Stereo.
    Through trial and error and a lot of reading and UA-cam/ I have managed to repair the wiring and figure out how it was all wired. Kind of. I was hoping to get it all done to my best and then have someone professional look it over and hopefully tell me what isn’t right.
    I can’t find any diagrams of the wiring system specifically so I have had to follow every wire to its source which taught me a lot about how the system works. I didn’t want to just leave it wrecked and pay a bunch of money to have someone fix it and not learn anything at all. Stupid probably, I don’t know how I haven’t been electrocuted. It has four 12 volt batteries total plus two generators and another converter. I installed some solar panels and replaced all the fuses. Everything works great appliances and stuff which I had to figure out one by one. No even experience. I do my own mechanics for my Honda but this is a whole new level. When it works it’s amazing. Limited money and my stubborn desire to learn, got me this far and that damn switch is my last hurtle. Does anyone understand and can help?

    Kootenayboy, could you please make a video of: rigid and or Cree wiring harness to a zombie switch? Both these harness's switch are 3 prong, zombie 5 prong. Thank you hope you can help. Alex. M.

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому

      Hey Alexander, its really not that hard, but really confusing they are all going to have the same basic functions On/Off Ground - and power + once we figure that out it does not matter what your wiring up to it if it has 2-3-6-8 wires its going to have to have power from the battery ground to the chassis power to the load ( lights etc) ground to the load Im assuming the cree and Rigid have relays inline which means the main power going to the load (lights) comes from the battery to the relay, the wires to the switch are separate the switch needs 3 wires power from the ACC (unless your running it 24/7 etc) a ground and the power out to the relay. SO the red will go to the power in on the switch and jumped over to the switch LED post( this will give power to the switch AND the light on the switch) the ground is self explanatory, and the remaining wire goes to the load out on the switch meaning the post that's activated when the switch is turned on. This is the wire that leads to the toggle switch on the relay it it sends a little power to the relay turning it on or off which when on basically opens the floodgate and sends a lot of power to the lights. they do this so the switch does not have to be beefier to handle a lot of power if not they can melt.. For the Cree I believe its red + Black - white to the relay. If you have a multimeter (the red one from walmart are perfect) you can easily tell which post is which as power will only flow through when the switch is on they also can tell you if its pos or neg or backwards does that help?

      the ground can usually go anywhere convenient thats connected to the frame and grounded so most metal of the inner or outer car any ground wire like the outer portion of the dc power outlets (cigarette lighter) etc the ground is easy as it can go to most anything metal

    Are they suppose to stay ON all the time even when the truck is completely shut OFF. I install a Rocker switch but i shut down ignition (Truck OFF) the bottom light stay ON all the time. Is that normal or Will it drain out my battery?...How can i eliminate that?

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  7 років тому +1

      The drain would be minimal as its a small LED and uses next to no juice that said it would depend on the load and life of your battery, if its a small tractor or ATV batt etc. Yes of course you can disable the 24./7 nature of this (I did) by hooking that side of the switch into a ACC wire one that is only on when your key is turned to the ACC or on position something like headlights, heaters, most cabin (interior) Acc sources (cigarette lighter outlets for us old koots) simply find something thats ACC and tap into that or wire one from the distribution center under the hood. Wallmart/Amazon and ebay all sell these cool little fuses that you plug into a space in your existing fuse box they come off of that with a secondary fuse link so you can still use the original fuse spot and add another load to that it would make this very easy to do

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому +1

      There should be a black and a red on the light the black you can wire to the battery it does not have to go to the switch or even the battery any ground wire you can connect into. the red from the switch has to go to the power on the light no getting around that either to a relay then light or direct to the light depending on the amp draw of the light and the total amp rating of the switch. the switch can be grounded to anything as well in the olden days we wired them to the frame or body but its different in these new fangled cars lol

      kootenayboy,thank you,i got it! Now,do you do a video on how to wire up a 7 pin winch switch lol

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому +1

      I'll see what I can do, though the 7 pin is exactly the same as the 4-5-6 pin the extra pin is simple power out to a second load (light etc) so you wire it the same then use your meter to double check that when the switch is in the on position your getting 12v power out to both output posts (separately ) and no power out to both when the switch is in the off position if you get power to one and not the other you have the wrong post. that said you would need to make very sure the load does not exceed the switch's max amp output or it will melt where ever its mounted (if your lucky if your not lucky its a fire) so you would need to know the amp of the switch and then add the amp rating of both lights (or load) together to see what they are combined. UNLESS your using it to toggle a relay after the switch then it does not matter what the load is to the switch, and with the relays you can get creative one switch could have one light on and the others off while the switch is in the on position depending on how you have wired the norm open/norm closed posts on the relay ( relays are fun lol I have a vid in the world for them fun but can be hard to understand for some applications) hope this helps and Ill look into doing a 7 pin vid thanks for watching :)

      Ok Im not positive but I think in that case I think you would need a 3 way switch on-off -on as if it was just on off you would be sending power to both feed and pull at the same time? and relays with norm open and norm closed would not help either. I bought one by mistake when I replaced the switch on an upright vacuum they are not expensive. I think I may have misunderstood your question when you said 7 post I thought you meant a toggle switch with on off but two lines out, sorry

  • @michaeltexas389

    There is more than one setting with those switches, show everyone how to wire it up so that you can bypass the led altogether, and then show us how to wire it so the light comes on only when its flipped into the on position. The problem I get when I try to do this, is an extreme current limit, there fore the other leds in my circuit are too dim because of this dang switch

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  4 роки тому

      sounds to me like you need a relay. the switch cuts the circuit thats it nothing fancy most are only rated to 20 amp they are not designed to run a ton of juice through. If thats what you want you need to add a relay powered from the battery and use the switch to toggle the switch in the relay I have 6 in my rig for the LED bar lights alone its overkill but if one fails it wont leave me with nothing and Ive room to add many more if I wish

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 років тому

      I think in your case your looking at adding a relay or possibly two you would wire each volt meter to its own relay and then the trigger wire from each relay to the same switch that way the switch is only providing power to the toggling of the relay's and not touching the power to the volt meter. think of the relay as a magnet when power is supplied the power energizes the magnet and pulls them together completing the circuit when the switch is off the power to the magnet stops and they separate cutting the connection the power that flows through the magnets when connected is separate from the power to connect the magnets. Make sense?

      that's great congrats :) I believe the black is also for the LED in the switch and one of the posts is for that as well, the one I used the short wire to jump you can wire them a couple different ways ie led on 24/7 or led on only when the key is to Acc (best route) and as its DC you have to have everything "grounded" though they do not use that method much anymore its all run back to the battery so you get a better "ground" lol I remember when all you needed to do was put a screw into the metal and that was good enough now your likely to smoke a computer doing that. what are you planning on running off the switch?

      run the wire that powers the switch to a wire that stems from the ACC on the ignition in newer type cars trucks thats usually any of the power outlets stereo power wires etc if it only works when the key is on you can tap it and power the switch from that most people do not want the switch hot 24/7 anyway you can also buy piggyback fuse's too what plug into a fuse in your fuse box but have a lead that come off them as well as a fuse its like adding a power bar to an outlet :) I saw them at walmart in the automotive stereo section

    Why is the one you wired up in the video different from the one you plugged in that wasn't shown being wired up? I'm trying to wire a light bar for my children's go kart but I can't seem to get power to it. Looks like you moved the red wire from the bottom prongs to the middle power prong.

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  7 років тому +2

      I appoligise for the confusion, the difference in the video has to do with powering the LED light inside the switch to have it always on or only on when the key is moved to on or Acc. (I also had one switch upside down) its pretty simple, in most cases the top two posts are the ground the middle is the power in (+) the bottom two are one to the load and the other to the LED light in the switch. I apologize for the confusion. If you own a multi-meter it probably has (what I call) the beep feature where when you complete a circuit the meter will chime simply hook the one probe to one + post and the other to the load posts then toggle the switch if you get a chime on one of the + posts but not the other
      the post that chimes when toggled is the post you send to the LED light bar the one beside it thats not powered when the switch is flipped is the LED in the switch to tell you when its on etc. they do it this way so you have more options for different applications out of one switch
      does this help?

    • @kootenayboy

      well yes like I said you need to have a wire that leads to the ACC to power the led in the switch OR wire the led in the switch to the power in the switch meaning the led is only on when the switch is in the on position the placement of the jumper wires dictates this. some people have said the wiring is different on the switches I show and that is why. I show both ways it depends on what you want to do. you can have the LED on 24/7 , on only when the key is on or not at all at any time its up to you. The LED has nothing to do with the power through the switch at all its an add on like fries or salad or neither

    NOT TRYING TO BE CRITICAL - as your videos are great. However it would be great if you would tell viewers about the wiring error - wrong connectors jumped on the switch you wire for us. Great job but you incorrectly jumped the bottom two connectors (positions 3 and 6) on your switch that you were wiring during the majority of your video.Jumping this way doesn't allow the bottom LED to light when the switch is in the off position which you show working when using your prewired switch at end. Just look at the end of your video and you will see clearly that your two switches are wired differently.
    Your second switch that you have prewired (in background of video) the one you hook to power at end to demonstrate is jumped differently. The switch you power up has a jumper across the top two connectors (your ground connector positions 7 and 8) your second jumper then from bottom right (connector position 6) to centre connector (position 2) which is correct and goes to (your positive power source) then the connector on the bottom left (connector position 3) has a single wire going to you relay/light. My reference left and right are when looking at the connector side of the switch. I hope this helps your subscribers a simple easy mistake. Again not trying to be critical just trying to help.

      without seeing it Id only be guessing, but it would be an educated guess lol, I would say the 3 powers in probably head to the different components ie volt meter, usb and switch and yes you could conceivably connect them to the same power source but you could also opt to wire them separately for example if you wanted the switch to be connected to the acc of the ignition the usb 24/7 and the voltmeter only when the car is running etc and the ground is constant to all of them
