    Its a prick of a job! I removed mine because i broke it removing the side trim. Top corners will crack thats why in this vidio he didn't remove it. Lucky my spare car i bought had a new original replacement and i removed it all with yes a sharp knife and box cutter. The trims came off easy because the silicone wasn't hard because it hadn't long been replaced before i bought it. Yes they are exp to buy new here in australia from dealership. $2,700.

    Hi, can a heat gun make the job easier on removing by wire? Thanks

      I dont know about that, that would increase the risk of cracking the glass in my opinion.

      @@MMWA-DAVE yeah i figured... another thing, what's the thing you are using from the inside to cut through the sides of the glass? Thanks

    I've developed a crack in the top of my rear windshield out of nowhere!! Even more infuriating that I don't know where it came from, the car is barely driven. So the question I had was, is the rear windshield laminated? I wanted to attempt a repair.

      rear window is indeed 2 layers of glass sandwiched together with fine heating wires sandwiched between the glued together layers. The usual failure is moisture ingress in between the layers at the edges, then clouding and rusting if those wires. If it propagated from such an area that’s what caused it. There is no fix other than complete replacement.

    Nice job! What I want to know is how they remove the chrome trim around the glass

      @@B15SDMDESIGNS on the W124 the glass MUST come out to remove this.

    Good work! I gotta cut one out of a coupe later today... I’m nervous! If you use a little liquid dish soap as lube for your blade it makes it a lot easier to cut the urethane.

    +1. .. Many thanks for the windshield, rear windscreen, and aluminum trim components removal. .. Pulling away and out, the lengthy roof to windshield trim pieces turned out to be cake. .. My E-Class w124 Coupe has had but one replacement windshield over the decades. .. The coupes expensive $$$$ delaminating rear windscreen replacement will be a first since production in 1994. .. The USA w124 coupe's of the time were production optioned with a noticeable green tint throughout all glass coupled with heat resistant laminate. .. Let's see how aesthetically close (green) the 2019 MB dealer sourced glass matches. .. Thanks again for the post. .. - M/S

    Do you think this wire method on the bottom can be done with the rear deck still installed?

      This is literally the only time ive ever done this so i cant say for sure. My memory of this job is hazy now as it was a couple years ago now.

      Thank you so I won't bug you anymore this is my last question LOL I'm going to pull the trigger on this and do this my question was were you successful and not cutting the defrost stripes when you cut through the seal?

  • @nehuge
    @nehuge 4 роки тому

    Can you take off just the aluminum trim and leave the window in?

    • @MMWA-DAVE
      @MMWA-DAVE  4 роки тому

      David C I don’t believe so. The trim has a u shaped channel that grips the perimeter of the glass (over the top of a rubber u shaped channel) and there is insufficient room to pull it out. If its a junk car you could always smash the window. I had great success cutting the rear glass out with the piano wire method as shown. This very glass is what will be reinstalled too.

      @@MMWA-DAVE would hate to smash glass, unless car is so stripped at this point that junkyard may crush the car and move on.
      Motor and trans are left so maybe junkyard will wait till those are pulled before smashing.
      I will ask them their method for how they time things. I hope glass down the road isn't impossible to find too (breakin, etc) and when glass companies will tell you " tough luck"

    • @MMWA-DAVE

      David C i think rear glass is something MB does actually keep in stock for most models. They just charge thousands for it on vintage models.

      @@MMWA-DAVE Update on this, the back window with the orange thick defrost stripes is no longer available. This is the one that came on most models. The exception is the 500E. It has the glass with the thin invisible defrost stripes like the W126's 560SEL had. It is available as of December 2023 but it is like $1100 U.S. Dollars and I think only like 10 left in the world unless the vendor "Pilkington" will make another batch for Mercedes.

      @@nehuge here in australia, theres aftermarket chinese made front and rear windows available as far as im aware. Almost every front glass replaced here is made in china, unless a genuine replacement from the dealer.
