My beloved el pupas, i love that simeone changed us from that sad but truthful title to the one of cholismo were we fight till we pass out, to one of grit, determination and solidarity (not to forgot the aggresion). the setbacks were disheartening but cholo gave us a new source of passion ill never forget him for that besides being a runner up
Both Madrid teams were so close to trebles that season. They were scary that season and honestly it might have been the peak of European football because the rest of the teams weren't on their level but they were not slouches. Bayern and Dortmund were still great from the previous season. An Emerging City team with an emerging PSG and then Chelsea with Mourinho and an emerging Juve who went on to 3 finals in the next 3 years. Greatness really
Benfica does share a lot of similarities with Atletico. But at least Atletico can win their Europa League titles. Benfica fell short in back-to-back years.
Simeone is the crucial piece of Atletico Madrid rising up like a Phoenix from the ashes! What they achieved so far has Simeone finger prints all over it.
I hope we break the curse this season. I have a great feeling. We started slow, but I think we are back on track. Also, this season could be one of Simeone's last seasons at Atleti and he deserves CL more than anyone else
Fun Fact: In 2016, Cristiano Ronaldo also beat Antoine Griezmann when it comes to Euro 2016 title, despite the fact this time Grizi had a phenomenal campaign with France by winning the Golden Boot at that time. Interestingly enough, the referee during that Final between Portugal and France was Mark Clattenburg!

I consider this approach very pedantic, being a runner up is still very big accomplishment. Any one with a sane mind would consider the 2012-18 team a very good team & one of the best sides of the decade.
@@aalamahmad25 That is why Don Luis change to be a Winner and not a Loser anymore. But hey, as long at you are happy, continue being a loser, happiness is happiness.
Just one correction Adrian, the final in 1974 did not have 2 legs, the 4-0 was actually a replay of the final which ended 1-1. It remains to date the only European Cup final to ever be replayed instead of being decided by some sort of tiebreaker (coin toss, drawing lots, Extra Time, penalty shootout, etc).
Only 3? Amateur stuff from Simeone. Our beloved hallowed worshipped and for some reason sorely missed already Jim Curtain reached 4 finals and lost 4 finals. 1 trophy in 11 years. It's like being local-ish and being mildly successful deserves a lifetime contract in some people's eyes. Atletico is similar in some ways to the Union in that their budget is much smaller than their rivals, and that will not change. The budget will not grow beyond the yearly revenue and ownership limits no matter the manager. Simeone at least gets the most of that squeezed juice whereas Curtain really didnt.
2 UCL finals for Simeone, but he's also won two leagues, a cup, two Europa Leagues, a Spanish supercups and two European supercups, making it currently 8 trophies in almost 13 years. He is the most successful manager in Atleti's history, as well as the one with more matches and has a higher win rate than other legendary coaches, and he was part of a double as a player, so he's definitely earned his legend status. Otherwise, I think the comparison is quite accurate as Madrid and Barça are massive clubs with extensive support and have much larger budgets than any other rivals in their league, and Atlético's owners don't tend to invest any own money into the club (rather the opposite).
Fun Fact: Atletico Are The Only Team That Have Failed To Win The Champions League In Their First 3 Final Appearances. Also In 2014 Atleti Broke The Record For The Longest Gap Between Finals Appearances (40 Years) Beating Inter's Record They Set In 2010 (38 Years)
I'm not following Atletico Madrid so I want to ask fans of the club - is there even a consideration to change Simeone, or is he like a Ferguson figure that will be there basically untill retirement?
He likely won’t leave until he either decides to step down, gets 5th or worst. 2022-23 wasn’t a good year (4th in CL group), yet he is still here. He likely is considered a Fergie-like figure at the club, been there since late 2011, won two Europa Leagues, a Copa del Rey, two La Liga titles, and multiple deep CL runs in the mid-2010s
@@BadselS There has been a small but vocal minority of fans who have called for his resignation since i would say the 2017-18 season, this group of people definetly fluctuate through the years, but they have definetly become either bigger or louder in the last few years, mostly because they do not see Simeone evolving with the times, and theres ALWAYS a time of crisis in our mid season, it always happens, when we start playing very poorly and cant score goals, and our chances for a cl qualification seems to be at a huge risk, but somehow SOMEHOW, Simeone ALWAYS steers the ship just in time to avoid the iceberg and we ALWAYS end the season on a high note with a cl qualification, its pretty amazing honestly, but imo, unless he loses that golden touch of being able to turn around a disaster then i dont really care if he stays for many more years, even if it means we dont win any trophies. I mean we literally wouldnt have a new stadium without him, theres no way i could ever turn on him after he brought the club so much success, and most people feel that way, so to answer your question, yes, for most of us he is our Ferguson.
Just to add to this but it looks like aletico plan is for Fernando Torres, who coaches the B team for Atletico, to take over once Simeone departs from atletico. Wasn't sure if he was staying this year as they weren't preforming well but with him switching back to a 4-4-2 formation and finding a new starting 11 which includes his son as one of the key players I doubt he leaves this year.
Basically both CL finals losses due to intervention from refs RM 12th player. No need for 5 extra minutes that match and Ramos was always offside it was clear

Atletico Madrid should have won the Champions League in 2014 if weren't for Turan, Villa and Costa getting injured. While the BBC(Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo) were shutdown, they couldn't handle Di Maria and he was all over then at extra time having his shot bounced off the bar only for Bale to tap it in and we all know what happened. 2016 Atletico Madrid reached the final yet again against the same opponent that beat them two years prior and they had opportunities and a missed penalty to beat Madrid amid Ramos scored from an offside position for Real Madrid. They were beaten on penalties and their wait for Champions League glory continues and they haven't reached a semi final since. Imagine had Atletico did win the Champions League then it would set them up for more success in the future but that final loss proves why Atletico can never breakthrough that ceiling to achieve greatness. Real Madrid winning their first Champions League title set them up for dominating the Champions League since the inaugural year in 1955 and success is mandatory at Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid by contrast will always wonder how they are far behind their rivals hence they still have this curse around their neck.
There was an interesting narrative to the semi vs Chelsea where Courtois was not allowed to play without paying a compensation to Chelsea beforehand ,cause he was on loan at Atletico but then UEFA intervened to allow him to play without Atletico paying them 3 million per leg, that was an interesting narrative cause Courtois was on fire that season and was crucial in them reaching the finals
