Right there with you on the stickers issue. It is much worse when its stain grade plywood and they put the stick on the good side - they ALWAYS do. Now you've got adhesive that soaks into the grain so that spot will never take stain right, and you can't sand it out because 1/64" veneer is all you have to work with.
is it not better to use plywood vs melamine since melamine is a bit slippery? would that not make the printer side a bit when printing. i think i read that plywood would be better to absorb the vibration while printing but i may be wrong? i am also wanting to add both centers with 3d printers on the same shelving unit you have so i am trying to figure out the wood situation lol. lmk and thanks in advance!
2:54 can’t you score it with a knife then cut to the melamine from the wood side. Then bend and it should crack nicely along the score mark. Just had a thought - With the benches could you put a bit of sound dampening (that they use in car doors) on the underside. In car doors it’s approx a 12”x9” rectangle piece central to door that stops a lot of noise. So might help on the underside of shelves. I’ve got some so will try on the ikea bench, that has 2 mk3s . It sort of reverberates through the plys like a guitar body. So figure it could work.
Another thought you could buy some of that fire suppressant tubing (or bomb) and place above your printers - so if there’s ever a mishap with fire it will self extinguish - once temp reached the tube will pipe and release the fire suppressant. A fire/ smoke alarm nearby would be safe too.
I'm wondering if you have printers working at the same time if they will introduce some vibration into each other. I've seen a lot of people just use separate panels in the shelving units so the shaking is transmitted into the frame and not the boards.I'm sure you will have a better solution if it becomes a problem. Thanks for your videos, even watching you clean the garage is entertaining and informative ;-)
Looking good! Excited to see the XL fit in there as well your filament storage system. Fingers crossed you can figure out a good dehumidifier system for that storage as well, I will be copying when you do :)
The storage system will NOT have any dehumidification. I gave it a LOT of thought and it increases the amount of materials quite a bit and there's just no good way to keep 120+ rolls of filament dry enough that you can just use them right out of storage. It would require either 1) a lot of vacuum sealed bags (waste and expense) 2) time/effort (having to individually seal everything 3) energy (actively drying that much volume would be wasteful or 4) complexity (having some sort of system that dries all the filament at different temps, etc). Desiccant packs merely help absorb ambient moisture, but don't do a whole lot to actively remove moisture from a whole spool. ALSO, once you remove it from the dry storage and start printing, even a long print (10-12 hours) can allow the filament to absorb enough to cause an issue. SO, I'm foregoing all of that and just doing what I always do, dry before use.
I have two very similar shelf units from Sams Club. I have the 3/4" Melamine shelves on them. I run 4 Bambu X1C's on each of them. Getting to the back of them can be a pain, but they slide out easily. You definitely have to have them at the right height if you're going to use the rear spool holder.
Hi Robert, been thinking about similar thing but my twist was to do something like a school chemistry fume cupboard (lift up counterbalanced transparent panel in front) with something similar to the filter you showed circulating the air inside (not necessary to vent it outside) and maybe simple heating control. The bit I’m stuck on is a simple / cheap way of maintaining the moisture level in both the operating area and filament storage - any thoughts you might have on this would be greatly appreciated. Similar setup 3 printers of different manufacturers.👍
I just started watching and I too have bins of "I totally was going to do that project when I had the time". I do feel like having the parts in clear containers where you can generally see or remember what's in them massively improves the chances that you actually end up using _any_ of that stuff. I now use maybe 25% of the parts I've bought 😂
For build plates I actually use one of the super cheap expandable pot and pan racks. It works ok. I may laser cut out a rack at some point and embed some magnets in it so the plates hold on a little bit too.
I'll work on getting those up on Printables in the next day or so. There are two different versions of the shelving unit, so I want to make models for each. Check back with me next week, if you don't see a link, just remind me!

Very nice setup. You should print some brackets, and screw the shelves to the wall. It will help against much vibration.

I've switched to heat gun/hair dryer to help get stickers off with minimal fuss and mess. I can ever get labels off cardboard boxes.

I'm not sure what that printer requires, but the shelf depth is 24". You could of course have the bed extend beyond the shelf.
