An amazing ufc card can definitely compete with the entertainment and drama of the nhl playoffs. Biggest difference is of course that the nhl playoffs go on for a long time, and a great ufc card is a one night event that only rolls around a few times a year. No other sport comes close to being as amazing to watch as those two though, at least in my opinion.

Call me crazy, but ice hockey is very expensive, so a lot of players come from money. Having money doesn't automatically make you a bad person. It does mean that a lot of these players that grew up playing AAA travel hockey at the highest level and do crack the NHL are genuinely playing for the love of the game. Very few NHL players come from nothing with a dream to make money. Most of them will be okay without millions from a contract. The game is also incredibly fun to play.
I played growing up and I was in a low league. It was still very expensive compared to any other sport I could have chosen. I loved hockey, and that's why my parents spent the money. I think most NHL players grew up like that too. Super passionate about the game, because, and most people won't want to hear this, all the other sports are easier. I had to take skating lessons to be garbage at hockey, then I had to learn to play hockey, then I had to learn to play goalie. It took years to even be bad at hockey. Hockey is fucked, but incredible.

I’ve been watching so long l don’t even need to see the puck to know where it’s going. You can usually predict who’s most likely to score during a power play based on where people are on the ice. An obvious example would be a guy near the net who’s either not covered or has position on the defensemen. That means a fake slap shot (slap pass) to that player can be redirected, or a player on the other side of the goalie moving toward the net can pretend he’s going to shoot but instead passes, or if he shoots there’s a rebound he can score or a tip that changes the direction of the puck.

Old time goalies didn't have a backup...they'd take a shot in the mouth, get the broken teeth pulled and stitched and go back in to finish the game. Johnny Bower, who played many years for the Leafs, had one tooth left that hadn't been knocked out by pucks. Hardcore dudes!

Great post! Eddie Chevers was one of the first goalies to where a mask, but they were pretty crappy fibreglass and right tight to the face. He use to mark all the stitches he would have had absent his mask. But it was Bobby Hull and to a lesser extent Stan Makita who make masks necessary for survival. They heated up their blades and that allowed them to curve them, but the problem was it took a few years to learn how to control where the puck was going to go, and it also allowed for the puck to get elevated easier.

Over the 50+ years of watching hockey the cuts caused by skates would often be in the neck area of goalies, that’s why they now have neck protectors. Boris Salming a Swedish defensemen for Toronto got cut in one game. Not sure if the number of stitches but l believe it was over a hundred. If you type in his name on UA-cam you can see the permanent scare he received as a result of that cut.

One time in the 1980s a goalie named Clint Malarchuk got his throat slit by a skate and nearly died, lucky for him the trainer for his team was a highly decorated combat medic who served in the Vietnam War and had dealt with slit throats from shrapnel injuries and gun shots. So he walked out on the ice and just handled it and saved his life while the paramedics arrived.
He lived and played again in the league for a couple years, pretty wild stuff and good thing these injuries do not happen more often cause they can be incredibly dangerous life threatening.
