- Using my Titan TTK 587 petrol landscaping multi tool, I cut my way through brambles to try to get to my abandoned barn.

Best DIY channel on UA-cam bar none. I started watching with very low expectations and can’t believe how good it is. I look forward to each new episode.
Well thanks Dave
I’m the inventory manager for Taylor Woodrow, and those gloves are the single thing that we haven’t been able to account for over the last few years during our annual safety wear stock check. I’ll pop round this weekend and pick them up. Thanks for letting us know. 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously, love the channel Stuart!
Superb retort !
I am a fellow civil engineer - really glad you give HAV some deserved airtime in the domestic DIY community!
Thanks Benedict
I learnt about HAV the hard way. Bought a chain saw in first lockdown and spent about 4 hours straight cutting up a massive willow stump. Extremely numb and tingling fingers for about three days!
@@AccountantDoesDIY Yes exactly. I've had the same and now I get symtoms quick than before so worth knowing about
Whether you are able to complete the task or not, each episode you produce is entertaining, informative, and never shy of the safety aspect, which is so important, and above all, they are always fun. Thanks for sharing it all with us.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be interested in a short video about your previous professional career thats led you here and frequently gets mentioned 🙂
I absolutely love this channel. I’ve not only learned a load but it’s edited and presented very well and has a great amount of dry humour. This new garden series is excellent. I can’t wait for the next one.
Much appreciated!
Good to see you highlight the importance of H&S in projects - well done.
Thanks
Yeah a spinning blade with no shield over it. Good job the blade didn’t come loose
I spend a fair amount of time on DIY channels and have to say Stuart creates the best content and presents it back in a way that frankly leads all but a couple long behind. Well done pal !
you didn't fail today, I think you did an excellent job getting to where you did, you can't say it's a failure, and I wish you all the very best in getting inside, but in all honesty did you really think you would get there in one or two days or even two programs. I enjoy all your DIY programs, keep it up. Many thanks
Thank you William
I was thinking “garbage dumping” but the look inside the barn made me think about “deceased person with a hoarding disorder”. Please be safe when entering/removing stuff. Even breathing protection might be needed.
I rented a machine called Hydro Brush Cutter by little wonder to clear the 1500sqm land we bought. It was overgrown with brambles and garbage. It would have taken days with a brush cutter.
Thanks for the excellent videos!
Immediately reminded of Pte. Fraser in Dad's Army and his story of 'the auld empty barrrn'...''there was nothin' in it..''
I sort of remember that - I'll have to have another look to remind me
The tension builds!!!!!!!!!
The best gloves for rough gardening IMHO are welding gloves, cheap from a welding supply shop and impervious to brambles and the like. They also come a bit further up the arm.
Also agreed, nothing gets through them
My favourite type of job, clearing a jungle. 40+ years ago did similar on a piece of land and found a 50’s BSA Bantam in a shed on land we purchased to increase our garden. Great content.
There's always hope then
I must admit that’s the most enjoyable and inspiring YT diy channel in the UK.
I do enjoy your videos, thank you for your efforts. I was a self employed gardener for 7 years and feel your pain. 2 points if I may. Start the strimmer on the floor then mount it to the harness, bigger engine'd strimmers can be a bugger to pull start at that wierd angle you are in when it is mounted on the harness, unless it is already warm, but even then it can be a struggle. Protect your back! Buy a proper pruning saw, "SILKY" or similar, you can get ones that go on to poles too. Much more aggressive teeth and a curved blade make the job of cutting branches so much easier. I would also recommend WOLF GARTEN kit, don't let the red and yellow colouring put you off, it's top kit. The only item I have ever thought could have been a bit stronger was their edging iron. keep up the great content, please.
Something tells me you have a nice project up your sleeve for the inside of the barn. Looking forward to seeing that video.
Loving this series! Can’t wait to see what you find in there. Great stuff 👍🏼
You tease, Stuart!
Sorry
Done such many times. Most fun and best exercise is using a heavy sickle or scythe with a hefty forked stick to push the stems tight and away from you in a small bunch. You'll know how to sharpen till it hums from 2 metres. The sharper it is, the safer it is. Keeps nettles away from you. Lopping shears and pruning saw deal with thicker stuff. I'm 67 and considerably fitter than most men my age but that fitness is partly due to doing this sort of thing by hand tools. By contrast, I use machinery to do woodwork and other construction.
This looks very similar, less densely packed but same size, to the shed at the end of the garden a close relative is looking to buy in London. A very handsome fox looked up lazily when I opened the door to that 'barn' and went out through a back hole near the roof. When relatives of our previous neighbour were clearing the garage and shed at bottom of the garden, that house and ours had mice and rats in the voids under our houses and, frequently, in the houses till we trapped them all.
Agree completely with the last comment. Super produced vids that hit the spot. Stuart you are amazing thinking up the content. Trip to the old barn like going on an adventure!
Glad you like them!
Stewart, I would hire in a small digger maybe 5 ton version. It would make short work clearing the area and loading a skip or two.
The mulching blade is too big for a 25cc machine. You want a smaller mulching blade, I know your machine is a titan but if you cross reference from the specifications of a 25cc stihl brush cutter you will be able to see the correct sized blade and source it.
You are quite right about havs levels, as you mention however the blade being oversized for the engine will not be helping.
This is true, I made the mistake of getting the Oregon blade for my 25cc machine, it nearly shook itself to bits.
Oh my word I love this!
Where’s Ground Force when you need them? Great job! Love your channel because it’s so realistic! What a job. We bought a house 30 years ago with a big barn. Unbelievable what people leave behind. Love from New Jersey, USA.
A massive pat on the back. That is some graft. Great job
I wish I'd known about the brush-cutting blade you used. I had a mass of bramble to clear and that would have saved bagging time. The Screwfix welding gloves are great for handling brambles; long and resist penetration!
I've also used the Titan multi-tool for a while. If you find it won't start after a year or two, check the fuel lines inside the fuel tank. Mine had disintegrated; they weren't resistant to the fuel! Plus the hedge cutting arm no longer attaches so easily,. The tube on the main tool head must now be no longer straight since the spline is no longer central. It just may not be strong enough.
Being of a curious nature I was looking forward to this one. Who knows what treasure you might find in there. I shall have to wait for part 2. Great video Stuart, love these little adventure vlogs you put out. Top quality.
Thanks for sharing! can't wait for the next installment.
With the petrol strimmer/ brush cutter I used to work for the council using the Stihl type with the big bull horns handles and they’re so much easier to control and use. You set the height of the harness so it pivots off that and takes all the strain.
Great vid though and can’t wait to finally get in there.
Having used the other Stihl tools, I'm sure their petrol tools are better than the cheap Titan stuff
Gets even more interesting as you progress Stuart.
Not a fail Stuart great progress . I agree with a previous comment , one of the best channels on worthy of TV ( better than a lot on TV ! ) great humour by the way ) bet when you had a shower and a glass of wine you realised how well you'd actually done . Top drawer . 👍
Its a small world. Been doing the exact same thing today about an acre and has taken all day with two skips both full of scrap an unsalvageable workshop and me and my lad are cream cracked. Gonna put some proper drains and some foundations for a new upgraded worshop/store tomorrow and a fence on the weekend. Every sympathy sir but we now have access to the stream which was our goal and renders the final piece of our site back as a fully productive area. Great vid and as I said its bleeding hard graft.
Sounds very similar in lots of ways - you will know how I feel!
The suspense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣
For a long while I thought you weren't even going to get to the barn but you made it ! It just means we will be looking forward even more to the next 'episode'.
Thanks
Great Stuart, can't wait for the next episode. Cheers.
Phil.
One small step at a time buddy 👍🏻 grate to see you get to the barn can’t wait to see what you have in there
Great video, watch out for any asbestos panels though in those old out buildings!
Looks as if your going to be busy cleaning up this area for sometime. Looking forward to your hard work to getting it sorted. At least you have made a start. LOL 👍👏👍👏👍👏🏴
Can't wait to see 😍
This is like a true treasure hunt! While I can see this is a huge amount of back breaking work this is just awesome content.
I Like your comment on the Gloves. NB - Always used your own PPE never borrow due to hygienic reasons.
Don't be too hard on yourself. I wouldn't call it a failure. It may be a set Bach, but you're on the right track. Please keep going. I personally find your channel educational. Thank you
Thank you
I have been looking forward to this. Such excitement.
Thanks Bill
You have done ever so well but with respect I think you need to hire a 22 ton digger for the day! Plus 3 or 4 8 yard skips!👍
When we bought our house the previous owners were very keen gardeners. Despite our own efforts including strimming with a top of the range Stihl, we found the landscape gardener using his tracked digger saved us a lot of time.
Maybe one day!
First "cliffhanger" episode Stuart? I will be tuned for part two! If you find a violin and a painting in the abandoned barn that are signed "Stradivarius" and "Da Vinci", the former couldn't paint and the latter was rubbish at building musical instruments...
I sort of think that the only thing I'm really going to find is a large bill from the skip company!
Just like watching Indiana Jones, waiting to see the swap of bag full of stones for the idol on the plinth!!!! Watch out for the blow darts, booby traps and rolling rocks Stuart.
@@oldandbroken I hadn't thought of that - is there PPE for blow darts?
It's like an episode of Lost! You might find a button in there you have to keep pressing.
🤣
Great episode Stuart. I bet your fingers are crossed for a classic car or bike barn find.
So much “treasure”, you are indeed a lucky man Stuart!
I’ve found using a cordless (Dewalt) reciprocating saw with Saxon blades is very effective at cutting back trees and shrubs, chews through the timber and it’s light enough and agile enough to get in between the branches.
You mentioned getting a skip for all the rubbish in one of the earlier videos, I’d suggest keeping all the metal to one side and taking it to a scrap metal merchant. The price of steel, copper and aluminum has gone up a lot recently and you’ll get a few £ for it
What a mission to get to that barn! Well done Stuart, never easy work and I'm sure the video editing makes it look like a piece of cake but you were probably blowing after that effort! Looking forward to seeing the next episode on this project
I definitely wouldn't call it a failure as you have started to make real progress. Looking forward to see what treasures lurk within the barn.Keep up the good work.👍
You and me both!
What a kip! I mean that in the best possible way, I’d love to be doing what you are doing. Good luck to you Stuart 👍
Brilliant video and loved the slightly dramatic music as you approached the window 😂.
Looking forward to seeing your next video thanks 😊👍
Oh my word Stuart….just looking through the window at what is inside looks like a nightmare. As you say ‘what a job’…..poor you. Please take care and be safe, much love from South Africa
Thanks Val
Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter looking through the hole when they first discovered Tutankhamen's tomb springs to mind, " Can you see anything?", " Yes, wonderful things! " though maybe not with quite as much expectation !!! lol
My father suffered from white finger. He developed it from working chainsaws while he worked for the Forestry Commission after he left school. As I recall he received compensation for it even though there was no such thing as PPE back then.
And most people still won't know what that is - thanks for sharing.
Something so depressing about other people’s abandoned rubbish....but it will be rewarding to get it sorted!
"what a job" indeed. Good work Stuart, not easy tackling a project like this on your own and filming. Proper Job.
You are very right there - filming this type of thing while doing it is a lot harder than everyone thinks
Good luck clearing that barn out, setting fire to it might be cheaper than the cost of skips and labour
Battery recip saw for those thicker branches Stuart. I found an 8” ‘green wood’ blade in either Lidl, or Aldi a couple of weeks ago. 6 inch limbs, no problem.
I have one of those titan 25cc machines and they do have a fair amount of vibration. More than other similar machines in my opinion.
Aw Stuart! Honestly thought there maybe an antique Ferrari sat in the barn!
What a job you have on your hands there. Some very wise words on working safe and being careful at all times as well.
Looking forward to more on the garden series, what red blooded male wouldn't want to have a go with that beast of a bush cutter!
Well done so far!
Love this channel, never disappoints and enjoyable every time. I get excited every time I get a notification for a new Proper DIY episode 👍
Well thank you very much
You might need to buy a skip company next to get rid of all the rubbish ! Thanks for loaning Keith Brown your cement mixer the other week. Great videos and enjoying your adventures with your new land.
i think so - thanks Tony
Exciting stuff, hope when you finally get in there you will find some useful tools. The gas bottle is worth something at the moment as there is a nationwide shortage. Have fun, stay safe 😃👍
No the gas bottle is dangerous. That much rust on a pressure vessel, there’s no way I would put any pressure in it. Gas bottle explosions are available on UA-cam they make good videos.
@@davideyres955 it had gas in it as shown by Stuart in the video. The bottle is exchanged for a full one and the old one would be decommissioned by the gas retailer.
Thanks Simon
i have a similar property on our property we purchased a few years ago...junk everywhere and not maintained
Please people- bear in mind that hedgehogs may be sleeping or hibernating on ground level. Thousands of them come to a ghastly end because people don't know they are there 👍🏻
Not a fail mate, you got to the barn and looked inside. To do that work and film as well takes time effort. Good advice about the safety gear.
Thanks 👍
I look forward to seeing what treasures you uncover when you finally get into the barn mate. Stay safe and best wishes
Thanks Les
That hard craft, a honest days work.
Alas no vintage Bentley barn find.
No, I'm afraid not
Stuart…a true Jedi at 2:55 🤣 Another top quality video mate!
I've been waiting for this episode and now we're left on a cliff hanger again. I hope you get around to it next week. I spied something in there with big red handles. A hand mower? A roller? Some sort of manual plough?
0:28 sorry Stuart, for this comment but all I can here is ‘so yesterday is today’ lol - I’m only 60 seconds in, looking forward and settling i to the next 13/14 minutes
Looks like there is a little rotovator or soil tiller in there - would certainly come in handy for the next bout of work. Very much enjoying this channel, such a great find with me doing a load of garden work at the moment.
Thanks Chris
The way I used to tackle brambles etc was to use hedge cutters and a pitch fork.
Have you thought of using a cordless battery D-Handle Reciprocating Saw with wood pruing blade (sold seperately) which makes quick work of pruning to cut the tree branches
like raiders off the lost garage stuart 😀😀😀 hard work but satisfying when iits all cleaned up
Can't wait for next episode. Will there be a body in there? Will there be a Picasso wrapped in rags? Will there be an old vintage farm tractor worth a mint? Will the water tank be full of gold Roman coins?
Gawd, I won't be able to sleep until this hypertension has eased!
Well I doubt there will be a Picasso. All of his works are carefully catalogue and accounted for. The only possibility would be an unfinished study that was lost somewhere but I doubt it. Could be piles of trash or old furniture that no one wanted to hull off to the town dump.
You never know!
@13:37 is that a white cat up high?
It is and when it jumped out it scared the crap out of me but I didn't get it on camera.
Goodness me Stuart, you've certainly got your work cut out with this one. As I was watching I was thinking "maybe a JCB and a few big skips?". And not a fail when you continue to upload such good content! Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good luck!
Thanks
It's a bit of exploring, always exciting. It's not really a fail tbh, you reached it! Now getting into it might be another video, but clearing it, surely will be a third one... All that stuff in there, that's more than a couple of years hoarding that... Still, can't wait for the next installment! Keep it up Stuart! 👍
Thank you
I trust the previous owner will cover the cost of the skip you will need! Good work!
SKIPS

Probably the best prawn cocktail crisps you can buy
Just melt in your mouth
Hi Stuart, when’s the follow up to this video, I’m even getting grief from her indoors about when we’ll see inside!
Brilliant vlog 👍🏻
Thanks
Gripping drama! Great video.
OMG I hope you don't find any dead bodies!
😧
I have the same Titan kit. I am surprised that you haven't had to request the fuel / air mixture screwdriver to get it running properly. I would suggest that if the engine is bogging down on heavier cuts that could be the issue. Oh and that looks like a rhododendron
All this lot has to be shifted(brambles etc.). What about 1 man and his dozer for a day. Get it all shifted at once . Then a nice we bonfire as long as you are not in a smokeless zone.. Thanks for vid. Good stuff.😁
I worked for Tayler Woodrow homes, I was wondering where those gloves had gone…🤣😂🤣
Very Good, was that Doctor Livingstone I saw behind the jungle. Its great keep it up
Welcome to my world , hard isn't it .
You got to love this channel :) . I purchased the same tool a year so back but mine came from B&Q and was badged 'Macallister". I know where you are coming from. The vibration and noise is not pleasant and to cap it all mine won't even start now. Wish I had saved more and went for the Stihl. Looking forward to the great reveal.
Thanks Steve
Last time I lifted a bit of corrugated iron it had a 3 foot grass snake under it
For me it was a red belly black snake. Straya Maaate!
Nice video Stuart - you've got me dead intrigued and wondering what treasures in the lightest possible meaning of treasures you have hidden away in there
Don't you just love a good brush cutter 👍 I bet that bucket of dirty water you found under those brambles stunk to high heaven when you tipped it out.. Good work 💪
That was a good start. 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi Stuart, I'm from Taylor Woodrow and I'm gonna need those gloves back... 😂
Ohh the suspense ............
