    AVAILABLE SIZES & MAX PRESSURES shinkotyres.com.au/shop/705-series/
    TYRE REVIEW STRATEGY Ever researched a specific tyre and find some riders love it, others hate it? Some say it lasts forever, others say it barely lasted three rides? Our strategy is to spend hours collecting as many owner reports (and any objective reviews) as possible. We combine this with our own experience with the tyre, then publish a review that hopefully will show what most riders think. We also invite viewers to comments on these videos. If any positive or negative comments are really relevant we'll post them here in the pinned first comment.

    I love these tires. I have them on a well equipped DR and I was able to tour all of eastern Canada before I bought a second set. I’m no spring chicken and take it easy when off road but they are more than capable for an old guy who has been riding over 50 years.

    I just got a set on my Versys 650. Replaced Pirelli Scorpions. Which is also a great tire, but be honest with yourself about gravel/tar riding. I scrubbed my Pirelli’s off on all tar riding.
    The Shinko’s are ideal tires for 80/20 riding.
    Good stability & bite on loose gravel.
    Very good on dry tar & good on wet tar.
    The bike rides & handles great. The best it has been on 3 different sets of tires.
    We will see about tread wear & longevity.
    Can’t beat the price.

    I've used these tyres for the three years i've had my TA. The rear was a Shinko and had about 30% life left in it. The front was a worn out Scorpion. I went with new Shinkos front and rear and haven't looked back. I've put about 19k on the clock over that time and am about to replace the rear for a 2nd time. The front is still going strong. I've been very happy with the value, mileage and overall performance in both wet and dry. The off-road performance is quite acceptable for my kind of riding also. I'd give them an 8/10.

    G'day Gents. I'm running these tyres at the moment -- front and rear on my R1250GSA and front only on my wife's R1250R. To date we have mainly used Conti TKC70s. With supply difficulties for the TKC70 and pricing that has just gone stupid of late, we thought we'd give the Shinkos a try. We live in northern Victoria, so lots of boring straight roads, however we travel all year 'round. No heavy duty offroading but a fair amount of dirt roads. I don't have a car so the GSA gets used for everything.
    Dry tarmac performance is brilliant. I have more trust and feel in the front end than I can ever remember. It's easy to really lean hard on the front tyre into corners. Dirt road performance is very acceptable. We run TKC70s (or the 705s) mainly to mitigate puncture risk. My wife's bikes (F800R then R1200R and now R1250R) was particularly susceptible on normal road tyres.
    Wet weather bitumen is a whole different story.
    These tyres are bl@@dy LETHAL!!
    In the last 3 weeks I've had five instances of completely losing either the front or rear end. Last week whilst heading over into Mansfield on the Maroondah Hwy in light rain, I pulled out to pass a ute that was doing about 95km/h. I was in top gear yet the rear wheel spun up and the bike snapped sideways.
    My heartrate is still coming back down after the latest incident. Heading back home from Bunnings in Echuca on a well-paved back road, I was accelerating around a bend -- the road was damp but not sopping wet. I was doing 100km/h"-ish" end the rear snapped sideways in an instant to nearly 90 degrees. I thought I was going to highside. I'd like to think that my "exceptional bike skills" saved me from serious injury or worse but if I'm honest with myself it was probably the BMW's stability control. Although on the minimum setting it was still active.
    The other three instances (two front and one rear) were not as dramatic as the two above but all occurred on wet roads. It is quite possible that white lines played a part in at least some of these incidents. In 42 years of riding and a squillion kilometres, this incident is the scariest thing I've experienced on two wheels since my learner days.

    I’ve had these tires on my DR650, Yamaha Super Tenere, KTM1190, and now on a KTM790. They’re hard to beat for their purpose especially for the cost. The only negative I’ve had is with the last set the front tire took a bit more weights to balance but that’s negligible. As compared to other similar tires I’ve had (e.g. TKC 70
    And others), These seem to hook up better and I can’t tell any difference with road noise.

    Been running these tyres for nearly twenty years on my Transalps and absolutely love them. Have a lot of gravel roads here in NZ and they are perfect. Never had any issues in the wet, but I do try to avoid riding in the rain these days! Dry tar traction is great and you can hang out in the corners with the best of them.

    I've used them on my DL650 for years, I find them good. On road when new there's a bit of extra noise, also had some interesting resonance at 70kph on certain stretches of road but it's an uncommon speed for me to ride at so no big issue. Off road have taken it up lose rocks, dirt trails and water holes without issue. Packs full of sticky mud and turns into racing slick on thick mud is all.

    2021 dr650. Replaced the original deathwings (rear deathwing lasted me 7500km with 1mm to treadwear indicator on rear - front was fine but I didnt like the tyre) with a set of shinko 705 front and back. Rear shinko lasted me 12,500km with 2mm more wear left to tread wear indicators so ive now replaced it with another shinko 705, fronts got plenty of tread left. No complaints here - I dont own a car so im a all weather rider - been ok in the wet for me sofar but Im really careful on wet roads. Local bike shop mentioned they have become real popular lately. I found the deathwings skated around on local marbles road until i dropped to 20PSI while the shinko 705 on same road I can keep at 25psi and do the same speed the deathwings did at 20psi. Im not a hardcore offroader.

    I've had a couple sets on my r1200gs. Generally happy with them and the offroad performance is better than expected. Only downside is the rears wear out significantly after about 3,000 miles. Front is holding up well after almost 6,000 miles. No cupping or abnormal tire wear.

  • @cobrin6437
    @cobrin6437 2 роки тому +1

    I agree with your tester, they punch above their weight, or at least behave like a great 80/20 should. I don't notice any noise and wet weather in the topics is fine when riding to the conditions like you should. My first set back in 2020 lasted 26K kms. So I bought another rear and I'm still on the same front tyre. No good in sand, mud or wet soaked grass, the rear spun pretty bad on a lowly powered cb500X. Recently did Black Mountain Hideaway and they handled the dirt road well as too, the rocky step-ups and loose stuff on bed dirt roads rutted out.

    • @crosstrainingadventure

      Good to hear, Cobrin. A few guys are staying they are terrible on wet roads but I can't help feeling they are just what you'd expect from a hard rubber compound. As you say, you just ride to the conditions... and if you ride in frequent wet weather then get the appropriate soft compound tyres.

    I used this tire in the 170/60R17 size on my R1200GS. The tread began separating from the carcass around 4500 miles. There was sufficient tread depth to continue using the tire at this mileage, but not when began failing. Always ran recommended tire pressure. Many other riders using this tire in this have also experienced this same issue.

      @@crosstrainingadventurethe reviews and comments are on UA-cam. Here is the video I did, and FTA Adventures also had the same experience with these tires. I really believe it is the larger tire size that has the issues. ua-cam.com/video/oa94BCF9-VY/v-deo.html

    • @crosstrainingadventure
      @crosstrainingadventure  2 роки тому +4

      I've been googling around to see if I can find more cases, Matt. I'll definitely keep an eye out. It's a tough call on knowing whether it's a characteristic of the tyre or was there a manufacturing batch where a few failed after quite a bit of mileage... I think 4500 miles in your case? E.g. I remember Goldentyre saying 'Don't buy Shinko's dodgy copy of our front knobby, the side knobs peel off!' This did happen in a few cases (it seems to happen occasionally with all brands). But oddly it then happened to Goldentyre front knobbies for a while! As you probably know, I will slam a manufacturer hard if I think they have deliberately dropped their quality and aren't acting to fix it. But I have to be careful not to jump on them when it could just be a limited batch and they've fixed it already. This is why I was slow to initially report on things like Beta main bearing failures and helmet strap failures in Leatt, Suomy and Airoh helmets...

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt 2 роки тому +2

      @@crosstrainingadventure I understand your position on being overly harsh on a manufacturer. I gave this video a lot of consideration before making it. I first learned of this delamination issue from this video, ua-cam.com/video/Du2qDoy7IEM/v-deo.html . I also thought the problem was likely because of the really high mileage on the tire. I decided to try the 704/705 anyway. Many riders reported getting 7k miles out the rear tire so I had that expectation as well. After I stopped using the tire I saw this video, ua-cam.com/video/969rqp58YaA/v-deo.html . If you jump to minute 4:37 you will hear Tim talk about how his front tire delaminated. He also had a lot of miles on the tire. I think Shinko has/had an issue with these particular tire sizes for the big bikes. I have not tried this tire in other sizes or in the tubed version. I am sure they are great, I just can't trust a tire in the larger sizes that unexpectedly delaminates with tread left to go. However, I do really like Shinko's 804/805 tires. I know it is a small sample size but I am pretty confident we didn't have tires from the same batches given the years apart we had using them. Love your channel, really enjoy your style. Edit: I googled "shinko 705 delamination" and found quite a few threads for this issue. It seems like it is a known problem. Cheers.

    After a mystery hop in the front and several attempts to rebalance, my experience with the 705s has been a mixed bag. Love the way they handle on the road, great turn-in, easy lean, good grip. But the 21" front tire will not seat on the bead properly. My shop says this is pretty common with the 21" Shinko street-oriented tires. I'm going to try the 244's next, which are more aggressive than I really want. If I have the same problem, I'm done with Shinkos.

Wet predictable and average. That’s my very under informed opinion. I won’t be using them again. I just burned through a pair of these - the rear was pretty squared off at 10K and could have squeezed maybe another 2-3k out of the front. They are comparable to the OEM Bridgestone Trailwings.
    Replaced them with the Australian 'Motoz Tractionater GPS' - They are classed as a 50/50 tire, the rear giving the option of fully off road if you change the direction of rotation. Even as 50/50s these are noticeably better in every aspect, on and off road. They feel much more planted on road and give more drive on gravel with the front feeling much less twitchy.
    If they last 50% longer as they claim they will be about the same price per Km.

    Is this really a 20 in. tire. Man I wish something like this for my fat tire ebike. The ebike tires are complete trash!

    I find them to be terrible on wet/cold foggy roads

      Some riders are saying they aren't bad on wet roads but given it's a hard rubber compound for durability I wouldn't be trusting them too much. For regular wet roads the softer compounds will always be a lot safer... but just wear faster.

    I think these are garbage. Came installed on both the machines I purchased (Yama xt250 and Yama xt1200z). Issues w traction on/off road. Issues w run out/deformations. Tracking issues on uneven pavement and trails. Super hard rubber doesn't flex or grip. Changed all tires, and makes a world of a difference, on both of these bikes. Maybe I had a bad batch (w the runout), had a highly reviewed shop "diagnose" and balance wheel/tire. Still hard vibration at 30+ mph. Changed tire, all good. Wasted money. I wouldn't go getting the tire thinking its all that what people say it is for the money. Spend some extra cash on something else.

      I'd say it was probably a bad batch. I've seen two other comments about out of balance tyres and they just sent them back for replacements. I've also heard this about other brands too so not sure if it's Shinko specific or not. If I get a lot of cases reported I'll add a further note in the pinned first comment. Super hard rubber? One or two comments surfaced saying it was too soft and wore out quickly. I wonder sometimes if dealers just have really old stock and the rubber has hardened?

    Shinko is Japanese tire I believe

      All their tyre manufacturing is located in Korea, they still 'design' their tyres in Japan (according to the website) so their head office is probably located there. They have surprisingly little info online about the company when it comes to their tyre division.

    I’ve used them for about 8 years. They are beyond awful in any wet conditions. The front lasts a long time. However it gets bumpy and shakes the whole bike.
    After all this time I grew tired of them. Cheap but awful.

      I think any long lasting tyre isn't going to be great in the wet though, Eyvind. I'm not sure how a tyre would become bumpy over time.... I figure it must have been wearing unevenly which might be due to the front wheel not being balanced 100%?

      @@crosstrainingadventure that front tire is weird. It’s hard in the center and soft in the sides. So, when new you feel it want to drop when leaning in a curve. They last about 2.5 rears and don’t look worn. But the center knobs start protruding a bit. If you feel them they’re more round in the center of the knob than in the edges. I couldn’t figure out why my vision got blurred and my head vibrated so much. The bike felt fine. I guess it creates a certain vibration.
      I put a 21” with Battlax AX41 and the GS went back to smooth.
      Feels like a lot of wasted time and comfort with that tire.
      It wasn’t as pronounced with the alloy wheels, but the spoked wheels are heavier. I did check the balance.
      Anyways. I have one more set to go through and I’m done.
      Great budget tire though. Served me well for 8 years.

      @@crosstrainingadventure BTW, I love your videos, and your commentary. It makes my day every time. It's in my bucket list to go to Australia and ride with you guys someday soon. It also seems that any good enduro riding video has to have an Aussie accent, hahahaha!
