A BADBEAT in poker is when you have a large chance of winning going into the turn card (the final card), and your opponent magically gets the one card that beats you.
Turn is the 4th card, river is the 5th in Texas Hold’em or Omaha… anyhoo.. being “rivered” is sort of a synonym for a bad beat
@xntriq Dammit, you're right. I shoulda known better.
Don't think Chris went back to the " port caller " clue - GULL.
You are so quick on the uptake; I just couldn't think of 'to die for', and 'load up'.. aarrgh.
I was stuck on JASMINE for rice, when you just had SM.
It's reassuring to see a native speaker stumped by some of the answers, "spot ads" definitely sounded weird to me too.
I had MOTHBALLING off the M on 24D for a long time. It really slowed down my solve.
A port caller is a GULL - think you struggled with it but never came back to it.
NOR = NOT(OR)=~OR
DEES nuts
missing an X for the pangram edit: nevermind missing a J also
It's really not a big deal, but for the record my name is pronounced caro-line, not caro-lin
Wait. Are you suggesting that Chris is imperfect?
😂@@RayGrantTZMS
My sister's name : )
I've never quite understood why so many people say caro-lin. Seems pretty counterintuitive to how it's spelled 😅
I had TASTY for 8A right up to the end, but AGO didn’t make sense for 9D. I decided 9D had to be EGO death, and then ZESTY and ZILLIONAIRE occurred to me simultaneously. It took me 2:20:13, so I’m like one of those marathoners who runs into the stadium two hours after the medal ceremony.
I've always heard "PEAKED" in terms of illness, pronounced in the rather old-fashion sounding PEAK-ED (two syllables). Is that common or are the people I know weirdly affected?
I have heard "peaky " in the UK for being off colour.
I think I’ve only heard it in the musical Pippin which has the lyric “peaked as any Alp” where it is one syllable, but that could be to fit the meter so not necessarily the rule
