People generally hate the evo x for two reasons. The 4b11t, and the weight. As for the 4b11t, the 4g63t is a 20+ year old engine. It needed to change eventually. There's loads of new technology that could be implemented with a new engine platform, and the EPA forced Mitsubishi's hand, so it was a good a time as any to update the platform. It is lighter, produces more power out of the box, and it is more tuner friendly, albeit with most tuners having far less experience with it over the 4g63t, but that's the nature of having an engine out there for two decades. People get very familiar with it. The 4b11t doesn't start to lag behind the 4g63t until you start to get into really high power numbers, wherein the closed deck iron block of the 4g63t helps it out tremendously. But, at that point, you've already swapped out the internals and sleeved the block, so both platforms can hit four digit numbers, which makes the closed deck advantage a moot point. And as for the weight, if 200lbs more weight over the previous gen makes it as many say "not a real evo", then the 7, 8 and 9 aren't either, being 600lbs heavier than every generation prior to those. Realistically, it's just a case of "new bad old good."
I love the older evos, and unbiasedly (after talking to many tuners) the 4b11t is a more capable and well rounded engine than the 4g63t. Not a real evo shmeep shmop whatever, people can call it what they want to call it. The car does what it does and it does it very well.
Also adding to this, the Evo X was really the only “Real Evo” for the USDMs when it came to the AWD system. That tech that made Evos successful in WRC was not present in the USDM 8 and 9. The Evo 8 did not come with AYC or ACD and the Evo 9 didn’t come with the AYC. This is why most USDM reviews of the Evo X often say while its a heavier chassis it somehow performs way better in the corners then the previous generations. But in my opinion they are all real Evos, im not going to say the usdm 8 isn’t a real evo for not having ayc or acd just like how I dont think the X isn’t a real evo for not having the 4g63t.
I miss my 08 Lancer 😢 Wasnt an evo, but it had all bolt ons, suspension, straight pip and res, chipped and it handled AMAZING. Best handling car I have ever driven. Just enough power to have fun in, especially the winding mountain roads I'd drive on.
i have lancer gt and want to covert to evox but I want to ask.How much SST gear can handle high hp some of my friends said only 400hp but when I see in youtube some of them have 500 hp using sst gear
I would stay far away from the sst, you would be much better off turboing your current cad and running low low boost or simply saving some cash here and there to eventually get an evo x gsr (manual)
