well guys, never though I'd be BFS fishing! (bfs = bait finesse system or bait finesse style, basically ultra light baitcasting)
A very very generous subscriber reached out to me on instagram about a month ago and said he'd like to send me one of his old reels to try out so big thanks to grant for that! Check his Instagram out here - / xii_fishing
a couple of weeks later I'd bought a rod to go with it and headed out for my first session! I was expecting casting to be mega hard but it turned out to be pretty easy and super super fun!

Shimano slx DC will help alot to have no backlashesh. I tested it can throw 5g easyly and i like the sould that you hear when you cast im sure you gonna love it even for pike fishing but not for really heavy lures.
Spot named "Dan Bucknall Perch Kanal" Big fat perch, that's fun!! 👌👌
I will warn you... BFS IS ADDICTIVE!😂 I probably only used my pike setup 3 times last season and probably ended up catching more pike than I normally do and even managed to catch a 80cm pike on my 5ft tsurinoya dragon that is rated 1-5g 😂.To be honest you'll probably get on better with some 8 or 9 lb braid, I tried 5lb fluro on my setup and was getting back lashes all the time and soon as I switched I was casting much better and with less effort
@@pikeandperch I know what you mean, tbh I only tend to fish with fluro leader when going for trout and when going for perch I'll fish braid through to a short 15lb wire trace. The fg knot ain't too bad to tie when you've got used to it and goes through rod eyes nicely to. Keep up the good work man🎣🎣🎣💪
@@pikeandperch I use cahira nitinol in 6 and 12 test , it's titanium wire and very thin , and good leader material, tie it with 3 turn blood, good instructional videos on how to tie it
@@pikeandperch I go straight through with the braid. Some brands tie better knots than others (Daiwa J-Braid). A grinner (uni) with a couple of extra turns will hold if the braid is not too slippery (Berkley). Or a palomar, or even a fly hook knot. Speaking of which, a big brown gold head dragonfly nymph can weigh a couple of grams, if they are hatching. Choose braid by diameter not strength, the thinnest is far stronger than we need. The very thinnest I find too wispy to cast well.
@@somersetfisher2694 why use a trace? Fly leaders are tapered mono or fluoro and we don't lose trout. (I tried an old shooting head fly line on a multiplier once, "will a weighted line work?" and no it did not work ;) A small 'brook' fly rod can make a decent BFS rod but you need an Abu GripLok reel seat) Braid can be thinner than nylon leader. Perch have sharp teeth but braid is tough and defies scissors, discard end when frayed. Unlike mono it still holds when nicked a few times. I've had leader knots fail on the weak leader (braid pinches nylon) but not the braid to hook knot. A few braids defy knots, they slip, they're no good; the braid must hold a knot. Try different knots out before going fishing. Some knots take too long to tie on the bankside; simple works.
Delicate presentation can be done with 0.08mm - 0.13mm braid (0.08mmm braid is over 7kg, 4-lb mono is about 0.13mm)
If you are beach casting then yeah fg knot braid to shock-absorber leader. But we're not lobbing a 6-oz lead.
Great video mate. It is addictive. Use the same reel myself but I use braid as can use higher breaking strain with lots of Pike around.
Amazing feeling the bfs ain't it man . Got a cheap set to start also then just got the curado bfs a few weeks ago but haven't had a good session on it yet been after pike and zander mainly but gotta get out on it tomorrow now after watching this 😄 thanks for the motivation 👊
I like these kinda review vids, Budget gear, it's really not dead deer 😜
Nice to see you on the bfs mate!
Those rods bend like hell when you hook something decent , first fish I had was a 7 lb pike I use a tsu Elf trout. and a kyorim phantom loaded with 9 lb braid I use either 6 or 12 lb Cahira nitinol titainium wire leader , very thin wire , I like the nimble Crays on a Cheb rig
Looking fun that bfs
Yessss he’s bfs fishing 👍
Welcome to the Poison! BFS.😁
@@pikeandperch its got me hooked!
I’ve got the df 50 also. Not a bad little reel for the price tbh. With braid on it’s awesome! Nice vid pal. Also. I had one 2lb 8oz on a 3-10g rod and it fought like a 5 haha top fun.
Also if you take it trout fishing get the ceramic bearings from Needhams specialist tackle. Run them dry and 2g is doable.
@@pikeandperch the ceramics are next level for that reel pal. Makes 2g a breeze! Haha got to switch it up now and again but remain relevant. Tight lines bro.
My first "bfs" setup is aldebaran mgl 51 with a zodias bfs (since i need somee backbone normallt) and i loveeeee texas riggin with it
Ur lucky :)
I love that reel!
Casting BFS takes a little getting used to after a bigger casting reel. The reel has to be quite loose to cast the light weights, so it relies more on the magnetic brakes and your thumb. I have a preference for the very thin and floppy silk-like japanese light braid over the stiffer and more springy nylon/fluorocarbon for throwing loops off the reel. Even though it has a shallow spool, don't fill it.
Would love to see ye rod an reel collection,I think your a breaker but keeper haha
Great film mate👏👏👏
Great vid👍
good Fishing video👍👍👍👍👍
Great
Hi, great vid. What’s the name of your measuring chart and where can it be purchased?. Thanks, keep up the google work 👍
What editing software do you use Dan?
@@pikeandperch thanks bud
My combo was £80 which I got of my mates friend should have cost more 2 spools one with braid the other 6 flouro, I prefer braid on the kyrorim phantom
What rod you using? I have snapped my elf rod three four months ago and I've come to the conclusion that I can't find one that won't take six to seven weeks.
You should check out agm lures , huge range of soft plastics
@@pikeandperch I need some stronger offset hooks for my nimble crays , the ones I got are too thin in the wire , I was lucky to land a 7 lb pike , I was worried about it opening the hook out
Hi, I would like to start using a Baitcaster reel for my local canal pike fishing, Does anybody know if the Advanta pre-spooled Baitcaster is any good, don't really want to break the bank, Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
No wire trace...?
My only gripe is that he's not using a trace on a known pole water...
What is all the BFS “Big Fat Sausage” chat all about? What does it mean?
I don't know but if I had to guess I think it means baitcasting finesse style
Just another useless label to try and distinguish the difference and bring newbies into it. It's all lure fishing really. Just using really light gear. As I said above, it's my favourite way of perch fishing and ideal as I have to walk with a crutch.
Reel name ?
Yoo
Should use 10lb braid. Much better imo.
Hahaha, that outro: "bla bla" gibberish 😁
@@pikeandperch hahahaahaha i heard it again and u actually said "forgot to talk again". Thats gold sir.
You made it very difficult for yourself trying to skip a lure upstream under the bridge. You could of just fished the other side and used the current to drift the lures under it. I can’t skip a lure to save my life to be honest
I certainly wouldn’t be casting 3g weights on them small multipliers. Fair play!
@@pikeandperch fair enough fair enough
Wtf happened to all them animals you reckon? Deer just fall in there and can’t get out or what? That must have stunk something different bro 🤢🤢😂
I'm keeping my eye out for a baitcasting combo rod+reel just for doing this. Bostin's Nath normally carries his Perch tiddler rod with him, when out on the Pike, but he too is thinking of switching to baitcaster. Some nice sergeant majors coming out in vid 👍👍👍
My favorite way to perch fish on local canal. I prefer a fixed spool reel, 1000 to 2500 size, 13lb Daiwa J Braid (single strand) and 12 inch 6lb flouro leader. My small rod has a casting weight of 2g to 7g. Walk anywhere with it, a small landing net and a small bag of lures, jigs and neds.
£120 rod Cheap lol think my light rod and reel cost just over £50! Can't catch perch but can't really blame the rod for that!
Haha my baitcaster was 10 pound in cash converters with line bu I suppose they are all step n stones to better stuff BTW its 2 years old.guess its time to upgrade
@@pikeandperch that's mad to justify that amount on catching perch, but your hobby is your hobby. I suppose people spend millions on collecting stamps, so its maybe not that bonkers. It's all about enjoyment at the end of the day, and you might as well get the best equipment you can afford.
I started getting into bfs last year. Atm my setup is shimano calcutta conquest bfs and tsurinoya elf ajing trout. Fishing with this setup always puts a smily on my face. Casts even 2g lures easily. Loving this content. Tight lines!
Nice mate, bfs fishing, i know that tsurinoia rods and reels, works perfect 👍you caught a few nice perch with it! Nice vid mate, thanks for uploading 👍
Oh boy... Thanks for reminding me that i want a bfs setup für trout...
Good video Dan
BFS? Could someone explain please.
@@pikeandperch bait , finesse, system
Looks like a good set up and another top vid 👍👍
Oh deer oh deer oh deer 🦌
If you get it you get it if you don’t you sad 😂😂
Were are you fishing
He’s not going to tell you mate
All of a sudden it becomes very popular and hes nowhere left to fish...
In the water i guess, never tell....
@@BUSTERy he has already shown where it is >.< not hidden the background very well at all!
Well
I scaled my gear down years ago - stands to reason there are more small/medium fish than big fish . Got a # 1 weight fly rod , small fish on light gear . I've caught jacks on BFS and Savage gear mayfly nymph .
Check out Perch Jesus channel - he catches a fair size jack on BFS . Its great for trout and chub too .
I found The Major Craft benkei BFS 2-7 g has more poke , and is a better choice if jacks and snags are about .
Casting super light baits is down to the reel quality mostly -some blokes modify their reels with superlight spools etc .
Bigger hooks harder to set on light gear - so your sharpening tip was spot on .
Congratulations on your first bfs I've just got my first fish on a baitcaster I was like a kid at Christmas lol
How often do you go fishing?
Can you explain what BFS fishing is please?
Great video! What net are you using?
Once you’ve started down the BFS route it’s difficult to turn back 😁. The Abu Roxani BF8 is a good reel, I’ve cast down to about 4gms with it.
@@pikeandperch can’t beat an aldebaran tbh mate
