Polyester with a bi-axially oriented semi-crystalline structure (Mylar brand name) is what's used to make modern drum heads for musical instruments and can be subjected to tens of thousands of wear cycles with almost no degradation unless the drummer exceeds the material's stress limit - wear actually tends to come from the constant tuning stress stretching the material over time or a harder than designed for impact. All that being said, there is clearly a failure mechanism the manufacturer is still working out here, but it's almost certainly not work hardening.

Still on the original battery too, though it was coming due and the only replacements were mystery meat from backwater china. @@neoanderson7492I guess if you're used to replacing your phone every time the newest model comes out, like a good little consumer, then I guess it's perfect for you. Every human being in my life likes to keep their phone around until the manufacturer bricks it with a software update. The phone before this one lasted me 7 years and I'm going on 3 years with this model. If I spend $500 on a device it had god damn better not be designed to fail. I know it's designed to fail because every piece of plastic I've ever put a crease in and folded and unfolded repeatedly has snapped. It doesn't matter if it's designed to fold, that just means it will snap a little later. Give me hinges or give me death
I was talked out of one these by the local samsuck dealer as he warned me of the topic at hand. He talked me into a another less sucky brand that does NOT fold and have had zero problems thus far. Thank you phone guy.
Been using my Flip3 for 2+ years now. I LOVE it. It's so nice to close and just stick it in your pocket. The factory installed screen protector started to peel after about a year. It was super easy to replace. I hate the Samsung version of Android (I much prefer stock Android), but the hardware itself has been a joy.
Have a flip 3 5g, also 2+ years. Same as you screen protector wore out, replaced it with a softer style one. Works great, abuse it in extremely dirty, dusty environments daily. No issues
I have had my fold 3 for over 2 years now. Has been amazing. No issues. I'm an aircraft mechanic and it's always in my back pocket. The flip is silly. The fold replace a note and iPad mini. Great video, though! Ordered me some stickers. My toolbox is naked and needs some flair.
Happy Easter AvE and family! Hope you are well and basking in the sun of some southern sandy beach or an equally enjoyable respite. Looking forward to hearing your meanderings on the Key bridge or the esoteric symbolism of the rising of the sun. Be good.
Yup. When you can damage the screen by slightly pressing on it with a nail, it’s junk. I really do not see the appeal in buying these new folding phones, at all.
I fix these things. This phone was not meant for builders, out door workers or anyone who gets a bit mucky... keep the screen dirt free and this won't happen. It has a screen protector on it, but once you take it off... it's over.
Iv bein rocking these fold/flip phones since the first gen, bein hot or too cold is a definite killer on these devices. The fold is better for this reason since you can use the front screen until the device is normal operating temp. Im in the caribou where iv used it ice fishing or laid in in the snow under the car or even had it welding. If it's open and it's cold, you leave it open till it warms up id almost argue it would be common sence tho that's not a frequent trait of many these days lol 😅. Also I bought my fold 3 used for less then a new contract yeah warranty isn't a thing but I'm already over 3 years so I'd say it wouldn't matter anymore anyways. Always loved your channel Ave you taught me lots about millfukky and cryobi
Experienced "slippage" with my pixel watch. The back plate is literally just glued on with no mechanical attachment at all. So I took the watch off my wrist and the plate just fell one day. The run around that ensued was infuriating and I eventually got them to send me a refurbished watch for free, despite having paid for a new watch that fell apart under regular use after 4 months.
Thanks for sharing. I've wondered if I've been missing anything. Love my Pixel phones over the years but went with Garmin on my arm for fitness training, primarily running. Mine is zero fashion, but its taken many beatings and has never let me down. That's what I need so it's nice to know I accidentally got it right.
I had a similar run around with Verizon, I now buy my devices directly from Samsung and purchase their warranty (they still use refurbished devices for a replacement with sucks) but there is less run around. Also, Ave must have a poor device. My Samsung fold 4 is fantastic, I'll never go back to the standard form factor.
My material science class just covered linear defects and my thermodynamics class has me lost. Surprisingly, a video titled Samsuck Flip is a good way to review. I better get back to my work
I've had a zfold for over 3 years. My wife has had the flip 3 and flip4. I have seen others at my work used the flip for years. I have noticed an interesting pattern that causes the inside folding of the display area to crack. Many had the factory display cover bubble up and would remove it completely. Those that did would often have the inisde crease crack within six to 8 months. I was guilty of the same and satrted to notice my crease in the fold start to crack at the outer edges. At this point, I installed a display cover back, and after over a year, it stopped the cracking from spreading further. I think Samsung should mention that the display cover it comes with isn't just there to protect it from scratching, but it seems to provide some kind of structural support that prevents the center of the display from cracking. Opening it when the device is too cold can also do this. I've used mine multiple times on Prudhoe bay Alaska, but i try not opening it when its extremily cold out.
Speaking of time travel. Anytime I accidentally smash my phone or zap it with the welder I just go pick up the cheapest one they have. Every time the fella tries to convince me I need one with a good camera. What he doesnt understand is since I always get the cheapest phone, The cheapest one that is 6 months newer than the last one I had has a gooderer camera than the last. I get an affordable upgrade by living in the past.
A fellow traveler. My latest phone has lasted long enough for the protective glass to not be sold at the store anymore. The case is solid. Motorola stylus 5g.
Me three. Don’t give a shit about technology and work as a boilermaker. When my phone inevitably gets killed, burnt, ground ,dropped or falls into the coolant I go to cash converters and buy the cheapest secondhand Iphone they’ve got. Works a treat every time. This one has so much spatter on the screen, you can use it as a file.
I too have stopped buying expensive phones. Cheap phones are a lot tougher. I'm a builder and I've had my phone for well over a year with no case and no screen protector. I've dropped it on concrete countless times, keep it in my tool belt rubbing up against tools and getting covered in abrasive silica dust, rain, and whatever else. Haven't killed it yet. All the flagship phones I've bought have lasted less than 6 months.
I got a Flip 3 for free, and it is my most favorite phone ever. That being said, the angle sensor in the hinge crapped out a week out of warranty. It works again after a hacky fix, except the screen randomly shuts off and I have to re-unlock it. Screen itself is still fine though.
Remember a decade ago when Samsung backtracked the release of their first flip phone because "the tech wasn't ready yet"? The tech isn't ready now, either.
This is not a phone if you have a dirty or laborious job, that is what my work phone is for. I bought a z flip 3 about a week after release. It lasted without fail until my young niece tried bending it the wrong way. It still worked but the crease displayed the same issue shown in this vid. Traded it in for a z flip 5. No issues since i've had it. Love the waterproof rating on it and how compact it gets while still being able to use the front screen for music. Perfect phone for kayaking and camping, even with just a cheap thin case.
I have some weird ability not to destroy my phone...still rocking the S7, can't remember what year that is from...it's in perfect condition. I could trick somebody into thinking it is new, but it's been my daily driver the whole time. Never had a case. Constantly in my pocket during shop abuse. The only time I broke one is because I fell off the third floor and landed on it. Apparently I do that bounce back thing if you drop me from high enough.
Just ordered your "shake stumps with danger" shirt. Perfect gift for my son who cut his finger off last year. I would have got it sooner, but it sells out fast!!!
I used to pour concrete and we did a lot of post tension slabs, so I can totally relate to what you’re saying about the glass…….. having said that I still wouldn’t trust that phone 🤣
i'm onto the time thing. met some critters in hyperspace once, outside of time, and a year later saw them embroidered in 2000 year old peruvian textiles. so i was convinced at that point.
It is.. I have the fold 4 and I have zero complaints. He must have a 1st Gen or maybe a faulty device. The roll out wasn't great, but it's been a few years and the newer Samsung folding phones are so nice.
That looks like a Samsung zFlip 2. We have 2 zFlip 4 in our home and they both work flawlessly for over 1 year now, regardless if it's winter or summer, rainy or dusty. The folding screen technology evolved massively in the past few years.
I actually have this phone and am surprised to see it take center stage as one of your videos. Don't know how long your buddy has had his, but I've been using mine for about 3 months now and it's working pretty good. They do make cases for them, but they're not as strong as a normal one since the screen needs to be flush with itself when it closes, but it works fine. The 2 biggest things that have been annoying are the magnets that hold the screen together like collecting metal shavings and a lack of an aux port. Still works good and no glass break. Will update if i remember to, love your videos.
Ave, the stickers arrived and I must tell you. These are like the swiss watches of stickers. Made me and a few friends have a good chuckle too! I think my coffee machine is going to need a few of them too
Yeah I do like the whole folding phone as it fits in the pocket quite nicely, but I don't think I will touch one with folding screen. Much better option to get a closely placed dual screen system going, sure there be a thin seam but at least it last longer.
What you thought was a screen protector is in fact not a screen protector it is a part of that weird glass and you ruined it when you peeled it off. Lol I used to sell phones when this model came out and I sold one to a guy who did that exact same thing when he got into his car and they wouldn't warranty it.
I have been running a Fold 3 for 2.5 years. Only had to change the factory screen protector 3 times. I have no plans to go back to a non folding phone. Also it's only the outer protector that is "glass". When the screen protector is removed the underlying screen is very soft. After all the best tablet you can have is the one in your pocket.
I think the more likely cause of the break is directly to do with the additional layer of material that is the screen protector, if you imagine the screen bending when you fold it without the screen protector, it will take a certain "path", now do the same thing but with the screen protector in place, the protector will want to take the same route the screen did and will push the screen out and stretching it causing the break. If you think of a car axle turning and the wheels moving diffrent distance just on a smaller scale
Anytime (heh) someone mentions "Time", a quote pops in my head: "Only that which Time cannot wear was made before Me, and beyond Time I stand." It has no particular significance, just something I can't forget.
The phone's design makes a lot more sense if you realize it is not a phone, it is a status symbol. It happens to also do phone (and computer) things, but that wasn't the primary design goal.
Watching this on a year old Flip 4 in an Otterbox case... its the only phone I've had in more than a decade that made it past 6 months without a cracked glass.... I work construction and drive float trucks often.... leaning over trailer sides and crawling around when chaining down is what usually cracks my phones.... when this one is folded up in my pocket the glass doesn't wind up pressed up on the edge of anything that would break it.
Be real. All you really need is to soften it up with a hair dryer. The phone battery will last all day, not sure about the portable hair dryer battery though.
Wife has had 2 of these. Factory protector layer separates at fold in about 4 months. Apparently the antenna is compromised in this design as well. But it fits in her pocket...
That was among the many problems they had with this thing... people thought those were removable screen protectors like the ones that you peel off when you first but a piece of electronics
Got about a year out of my Fold's factory installed screen protector before the air bubbles annoyed me enough to remove it. Made it about another year before the screen started to develop cracks in the crease. Rarely use it unfolded except with a BT keyboard and mouse. The benefit for me is that the Fold's insane weight and brick-like shape have resulted in it being dropped far less often than any other phone I've owned. Or maybe it's just the subconscious knowledge that I paid way too much for it. +1 for adopting a no-case-required durability standard. Even better if we could pull an auto-sync'd spare phone out of a drawer, swap the SIM and go, without needing to talk to a CSR.
I have the fold 4 and have no idea of these complaints. Mine has worked just fine. Except for that one time water got in it some how. Either way, $99 later and I got a replacement. I'll spend the extra cash for the extra features. Worth it for me.
The screen protector probably put a bunch of extra tension in the surface of the screen thus the catastrophic failure. I believe the metallic foil behind the screen is arnavar. It has very high fatigue resistance. Ideal for folding screens.
I am ironically watching this video, on this exact model of phone... which is now on its third screen. I've never cared about using an upgrade. I generally have uses for a phone even after I get a new one. I don't have tech trash, I have project inventory. But this phone.... yeah, it'll be the first one I return back to Samsung or ATT for an "upgrade" back to something that doesn't fold.
So, what if that conductive layer, which is a mixture of rare earth metals etc. work harden over time, with the flippidy floppidy that it does in the middle and cracks due to it being work hardened. It's something to think about and might be something hard to engineer around if thats the case. Looking at it in the video, it seems the screen itself is fine but the layer underneath cracked.
Destin's video explicitly shows that it's not a rebound effect that causes the second break (though that was Feynman's speculated cause). It's more complex than that, relating to a propagating wave that increases _inward_ curvature at the second break point.
Now. As someone who has happened to be from the place NEAR our careful and thoughtful narrator, I would have greatly and very much deservedly appreciated the Halifaxian addition to concrete of shredded up plastic bags to make the substance a little less failure prone. While the bar is probably the obvious choice for the audience, us Durin's folk like the specificity.

@@neoanderson7492 My last phone went 8 years and only replaced it due to outdated signal compatibility.
Still on the original battery too, though it was coming due and the only replacements were mystery meat from backwater china.
Land line phones generally lasted many decades even with angry hangups slamming the handset down on the base.

My fold 4 is the coolest/best tech purchase I have ever made.
My Flip4 failed at 6 months, was able to trade it in for a Flip5, which also failed at 6 months... garbage products.

As a phone repair tech. Don't buy folding phones unless you plan on trading it in within 12 months. They are a gimmick for now.

Yeah I do like the whole folding phone as it fits in the pocket quite nicely, but I don't think I will touch one with folding screen. Much better option to get a closely placed dual screen system going, sure there be a thin seam but at least it last longer.
Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so. ;)
I'm watching this with a phone I bought 2 days ago while looking at the new flip phone phones and decide to keep it old school. I'm glad I did
What you thought was a screen protector is in fact not a screen protector it is a part of that weird glass and you ruined it when you peeled it off. Lol
I used to sell phones when this model came out and I sold one to a guy who did that exact same thing when he got into his car and they wouldn't warranty it.
I have been running a Fold 3 for 2.5 years. Only had to change the factory screen protector 3 times. I have no plans to go back to a non folding phone. Also it's only the outer protector that is "glass". When the screen protector is removed the underlying screen is very soft.

I’m using a gen 1 steam powered iPad with kitten chewed earphones, and I can’t hear a buzz. 🤷

The whole screen is plastic. That's the big deal about OLED. That is the factory protector, you're not supposed to pull that one off.
My wife wanted to get one of these. I told her no wait till they have been out a few years. Glad to see it was a battle I was right to pick.

Just like spaghetti, You need to immerse the phone into a pot of boiling water.

Watching this video on that exact phone... Not sure how to feel, but I agree with what ol' Bumblefack said.

Buddy, Baby. Please come back and make entertaining and useful videos. Miss the Canadian snark and overall personality
Came for the phone screen, stayed for the commentary on the existential march of thermodynamics
If time didn't exist, how would you know when to stop unboxing something?
Fun fact with the spaghetti is if you put some twist in as you snap it, it will break into two pieces, not three. It breaks the doindoing effect
