Hey there, Melissa! All of your orchids are gorgeous! Thank you for sharing with us. We really do appreciate your time and consideration. Hey, I wanted to just tell you that it's probably not a good idea to ever leave any plants packed in those sleeves with sphagnum moss, they pack them so tightly that it can suffocate the roots. They do that for travel purposes. I would go ahead and get it into whatever medium you're going to put it in as soon as possible. Otherwise, the roots might rot.😊
by the way, meeting you at redland festival is for me the best haul ever, not the plants I got that day! Your friendship will outlive the plants. I will forever be grateful to all you do. The phals are the ones I am googoo over but I want to explore more dens like you. Just not buying anything for now till I see what happens with these
Hi Melissa, love your haul. I think it pays off to go on Saturday because by Sunday the goodies are gone..as far as your gramm, I almost lost mine to “leave it and forget it” method when I first started. It’s so hot and if it doesn’t rain as often as it used to then it’s becoming dehydrated. Now I water mine about twice a week. I was told they are water hogs and like being fertilized during spring. Also, when I bought mine I was told to not put media on top because they like their roots exposed and to not use media that decomposes because when you have to repot they don’t like their roots messed with. I have lava rock under mine in a terracotta pot because they grow very fast. I would recommend a pot because the plant will swallow that basket and it gets HUGE very quickly. You can eyeball it since we all have different growing environments. I’m in Broward County and have it in full sun (you can start acclimating it around November so it’s not too much of a shock at once) good luck!
Awesome haul!! That schilleriana will definitely give off some blooms soon! Such a good find. That's where I got mines from at Tamiami. Also that yellow and pink antelope Dendrobium is amazing!!! So stunning!! Also I've put orchids of the same kind together in a pot like you do and they do great!
Nice haul. I miss not going to this show.. watching all of your videos there were gorgeous. Just use a pot large enough for both. I pot two together all the time. Odoms is a 10 minute drive from me. They have such gorgeous Cattleya. I have bought many orchids from them. Happy growing.
Hey Melissa 👋 oh gosh if I had access to a show like that I would loose my mind! 😂 you handled it with such grace! 😊 great haul! Can't wait to see what you do with all the phals. 😊❤
Loved what you got. Specially the Dendrobium from Plantío. Don’t worry about grouping them together. I’ve mounted so many orchids together and they are all doing great. I’ve even potted 2 Phals in the same pot and they are all thriving. I guess the person who told you that is because her orchids don’t play nice with each other. lol!
Hi Melissa l have been growing orchids for 25 years now and it is true that 2 of the same orchid in the same pot don't grow as good as if you pot them up independently of one another they seem to like their independence, it's the same when you split up orchids, plant them separately in their own pots or mount them as you will get better results also when mounting orchids you can mount as many as you want BUT mount them 3 to 5 inches apart on the same mount. When orchids grow in the wild they grow apart from one another hope that helps you keep up with the vids Mitch from Australia 🇦🇺
Hey Melissa! What a spectacular haul! The Dendrobium BLO Juan Garcia is a must have! I just bought a dendrobium right now, kind of reminiscent of the colors of your Den. BLO Juan Garcia! Mine's Dendrobium Carol Goo! Can't wait to have it hehe
Hi you did it again beautiful haul. Thank for taking us along with you watching from the Caribbean island of St .Kitts and Nevis love watching your videos ❤👍🤩.Happy growing
Nonsense. All my growing orchid I put 3 to 5 orchids in one pot. They grow very well. That is a myth. Enjoy your orchid and put them together. Thanks for sharing. Great Haul.❤
I got my mom a B. nodosa and I care for her orchids. When I mounted it it broke into one large and one small section. I was more inexperienced then and I put them both on the same mount, and now the smaller one has barely grown and the roots of the larger run roughshod all over the stems of the smaller and I would have to chop the roots off the big one to stop water collecting in that crack if I want to stave off premature p-bulb loss from the smaller one, which I don't want to do so I just watch the small one stay basically the same size. Since they're really the same plant in a way the small one seems as insignificant as just a leaf or whatever but I just can't bring myself to pull the small one off the mount and probably kill it quickly vs. letting it keep trying in case it finds a spot the big one doesn't reach where it can thrive, perched on the edge.
So many beautiful orchids! I’m getting nervous because my Dendrobiums & Cattleyas are becoming monsters. Will I need to build on to my shade house! Yikes!
@@Melissa-loves-orchids 2 weeks later and I have a spike nub on mine! It must have felt threatened when I said I would have bought another instead if I had options 😂
i got a gramatophylum because of Blanca and i am feeling extremely anxious with it. I haven't repotted that one but all the others I did. Maybe i shouldn't have repotted so quickly, i don't know. My redland orchids are not doing well and I am at a loss for words feeling a little overwhelmed with emotions over it.
I don’t know about orchids fighting, but I have heard that goldfish emit a hormone that stunts other goldfish growth, so maybe something like that goes on
so sad I lost my orchid pin from the orchid watch strap. I work in a hospital and constantly changing gloves. I should have known the gloves are a hazard. HAHA I am the only person the says the maxilara is strong. I am just not a fan of coconut scent. I repotted the stuff I have to say they are not doing well, feeling very deflated with my purchases.
hey melissa, even though I am undecided whether my advice is welcome or not these days, for every good advice people give there will be 10 people that will insist it is exactly the opposite. I am coming to the conclusion that it is better to just be nice like Roxy keeps saying and just let people do what they want whether its the right thing or not so completely up to you. As you know many believe the less you fertilize the better, the less light you give the better, the less you water the better. I like to water lots, the more light the better and the more you fertilize the stronger your orchids will be. I do strongly believe there is only a right or a wrong way to do things but asyou know many say there is no right or wrong way to do things lol. Recently someone said if you plant 2 plants together they will grow better than just one plant in a pot, he went on to say if you plant 3 plants together they will grow better than 2 plants in a pot, if you plant 12 plants in a pot they will grow better than 1 plant in a pot. Err, well if you ask me that makes absolutely no sense at all. As I said fertilizer is important to me. If you plant 12 plants together in a pot to some degree they can compete for water and nutrients and most of the time a few will outperform and outgrow the others, they will then overshadow and take more light and if left long enough they will strangle out the stragglers. But with orchids this takes a long long time. I do grow seedlings together and then repot them as they start to compete. So it's fine for a while. But yeah I am in the camp that long term they will compete with each other. But like said giving advice to orchid growers is not much fun anymore these days. Half the time you get someone telling you how stupid you are. And the reason is because half the time people have no clue what they are talking about. Possibly me too. So who knows. I think it might just be better to believe there is no right or wrong answer. Everyone just likes to do what they want anyway. For what it is worth, I was really surprised by a recent video from miss orchid girl (6 days ago) where she mentions she now also believes in the importance of fertilizing properly whereas before she used to think the less the better. She says yep the first 3 years people will say they fertilize little and their orchids aren't shoing any problems and then she adds (yet) because orchids are very good at recycling nutrients and storing them so it can take up to 3 years for it to show problems. Thus it takes time and experience to come to the right conclusions. Will you learn from other orchid growers or is it better just to try everything yourself and make your own conclusions over time? Hope I haven't annoyed you too much with my comments. As your channel grows you will get so many different opinions your head will start to explode. Anyway take care. All the best.
I think everybody's thinking changes as you growth and your orchids grow. I listen to advice and sometimes go with my gut. Sometimes the plants themselves give you an idea of what they want. At least I feel that, if you're watching carefully.
@@Melissa-loves-orchids hey melissa, good to hear from you. I take it you've been a bit busy lately so thanks for getting back to replying. My favorite philosphy is "we learn as we grow". Nobody better to teach us than the orchids themselves. As you have probably gathered by now I don't like people coming to the wrong conclusions when trying to interpret our plants. Apart from Nelson I'd hardly trust others much. Forget ever getting advice from online forums. It's a shame really but my preferred thing to do if seeking advice on forums is see what they recommend and usually doing exactly the opposite to that lol. You will see in time... Although it can take a long long time to figure that out. Why can't people on online forums ever get it right? Real mind boggler. At least we do have people like Nelson and Ingram Orchids and more (very knowlegeble growers worth learning from too). I'm still constantly trying to figure things out as I go along too of course. My cattleya schilleriana, only flowers once a year, something is not 100% with the plant yet though. It produced 3 lovely flowers this year and before I could take a picture they'd already started wilting. What did I do wrong? No idea yet so I'll have to spend more time figuring out what went wrong this year. Sadly it's a long wait till the next flowering lol. The hybrids are certainly easier than the species. But like mentioned if you are ever tempted to "ask on a forum" for some help you might as well go out to your nearest tree in the park and pose your question there. You will get a more knowledgeable answer every time. Not that I want to be that critical.... It's just the way it is currently. Also how missorchidgirl has become so popular over the years. She was the only grower really addressing and exposing the myths that otherwise kept getting spread without anyone questioning it. Anyway my usual ramblings, all the best for your plants and take care hun.
Hi Melissa it was great meeting you and your sister in law at the festival on Sunday. I’m the one that told you to contact bettergrow.❤ I have a huge gramm. Over 20 years old. They like to be very tightly potted. I have mine in a wire basket with hardly any medium with coco coir liner. It gets filtered light under a small tree. It is full of spikes right now. Could send you a photo once it blooms. I do not water it. I do sprinkle it with dynamite fertilizer.
