To me the love story of the show wasn't Damon and Elena but it was Damon and Stefan's brother relationship. "The Salvatore brothers may fight like dogs but in the end they'd die for each other" describes their relationship really well honestly. Also it makes me so happy when I watch the pilot and watch their first scene where Stefan says "Damon" in such a disappointed and unhappy tone and Damon replies with "Hello Brother" in a smirky/evil kind of way and then you watch the last episode and Stefan says that same line only he's happy now and looks almost relieved to see him and Damon replies with that same greeting and is filled with joy. I love seeing their relationship grow over the years

But the corner stone of this series no matter what is the essence of family that Damon and Stefan, no matter what.

Stuff with Damon was he hated how he become Stefan ( which was bad at beginning) and Stefan become him - a responsible caring.... He hated Lexi for the same reason because it was because of her Stefan changed.... So when Damon was good he got pissed ( Katherine choosed Stefan over Damon) and when Damon was bad again Elena choosed Stefan over Damon... So i believe being Damon was some real frustration and hunger love..
As of recently now, in 8x14, Damon didn't choose Elena over Stefan. When Cade forced him to choose whose soul to save (Elena or Stefan), Damon chose to kill himself to save both, which I found both heartwarming and heartbreaking, especially since he said in a later scene that he only "needs the people he loves", and Stefan is right at the top of his list.
