14 count perforated paper comes in many colors. 18 count perforated paper only comes in white. Hence, why I want to find a way to color it. I prefer stitching on 18 count perforated paper.

Be careful with the oxides. They are water based and will “react” when wetted again. I recommend you test since our hands do sweat. Another similar option: When I color paper I take 1/4 or 1/2 water in a small container. You can use the distressed ink refills (I use ranger) and add a few drops of the ink to the water. Use a brush to put the watered down ink on the paper. Let air dry. The ranger re-inkers last a long time. This methods is better than fully dipping the paper in water in my opinion. If you want to use the sprays I would recommend using the distress INK not the distress OXIDES. Thanks for sharing your tests. Always learn something new.

I would thin out the acrylics with water. Good luck. Good ideas!

For the paint-like products, I'd think using a makeup sponge to apply the paint would be easier more even. The end result with the slight modeled look seems like a winner.

Danielle in Ceramics we use a dry brush technique. It gives a powdery look to acrylic paint and you use a stiff bristle brush with most of the paint off the brush

Great experiments. I thought those spray inks would work! 😃 they are water based, so test with hand sweat that they don’t come off.

Daniel wonderful idea...even though 14 count comes in different colors if I want a tie dye look or a color that is not available, I can now do it myself... I have been watching you for about a year and because of you I have picked back up my cross stitching. Thanks 🥰

Hi Danielle... Omg I wish I could Talk to you over the Phone or something Would be much easier Girl lol. But Before I got all My Colored Perforated Paper I Painted My Perforated Paper with the Acrylic Paint and it worked very well. I put a very little on a paper plate I used a Round foam dauber paint brush, not loading heavy with paint on the round dauber brush and in a circular motion I painted the Perforated Paper. It didn't block the holes because I wasn't heavy with the paint, I then just stuck a Christmas Ornament Hook into the hole of the Paper and hung it to dry. I used many different colors getting light colors worked best. I've Cross stitched on mine I had Painted and they are all fine No Problems... Thanx for Sharing ox

Danielle, the distressed inks come in stamp pads and in a bunch of colors. You could try using it to color the perforated paper. I think it might work and less drying time.

Just something to think about. Check into Teflon sheets. I've seen many mix-media artists & card makers use them. You can work right on top of it and any overflow or wet spots just wipe right up with absorbent toweling right then and there. Bonus .... you can reuse them over and over. 💜

The distress ink I would spray on like a pump and then get a dabber and spread it that way rather than soak the paper. You can also water down the acrylic paint and pick up a small amount with your foam brush and dab it on. The brushing motion will definitely get your holes clogged.

I used to do scrapbooking and a technique we did to get a pretty background was using shaving foam and put a few drops of refill ink pad ink in it swirl it around then slide paper through it then wipe shaving cream off paper we got some beautiful results lovely marbled effect maybe worth a try hope I explained procedure OK.

You can thin your Folk Art paint out with water that way it won't clog the holes up in the paper!

You could also use a paper plate to thin out the paint. Loved this video! The distress ink also has an ink pad and you can sponge it on. It might look more moddled.

❤️ The distress inks come in stamp pads as well, I forgot to mention the pads in my comment yesterday, I picked up a variety pack of minis in a scrapbook supply shop this summer, with a small pack of the ink blending tools. These were 4 colors in the pack, and if you get the pads you can also use them to add a little to the page you put the finished stitched piece in your junk journal to add a little flare. I got the idea from the paper outpost on UA-cam, she shows you how to make the journal and all the little bits and bobs/ accents to add to your junk journal

    Whay a fun experiment!
If the acrylic or pour paint can be tweeked...maybe applying with a stencil brush (flatbottom bristles) or a stencil sponge and "pounce" the paint on rather than "brushing" the paint on. Maybe that would keep the holes from clogging???
I ADORE the Distress and Distress Oxide line of products! I have them All in every color! The only thing that I'd worry about, if I were in you shoes, is that they are EXTREMELY water reactive! They are designed to "come alive" with the slightest bit of moisture including the moisture on your hands. I'd be so worried that the color would bleed all over the place including your floss as you are pulling it through the holes.
With that being said, Tim Holtz makes a product called "Distress Micro Glaze" it's a tiny tub that has the consistency of Vaseline. Use use a blending sponge to buff it on over the color onxe you are happy with the look. Wipe off the excess with a clean dry cloth and it is supposed to keep the colors from moving w/ fingers or moisture. I personally use it on completed envelopes that I have decorated to match my cards. I use the Distress Micro Glaze to avoid ruining my art in the event of rainy weather.

Kool - Aid!!!! Pick a flavor that is close to the color you want. You can adjust the color lighter or darker. Also the amount of time you leave the paper in the Kool - Aid will determine the color you get. even if it doesnt turn out the exact color you want you can still use the paper for something else. Good luck. I use this method for dying paper for my junk journals. And it works well without mess.

Just a thought on the first paper you painted. I was thinking if you rubbed it lightly with an Emory board. If that would remove the roughness without damaging the paper

Distress Oxide is different from Distress Ink. It is a FUSION of pigment and dye ink that reacts to water. That is why people are talking about getting the paper wet again after it’s dried. The pigment part may rub off… that’s what gives it the chalky appearance. They is also why it’s important to thoroughly shake the bottle so that the pigment particles are dispersed well. You use a heat gun to speed up the drying process… and yes at last count he has now about 70 different colors in his line… I would have tried thinning out those thicker paints before applying IMHO… good demo and yes I believe the Distress Ink would be your best choice, even over the Distress Oxides as those pigments may rub off once they dry…

Interesting results! Do you think you could thin out the fabric paint & art paint with water to make an easier coating? Love the Distrressed Oxide by Tim Holtz. Lots of colors, easy to use - yep, that's how I would go!

With the ink spray you can use a brush to brush it on. Watch Tim Holtz videos on his sprays and ink pads. It will give you a ton of ideas. Also you can water down the paints to help get a better coverage

Such a beautiful purple shade on the distressed oxide and the pouring paint. Maybe the dye needs the vinegar to produce a better color, I was thinking it could be like dying Easter eggs, you need vinegar or it won't work?

Be careful when you shake the distress oxides. You need to shake side to side verses up and down because the little ball inside can get stuck and clog it.

Okay sooooo this may sound like Im on a high horse and I want to make sure that its known thats not how I would say this in real life and text sounds way harsher than it should.
The spray paint and spray ink.... hold it further away from the paper..... see how that works
Acrylic paint should be mixed with some water if its to "gloopy" just a tiny bit. Thats all that the pouring paint is. Acrylic watered down or with a thinner in it.
