I LOVE this cheesy flick. I bought it on VHS years ago from some shady website....and recently just found it on some stream service I have. Thanks for doing this one! Christ, you're awesome!
I love the way that the final act of this film casually kills most of the rest of the cast off to then spend time with the remaining character having to treat the zombies to a sit-down chilli meal!
I can just, capital letters, JUST about remember this. I watched it purely for the reason that it sounded cool watching a film called video dead, on an actual video recorder. It wasn't, it was shit. Unsurprisingly, I forgot about it but, for some reason, was reminded of it again decades later when I read the synopsis of the ring.
I remember getting out of work on a Saturday afternoon and renting this one! Honestly, I kind of fell in love with it! It's all over the place, but kind of in a fun way. It's got that feeling about it that something weird could happen at any minute. And does! Your review had me laughing out loud again! Great work, Mike! Another one of the movies from back during that period that I'm a huge fan of is Neon Maniacs. It's got that same WTF feeling to it. Speaking of Dead and Breakfast....You ever seen that one? It's also a WTF flick, but with class! And David Carradine! I bumped into a copy at a used CD and DVD place and have gone crazy over it all over again! Not a far trip, but... Sadly, with Video Dead, all I have is a VCD I picked up from a convention. I need to drag myself out to some horror cons if they don't all get shut down this October.
I remember as a kid I had a really vivid nightmare that had zombies coming out of the TV. I didn't see this movie until I got a bit older and got pretty weirded out lol. I'm definitely gonna give this one another watch.
Perfect sleazy movie to find as a very young teen, on scratchy VHS. I still dig all the unique zombie lore (treat them as normals, mirrors, etc). I had forgotten all the house shots, though.
As with so many films featured on this channel, I caught this one on the USA Network many years ago. This was back before that channel became the Law & Order marathon channel. The twist involving the two male leads was pretty surprising to me. That and the "play hostess" trick the female lead used to defeat the titular undead. I appreciate that HG was able to make several laundry related puns in this episode. I hope HG finds time to review Raiders of the Living Dead. That was another zombie film that would air on the USA Network way back when. It featured a grandfather creating a laser gun for his children to use in battle against the zombie horde. He used parts from a Laser Disc player to create the aforementioned laser gun. Apparently the parts used in the construction of those things could potentially be lethal against shambling ghouls. Either way, thanks for another fun trip down memory lane HG!
@@lawrenceweitzel6809 Rhonda Shear was pretty much perfect. Beautiful but with a sense of humor, what lucky lad would not have dreamed about her? On a somewhat related note, Mike is as close to Commander USA as some generation(I could not even begin to guess which) is ever likely to get. Would I tune in to a weekly show where he made great puns about a movie before and after a commercial break for a film he chose? You could not keep me away from that with tactical nukes. Who would he chose as his female counter part? Who would you chose? Why is my reply so long winded? Either way, you both rock and rule for reminding me of the absolute perfection that is Rhonda Shear. She was my post Elvira crush.
Useless trivia fact; the "random naked chick" that came out of the TV was played by Jennifer Miro, she was the lead singer and keyboard player from legendary first wave San Fransisco punk band, the Nuns
Fun fact: the line in Skyrim “I used to be an andventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee” is not referring to an actual arrow. It’s a marriage reference! Lol!
Zombies coming out of T.V.s? If that isn't a terrifying concept, I don't know what is. Can't wait til tomorrow to see this potentially novel idea be fully realized. What kinds of concepts in horror movies creep you out the most?

When I was a wee Horror Geek, my grandfather had a TV repair shop. I used to go on calls with him all the time. Now you just throw a TV away when it stops working...we live in strange times. :-)
Congrats on 50k subscribers, man! That is really one heck of an achievement. Well deserved. I remember seeing this one when I was pretty young. Just hanging out with some friends and put a movie on in the background while we half-heartedly tried to figure out Warhammer rules or something. That was before I was really into film, much less into horror movies, so I don't remember a whole heck of a lot. Had a good time revisiting it, though. The movie does look pretty bad. I don't know if it's just the clips you chose (though I doubt it), but the acting was atrocious. For Heaven's sake, people, if you were going to get acting that subpar out of 30 somethings playing teenagers, couldn't you have just hired actual teenagers? Oh, and my first TV was an Emerson 19". That's too funny.
Congratulations Mike on your 50,000 subscribers! You are just wonderful and no matter what's going on in the world, I can always put on the hard geek and laugh my ass off! Bravo!
Great Review, Mike! I'm gonna fire up my Blu-Ray "Terrorvision/Video Dead" double feature of this soon! I like a lot of the ugly zombies and foggy zombie scenes! They look real creepy in the Emerson! Low Budget Creepiness! I think this movie is from Ohio.
That "de-creased" line was pro-level punnery. I know I've asked you if you went to school for punnery - now I think you should *start* a school for it.
There’s lots of parodies of that scene where the hot chick comes outta the tv. So yes this is a cult classic. Do take out the booze for the house establishing shots. You’ll be dead drunk.
They probably put in all those house establishing shots to distract people from that truly Shakespearean acting. Geezus, it really is that one movie all over again. Considering a zombie, apparently got it's whole body out of a TV screen only slightly bigger than it's head, I probably shouldn't question how an entire zombie was in a washing machine. Speaking of, "I don't think they put any detergent in there, but you what they say, no pain, no Gain." Bravo. Maybe it's because this is an abridged version, but most of this movie doesn't seem like it's trying to make goddamn sense. Where did the TV come from? Were zombies just walking around for three months not attacking anybody? If the TV's some kind of portal, why not just destroy the TV? Who brings a random TV they found in their basement to someone in the hospital?
DEEP LORE DEMANDS DEEP ANSWERS, MOVIE! More seriously, though, the concept is good. Kinda like Waxworks 2, where you have all these different timescapes/dimensions/stories and access via curse.
I've spent time on TV an a lot of time on TV sets...and I never knew how hard it was to actually read off a teleprompter until I actually started doing it. People who do it live are legends. Can you imagine me on the news? The FCC would shut us down in 10 minutes. :p

here in brazil we had a show called "cine trash" and i was a kid in that time, i watch it alone and after the film end, i could not turn the tv off because i was afraid the zombies could grab me , so the next day my parents grounded me because i let the tv on until morning
Damn! I actually had to wait a day to watch but definitely worth the wait. I had heard about this film but always confused it with Demons 2, which as you pointed out used a similar plot device. I watched it not long ago and was struck by something. Between the cheap tv level production values, color palette and musical score ( John Carpenter wants his score back BTW) this could totally be an episode of Goosebumps. I’m perfectly serious. Snip out some gore, frankly some of which is pretty ridiculous, take out the nudity and drop in that “viewer beware you’re in for a scare” and instant Goosebumps. Long before Netflix decided R.L Stine was ripe for an adult horror franchise I used to make this observation about other horror films. Finally, the phone you pointed out was not just any rotary phone but a “princess” phone. You really had it made if you had one of those in your bedroom. Does anyone remember the princess phone...? Mishmash, haha, now that’s a mouthful.
That's a good point about Goosebumps...definitely could have fit in with minor trimming. The Garbage Man sounds like something straight out of a Stine book
I remember this! My dad had this in his vhs store back in the day! Haha the fakeout approaching zombie club foot brother scene is actually brilliant. Great review
Found this film as a teen in one of those generic 5 in 1 film compilation dvds. Fell in love with it right away. Despite the eensy teensy budget they obviously had, I think I can tell the writers and crew behind the film had a genuine passion for the project. Love how the zombies look and loved their rules of engagement. Just act cool and pretend they're normal and you're going to be OK maybe. Lock them in a room with a mirror where they're forced to confront their nature and watch them tear each other apart. Wouldn't mind a sequel.
This was a life changing movie for me. First non-studio movie I'd ever stumbled upon and needed to know everything about it which led me to b movie podcasts and I've been digging deeper into this rabbit hole for more than a decade now.
OMG!!! Mike, when you said you caught this on cable as a teen but didn't know the name I had to check my mirror to see if we were not the same person. I saw this once, and all I knew about it was the Garbage Man character. I admit freely it weirded me out all those years ago. My horror awakening only happened when Freddy hit the movie screens. I have been clicking on your vids for months now, but only ran across this film at this moment. Thanks for all the great reviews and horrible dad jokes... And "Christ, I'm that old, too."

Yeah I knew I sawed the ring before months later seven days ugly zombie ugly chic same movie damn kids with progeria or something acting
I found this gem on UA-cam. Another great review!
I'd like to cover Neon Maniacs one of these days...that's another gem I haven't seen in a long time.
I remember as a kid I had a really vivid nightmare that had zombies coming out of the TV. I didn't see this movie until I got a bit older and got pretty weirded out lol. I'm definitely gonna give this one another watch.
Can’t wait to see your take on this one. I’ll hold my comments until then.
I remember when USA used to show movies! Those were the days...
Late night with Rhonda Shear before home shopping network gig
USA USA UP All night weekends
As always you deliver the insight and gore of all the classics. I remember this awesome movie.
Useless trivia fact; the "random naked chick" that came out of the TV was played by Jennifer Miro, she was the lead singer and keyboard player from legendary first wave San Fransisco punk band, the Nuns
I did not know that.
@@TheHorrorGeek The Nuns did the early American punk classic "wild" and opened for the Sex Pistols during the infamous last-ever concert!
I still have this on VHS it has a cool double sided sleeve.
Fun fact: the line in Skyrim “I used to be an andventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee” is not referring to an actual arrow. It’s a marriage reference! Lol!
Hahaha!
I figured the box was going to say “FRA-GI-LE” on the top and we all know what’s inside. I was nicely surprised it wasn’t a lamp this time. HAHA 😂
Haha! Yeah, the items in the box are getting fancier....
Hell yeah-another oddball classic from the video library (Christ I’m old)-also I stole the poster which got me grounded 😂🇬🇧👍
A beautiful movie, with great commentary too!! This is an absolute gem!! Thank you, HORROR Geek!!
Zombies coming out of T.V.s? If that isn't a terrifying concept, I don't know what is. Can't wait til tomorrow to see this potentially novel idea be fully realized.
What kinds of concepts in horror movies creep you out the most?
Honestly, anything that puts people in really tight places freaks me out because I have pretty bad claustrophobia. So, parts of The Descent, Buried, etc.
@@TheHorrorGeekI'm exactly the same, the descent I won't watch. When I was younger I remember that people being buried alive in coffins was quite the horror trope In its day. I think there was a horror movie called buried alive, but it also happened in other horror movies to
@@neilold7291 Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) is in a movie about being buried alive.
@@seanrosenau2088 yes, there's a few if them knocking about. It seems to be a trope of all types of movies, probably because it's such a universal fear
@@TheHorrorGeek I guess you really loved the “House of the Blind” segment in *Tales From the Crypt (1972)*
Haven't watched this movie in years. I think about it now and again, but forgot the name. Thanks and super solid video as always
Another good one Mike. I look forward to Wednesday’s. When I saw the shack, you said the very thing I immediately thought about Mrs Voorhees. Or rather, her goddamn head. Cheers.
Congratulations Mike... 50k...awesome... you deserve it✌️
Thank you!
The parents didn't seem the least bit upset about the loss of their son. 😲
Not at all...but I mean, he wasn't the big college student majoring in Aerobics, so it was no big loss.
@@TheHorrorGeek Poor kid. Completely outshined by his sister and her leg warmers.
Watching public domain theater. Good Times.

Sewer horror and embrace my inner gore geek! This Film Rocks!!! 🎬
I’m your age and when I was a kid we had an old Emerson tube tv. When it broke we had to take the blow out tube down to the store and buy a new one. Remember tube tv’s and tube testers kids? Damn I’m old. Ancient technology before silicon chips.
When I was a wee Horror Geek, my grandfather had a TV repair shop. I used to go on calls with him all the time. Now you just throw a TV away when it stops working...we live in strange times. :-)
HAHAHA! Yes! Wednesday is upon us!
Great choice! And made it to 50K! Congrats brother. We’ll deserved
What up Baddog eagles fan here funny seeing you here cool
@@charlesqueen7008 I'm a HUGE horror film fan. Love this channel!
@@BaddogSports well I have to say you are a cool giants fan
Ah the benefits of having a housemate that worked in a video store. He brought this home one night and we had a good laugh.
Haha! I think pretty much everyone's first bedroom tv in our era was an Emerson. Although mine was a Capeheart or something like that. :p
Another fun fact. The actor Michael StMichaels IS... 'The Greasy Strangler.'
I still need to see that...
Take a shot of J&B every time there's a house establishing shot.😁 And congratulations on the 50K subs here Mike.☺👍
Thanks Chris! And please, think of your liver...
USA Saturday nightmares was the first time I heard of this gem…love it!
That and Up All Night really makes me nostalgic.
I suggest next time when there is a zombie apocalypse he uses the bow made by the company Bear.🏹🏹🏹
Congratulations Mike on your 50,000 subscribers! You are just wonderful and no matter what's going on in the world, I can always put on the hard geek and laugh my ass off! Bravo!
Horror geek, sorry!!
Thank you! and no worries...although I'm worried that whatever the hard geek covers probably gets demonetized on YT... :p
Definitely!! 😂👍
😅
Great Review, Mike! I'm gonna fire up my Blu-Ray "Terrorvision/Video Dead" double feature of this soon!
I like a lot of the ugly zombies and foggy zombie scenes! They look real creepy in the Emerson!
Low Budget Creepiness! I think this movie is from Ohio.
That "de-creased" line was pro-level punnery. I know I've asked you if you went to school for punnery - now I think you should *start* a school for it.
He majored in it in college.
There’s lots of parodies of that scene where the hot chick comes outta the tv. So yes this is a cult classic.
Do take out the booze for the house establishing shots. You’ll be dead drunk.
This movie is ridiculously retro. If someone sent me an old CRT tv in this day and age I’d throw it out no questions asked.
Dude. Stop trying to analyze it. Just watch it and have fun
DEEP LORE DEMANDS DEEP ANSWERS, MOVIE!
More seriously, though, the concept is good. Kinda like Waxworks 2, where you have all these different timescapes/dimensions/stories and access via curse.
Now I want a movie with nothing but house establishing shots.
I could make a supercut video....be careful what you wish for. :p
@@TheHorrorGeek I would look forward to it.LOL
I'm so happy you started including outtakes. I can't explain why I love them other than how much I relate when I try to film anything
I've spent time on TV an a lot of time on TV sets...and I never knew how hard it was to actually read off a teleprompter until I actually started doing it. People who do it live are legends. Can you imagine me on the news? The FCC would shut us down in 10 minutes. :p
@@TheHorrorGeek so which patreon level do we need to subscribe to get this to happen?
Very excited for this one. I recall it being pretty bad as a film, but likely to be comedy gold in your hands.
Classic ! I remember hiring this on VHS back in the day... Looking forward to this bad boy! 👍❤️
They show this movie on Comet TV every now and then. It's an odd gem.
Ha!ha!ha! Oh yeah! One of my serious fave.s from wayyy back . I saw this on late night cable around '90 or so then years .later got the sweet blu ray/dvd double feature ( Shout Factory ) with TERROR VISION ( a film i did ;t like 30+ years ago but when i watched it again i LOVED it!) . TVD is such a WEIRD fun oddball and original ( in my opinion ) zombie film . Cool thing is the dude that plays the 'Zombie Stardust" ( ha!ha!ha! ) zombie lives here in Spokane . I've talked to him a couple times ( online - go figure! ) . Really nice cool guy and i really wanna get my copy of the film signed by him one of these days . Great hilarious review of a way cool flick man! P,s, Mickey Rooney?! HA!HA!HA! Cheers Mike! Stay cool and take care! :)
That's awesome that Bowie zombie is a local...
Man i remember the video case for this mess lol. Never rented it. The opening B&W shot of the episode gave me WaxWork flashbacks , that's a classic flick i hope you eventually revue
I remember rotary landline phones.
I remember seeing this for the 1st time on Comet a few months ago. Loved it then and i still love it now
You're on in the background all day while i clean and cook and do whatever, and i have to tell you that you are hilarious and i love the subtle and the not so subtle comedy. You really have talent and my kids now say "christ im ollldd" randomly lol
Hahaha! Thank you! And I'm happy I'm influencing a whole new generation... :p
De-creased. Brilliant.

The "Hell Yeah!" gag gets funnier every time. If you are reading this and have not subscribed yet, what are you waiting for? I promise you, everything will come up Millhouse.
Hahaha!
here in brazil we had a show called "cine trash" and i was a kid in that time, i watch it alone and after the film end, i could not turn the tv off because i was afraid the zombies could grab me , so the next day my parents grounded me because i let the tv on until morning
I love the David Bowie Zombie that shows up in this!! Scary Monsters and Super creeps running amok!!!
Nope, got a DVD release can be easily found online.
I'd say it's relatively renowned within the horror community.
Ahhh, the smell of a fresh Horror Geek vid. Opening my kid’s 529 can wait…….
A fresh house establishing shot?
50,000 Biggies !!! Well Done Mike, the Horror Geek ..it's Well Deserved!! Keep 'em Coming ! Xx❤️👍❤️ xX

My dad use to own this movie on VHS. I took the tape and watched it.
yeah! another unseen Gem! my fav. is the woman turning around in the dryer. priceless.. oh an not to forget the 73 house Shots..
Love this movie ! the continuity with April's hair when she is on the phone with Jeff gets me every time lol
I missed that! I'm slipping. we haven't had a continuity is hard joke in awhile too...
I remember this! My dad had this in his vhs store back in the day! Haha the fakeout approaching zombie club foot brother scene is actually brilliant. Great review
Michael St. Michaels plays big Ronnie in The Greasy Strangler
I really need to see that movie.
I rented this movie at random around 1998, and it was mind blowing! It goes around the "So bad it's good" scale at least three times.
Love this movie, the horror section provided so many unknown classics imo.
Definitely.
Dude, I could get a PH.D breaking down your comedic editorial. Just hilarious.
4:40 -- Yeah! Pfffft! What kind of loser 30-year old would live with their parents?! **laughs nervously**
Haha! I did it too. :p I moved back at one point.
I would have loved a sequel to this back in the day.
I remember this one from browsing Palmer Video back in the 80’s.
Yeah, I was honestly convinced I'd dreamt this movie for YEARS. Was so happy when someone finally knew what I was talking about when describing it.
