  • I spent two hours railfanning at the Sounder station in Kent, WA (about 18 miles south of Seattle). I caught 8 trains in total, a mix of passenger trains, local freight jobs and through trains.
This is part 2 of 3.
My fourth train was Crew 8 coming off the Industrial Siding and heading south on Main 2. They are headed to Auburn Yard with a short cut of cars. They were seen in part 1, waiting on the siding for their turn. We'll see them later in this video as well.

Train #5 was an Amtrak Cascades southbound on Main 1, running at speed on the track right next me. They look and feel really fast when they're only 6 feet away from you!

Next up, Crew 8 returns from Auburn Yard, having dropped one hopper. They're running with well-worn caboose 12401 in the lead. The foreman rides point and gives me a wave as he passes. This job has a caboose because they run in reverse for long stretches. The horns on the caboose are really weenie sounding, though.
Train #6 was a short train of empty garbage containers northbound on Main 2. These came from the landfill at Roosevelt, WA and are headed back to either Seattle or Everett.

Train # 7 was the Vancouver, WA to Everett manifest freight running north on Main 2. I moved off the platform and onto one of the stairwells for a different view.

I find it funny that the caboose has a nice K3 horn on it, and yet the crew opts to use the brake line peanut whistle instead... probably a lot easier on the ears of the crew though. Nice series of videos!

We've got a couple of local jobs here in the Seattle area that use a caboose. And you see them on work trains here and there.

Cool to see a caboose bringing up the rear! Not often do you see that anymore these days.

Peanut whistle - good name for it. I figured you'd want to use the nice loud horn on the caboose, especially with all the pedestrians in Kent. Maybe the conductor didn't have ear plugs that day and went with the peanut whistle to save his ears...

Your lucky. I hung out in Skykomish for 4 hours and nothing came through...
