Abbey of the Dormition, Mount Zion Jerusalem
The legend holds that during Saint Helena's pilgrimage to the Holy Land between 326 and 328, she identified two spots on the Mount of Olives as being associated with Jesus' life - the place of His Ascension, and a grotto associated with His teaching of the Lord's Prayer - and that on her return to Rome she ordered the construction of two sanctuaries at these locations.
The monastic church- “the Dormition” is one of the most prominent churches in Jerusalem due to its size, beauty and location that overlooks the old city. The church was built on a plot which the German emperor Wilhelm the 2nd received from the Ottoman sultan during his visit to the Holy Land in 1898, and it was inaugurated in 1910. The emperor decided to establish here a large church that would demonstrate the strength of Germany, and the building does in fact give a feeling of a fortress.
The church stands out due to its round shape, unlike most of Jerusalem’s churches that are rectangular. The central building is round, as well as the wings and towers surrounding it. Also the cone-shaped dome has a form that is distinct from the other churches of Jerusalem. Another unique characteristic of the church is the integration of motifs from east and west- a massive neo-Romanesque building, which is similar to ancient cathedrals in Europe, combined with white and red stones that characterize the Mameluke architecture. The narrow alleys emphasize the vast dimensions of the church, which is 34 meters high- like a 12 story building. The church was established where, according to tradition, Miriam, mother of Jesus, fell to her death- sleep. The church’s name derives from this event- “The Dormition”, meaning “coma”.
The interior of the church is impressive, with a mosaic floor. The mosaic presents a Latin quotation of the Book of Psalms: “May the Lord bless you from Zion”- a verse referring to Mount Zion where the church stands. The mosaic also depicts the Ark of Noah that drifted on stormy waves. This is a common metaphor in Christianity, symbolizing the belief that only its followers will be saved from the Great Flood at the far distant future.
The church’s floor is covered by a large and round mosaic. The inner circle is comprised of three circles, with the Greek inscription “Agios”- meaning “saint” in Greek. The three circles symbolize the divinity, which sends tongues of fire to the four main prophets: Isaiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, who appear in the second circle. The Gospel is conveyed by them to the 12 prophets and four writers of the gospels, whose names are mentioned in the third circle and they are also depicted in the illustrations: the angle is Mathew, the eagle is John, the bull is Lucas and the lion is Mark. They were the ones who conveyed the Gospels to the whole world, which is symbolized by a zodiac.
The mosaic symbolizes the connection between, and the continuation from the bible- prophets to the apostles and four messengers of the Gospels. In the Apsis at the front of the church facing the east, stands the main altar of the church, with a magnificent mosaic presenting baby Jesus in the hands of his mother Miriam. Jesus holds an open book in which the following text is written in Greek: “I am the light of the world”. Below them stand the prophets who prophesized the coming of the Messiah, their heads surrounded by halos. The alcoves surrounding the hall are secondary altars which were donated by German Catholic communities.

I had a wonderful trip to Israel about 20 years ago. It remains vivid in my heart and I swam in the Dead Sea. Actually floated as you cannot actual swim due to the salt. Sadly, the sea is shrinking and the roads have cracked with large sink holes and no longer safe for tourist. Please put Israel and all the important historical areas on your bucket list. A once in a life time experience.
One other important factor is that in Luke's gospel of the Annunciation to Mary the Angel Gabriel greeted Her with this greeting" Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee" an important stated fact is that Mary IS FULL OF GRACE"
All Christians can be full of grace - the grace of God. Grace is simply unmerited favor of God. We don't earn grace; it's God's gift to all who trust Him for salvation. Read the Bible for yourself. Don't believe blindly without seeing what the truth is.

Im not trying to be rude or seem ignorant I understand you are not worshipping mary (many catholics have said they are not) but Dont you think it would be better to Hail Jesus or God? I do not think God likes that Mary is given such superior place that she even looks like shes getting more praise then jesus. The bible mentions nothing about hail mary anywhere and jesus died for us we can go directly to him to the Father in heaven. He is waiting for you to talk to him he is not some angry baby in his moms lap making her arm heavy, he is a Grown king, he was a grown man when he died and rose again. Mama Mary did not die because she was assumed into heaven. It is called Dormition Abbey. We visited the place in 2018.
That's a Catholic belief though. We, the Orthodox Christians, believe that the Theotokos did die and in three days she was resurrected by Her Son Jesus Christ! Anyway, Χριστός Ανέστη to all the people of the world and may everyone find the strength and the spiritual peace they're looking for!

Marcin milewski, can you show me a scripture on that. One that is as explicit as the ascending of Elijah, Enoch and Jesus. I seem to have missed it in scripture somewhere.
@@rbnmnt3341 The New Testament contains no explicit narrative about the death or dormition, nor of the Assumption of Mary, but several scriptural passages have been theologically interpreted to describe the ultimate fate in this and the afterworld of the Mother of Jesus.Various apocryphal documents do contain narrations of the event.

Actually this one of the most truthful answers I have got back. Because some have told me it is in scripture, albeit without providing a scripture. My point is catholicism is full of teachings that have no scriptural basis. The problem with that is that any religion or religious heretics can add or invent anything it/he pleases.

Demon Hunter Why do you pray for Mary? Do you mean you pray to Mary? If you mean the first, she does not need your prayers, she is in heaven. If you mean the second, Mary is not divine, she cannot answer your prayers. Although she was blessed among all women who ever lived. God chose her to give birth to His Son. Her body was flesh and she was not of the God Head, as Jesus was.
The difference between Jesus Christ and Mary is that He is God and she was a sinner saved by Him.
