I’m probably wrong but, A is real amp B is Fractal C is helix Seriously though, it’s almost as if you could do punch-ins within the same song of a good mix and not be able to notice! Sweet riffs Jon!
Very close! If not impossible to distinguish in the mix. They all sound incredible. For me, it all comes down to how easy or difficult it is to dial in a good sound.
A. is the JJ B. is the Axe FX C. is the Helix. I have the Pod Go so I'm pretty confident in C being the helix, but either way I think you've got a better sound out of that model than I ever have.
Yeah that was my guess. I've got a Pod HD500x and I had the kidney way back in the day and there's a certain chunky overtone to pick attack that I noticed in C that I get with my current pod and used to get with the old kidneys too.
In the mix, B felt like it had more oomph on the transients. Isolated I'm not so sure. Definitely more low mid on B. C had a weird upper mid drone that none of the others had. Guessing A: Fractal B: Amp C: Helix Aside from the drone, I thought A and C were very similar which makes sense if both are modeled on a 100w circuit.
My favorites would be, in order: C, A, B, though I would be perfectly pleased to play B or hear a record with that tone. C has everything B has plus a little more which, but they are all so nice that it somehow bumps it to first for me. I have Native and HX so I'd love a preset to purchase for this. Thanks! Guesses: A Fractal B Real C Helix
A: amp, B Fractal, C Helix. The distortion of A was a giveaway. The distortion of the other two were very consistent/symmetrical. And C was a very consistent polished sound, which I have come to associate with the Helix. I would have chosen B for a mix. A was too thin .
A: Axe FX, sounds good, a little bit smoother sounding than B. B: Real amp. To me it is like A but with more girth in the lows, punch in the mids, and more "open" airy/fizzy highs C: Helix. Sounds a bit dull and hollow, "plasticy", and is a bit fatiguing to listen to. Pretty confident but happy to be wrong :D!
Wow, they all sound amazing. With a bit of EQ tweak you can make them sound identical. By the way, as long as you have such nice riffs like these, it doesn’t really matter which is which😉
I think this helps to prove that it's the IR (speaker) that makes the biggest difference in tone. They all used the same IR...hence, they all sound pretty much the same. So it's not so much pickups or amps (as long as amps are in the same ballpark), but the speakers (IR). This is what Glen was trying to prove on his channel.
A - Fractal B - Helix C - JJ Friedman I thought the last one with more bass, more heavy, in my opinion, like a real amp… but all of them were quite similar! Great video as always!
This one is hard as well but I'm going with A - fractal B - Helix C - real amp A sounds darker to my ears, fractal usually has a darker character. B has more highs which most of the Helix models have and sounds more present. C is more full sounding to me
Very hard to tell... but my guess is A: Fractal B: Helix C: JJ All of them sounds awesome and i could use them all in a produktion when mixing for sure! As always, awesome content Jon!
Wow, this is so close, I have no idea listening on my TV. A and b sounded a little more clean cut so I will say Helix a Fractal b Jj c Main reason I think on c is there was one distortion part that sounded more amp like rather than generated, but I could have been fooled.
I'm listening through reference monitors, and I really can't tell when you switch from A to B to C. I don't know whether to be disappointed or encouraged...
Almost the same :) I liked A the best (but I really se the difference only on chugga chugga riff....) so this probably be the real amp A - AMP B - Axe Fx3 C- Helix
Impossible to tell but my guess is A Amp B Fractal C Helix Considering the real amp is not exactly what the digital ones are modeled after I guess A is the real amp, because that tone differs from b and c in the lower mid clarity and low end response. B and C lack a little bit of that super definition in the lower mids but have more low end response. I think in the mix it does not make enough difference to worry about it. Soloed I prefer B, but play me any of these recordings on its own and I will probably like it anyway
Wow, they are all super close and sound great! Your tones and riffs are always incredible! My guess … A=helix. B=JJ jr. C=fractal. B seems to have a little more action in the low end that makes me think it’s the real amp, but in the mix they are so close!
Very very similar. The only perceivable difference to me is the transients on palm mutes. Based on that, A is tightest / stiffest to me, which I guess is the Helyx. B and C are much closer; B a bit less 'bouncy' on the attacks than C. So I would say B = Fractal, C=Friedman..
I will say a:amp b:helix c:fractal but i'm not surprise if i'm wrong it's impossible, maybe something different with ear plugs in the iso tracks but the guitar is supposed to sound with other instrument so...
no idea wich one is wich, but A and C sounded so close to me. my quess is: A- axe-fx B- Helix C- Real deal owned helix lt and now I have Quad cortex and HX stomp. So I hope the B is real amp XD
I'm gonna say A is the real amp because to my ears it sounded the least harsh and most dynamic. B & C sounded very similar, but C sounded slightly warmer and sounded like it had a bit more aggressive power amp saturation, which tend to be a giveway for the Axe Fx. By process of elimination, this means B would be the Helix, but I could be all wrong.
York audio is now my favorite brand or IRs. I used to be a Ownhammer fan but it's way easier to dial the tone I want from York Audio than OH. I stil love OH when I record something on my computer but for live application, York are way ahead.
Late to the game, but locking in before checking results, anyway: A: Real For Fractal vs. Line 6, I don't have a good basis for this, but: B: Line 6 -- just a hint more mud than the other two, and for some reason I believe Fractal would nail it closer than Line 6, so: B: Fractal
In the mix, i couldnt tell any difference at all. Isolated, i liked A best. B seemed to have a little more bass. But to guess which is which...My guess is A is a modeler Fractal or Helix. B is a real amp.
B - AMP (fuller sound) A - axf iii (little darker om top) C - helix (little fizzy) The three sound almost the same, i don't know wich is wich, but asume the amp is the best sounding 😆👌🏻
The only thing I noticed was that A seemed the most "open" and B & C were more "muffled". I'd have to guess that A was the amp and B&C were the modelers, no clue which was which.
A - Helix B - Amp C - Axe FX Honestly though there aren't enough differences to be significant for my tastes. Any one of them would do. Can you confirm that you're using a hardware Helix? You mentioned that the firmware was up to date so I take that to mean a hardware Helix and not the plugin/native. I might finally pull the trigger on the Helix Native.
A sounds more like the amp in my opinion and judging by the sound I get out of it when I play it…. Although I can be wrong…. B and C are the digital platforms. The music is great as usual!!!
A Helix B JJjr C Axe fx They all sounded really good though. All very articulate. B just sounded the nicest. I’m probably going to be very embarrassed 😞☺️
I'm going to call it as A = Amp B = Fractal C = Helix I could really go either way on A and B, just following my gut there. C stands out a little bit more than the others. A seems maybe the slightest smidge thicker than B.
I can only give an order based on how I liked them: A, then C, lastly B. A has the most low-mid content of the three, but of course this means nothing. The difference between B and C was very very subtle.
Being a Helix user, I thought I would be able to at least tell which one is the Helix. But even with the actual amp being a different model, all 3 are basically indistinguishable. Well done on the tone matching!
Recordings and IRs are one thing. How do the fractal and helix sound through an actual mic'ed guitar cab with guitar speakers compared to the Friedman, same same? EDIT- also with room mic'ing. My point being- they all sound good recorded with IR's. Extremely hard to the tell the difference, especially if you are not fam with the amp in question. In the room with a real cab, with real guitar speakers, the modelers are easy to differentiate.
It is extremely close and I’m not listening in a critical environment, but at first blush I would say A is Fractal, B is real, and C is Helix. All sound great. A sounds like a Kemper to me
What's obvious is a) nobody in the comments can tell which is which really as they all disagree, and b) all three are perfectly usable tones that would be 100% interchangeable with each other in a mix. Do I care which is which? Not really.
Quite difficult to guess actually... "C" seems a bit different from the other two... can't wait to see which one is which. I also expect you will show all the dialing in details, they all sounds incredible considering there's no post-processing at all. Thanks so much Jon !
I'm actually gonna guess that A is the Helix, and that B is the amp and C is the AxeFX. I've never actually put in a guess on one of these, so... I could be wrong, specifically B and C might be swap A - Line 6 Helix B - Friedman J&J Jr C - Fractal Audio Engineering AxeFX III
I think A- fractal B- JJ just because it had less gain and that’s how my JJ sounds on the BE C- line6 it had more saturated gain than the rest and my hx stomp stuff sounds like that.
Going to go with A - Fractal, B - real amp, C - Helix. In the mix the differences really becomes barely noticeable though. Edit: And I was wrong lol. I mainly went by the fact that A and C sounded the most similar, especially in the high end, so I assumed they were both the modelers.
Before the reveal: C, B… A in order of preference. C and B we’re almost indistinguishable. All, though, were so close that a tick of EQ could be the difference.
Tried to do this justice by listening through my Presonus Audiobox iTwo interface and HP4 headphone amp, going into DT1990 headphones. To my ears, I *think* (but am not 100% sure) that B has some extra smoothing of the highs going on, which is characteristic of Fractal compared to other platforms, and that A has a slight bit of extra top end compared to the others. To be fair - unless I had listened critically, I don't know that I would've noticed this... So, that said, my guess is: A - REAL AMP, B - AXE FX III, C - HELIX.
I think A = Axe, B = Helix, and C = real. I prefer C, then A, then B. I'm a Helix owner fwiw.
2 роки тому+1
A : response felt too fast to be natural B : darker but nice harmonics C : artificial in the high end So I'd go B the real amp A maybe the axe FX since it seems to have better reviews than line 6? I don't know much about amp sims ^^'
B sounds like a Helix to me. Not sure about the other two, as with certain riffs I preferred A or C. C does sound different in the midrange than the other two, now I'm curious why :)
Jeez no matter what the results are the modelers are SO close that you could fool anyone especially in a mix! My guess is A: Real JJ B: axe Fx C: Helix
Ok ok ok... MOEILIJK (which is "hard" in Dutch, John knows)! But I think A is the real amp and is also the sound I like the most, B is the Fractal which came in second and had little less detail than A, C is the Helix and to me had the least detail of the three. I do think they all sounded great, and I hope I am wrong once again. I love to be wrong in these blind tests. Thanks for doing these and for sharing the tasteful playing Cheers!
Like many others on here, I think all 3 sounded great and I would be happy with any of them. I'm also happy with those riffs you were playing! I guess I'll go with A amp, B Axe FX, C Helix.
I’m probably wrong but,
A is real amp
B is Fractal
C is helix
Seriously though, it’s almost as if you could do punch-ins within the same song of a good mix and not be able to notice! Sweet riffs Jon!
My guess as well
Я тоже так думаю.
I'm not sure about B and C but A is a real amp for sure. To me all real amps give more actual note through the gain.
My guess as well... A sounded most dynamic and C the most compressed.
same
Very close! If not impossible to distinguish in the mix. They all sound incredible. For me, it all comes down to how easy or difficult it is to dial in a good sound.
plus dynamics
A: Helix (my favorite sounding, crisp and cutting)
B: Axe-FX
C: Real amp (a bit darker, had the most organic sound)
True. Helix always has a cut to their tone that works great in a mix. B is definitely Fractal, it has the signature Fractal dark low mid growl.
A. is the JJ
B. is the Axe FX
C. is the Helix.
I have the Pod Go so I'm pretty confident in C being the helix, but either way I think you've got a better sound out of that model than I ever have.

A. Fractal

I honestly dont really know because they are so dang close. It also sorta goes to show how powerful good IRs are too.
In the mix, B felt like it had more oomph on the transients. Isolated I'm not so sure. Definitely more low mid on B. C had a weird upper mid drone that none of the others had.
Guessing
A: Fractal

Wow, that is what i was going to say. My guess.
Exactly my thoughts as well.. we'll see soon I guess!
This was where i landed too!
A - Helix
B - Amp
C - Fractal
"A" was my favorite but they all sound so good. Your songs are always so cool and so well produced, I really enjoy listening to your music.
A - real amp
B - Helix
C - AxeFX
These are pure guesses. Nothing is really leading me to choose one or another for any specific reason.
Man, there is nothing in that, they are so similar. Here goes:
A - Amp
B - Helix
C - Fractal
A: Axe FX, sounds good, a little bit smoother sounding than B.
B: Real amp. To me it is like A but with more girth in the lows, punch in the mids, and more "open" airy/fizzy highs
C: Helix. Sounds a bit dull and hollow, "plasticy", and is a bit fatiguing to listen to.

great riff John as always
maybe you can record a video explaining how you make your recordings. showing the entire signal chain, DAW, plugins etc.
Yes yes yes!
I guess he will never show to us how it's made.
A Helix
B Real amp
C AxeFx III
I am not sure.
I don't know the reference amp
all sound very closer...excelent Tone skills!
A - Fractal
B - Helix
C - JJ Friedman
I thought the last one with more bass, more heavy, in my opinion, like a real amp… but all of them were quite similar! Great video as always!

A - amp

In two minds about A and B though.. Awesome tones overall and amazing playing!
C, real amp. A, axe fx. B, helix. All sounds solid! Tough to discern. Great vid! Good challenge!
Very hard to tell... but my guess is
A: Fractal
B: Helix
C: JJ
All of them sounds awesome and i could use them all in a produktion when mixing for sure! As always, awesome content Jon!
A -is fave and probably real amp.
B-sounded over processed, Helix.
C- axe fx.
Thanks for doing this!
Wow, this is so close, I have no idea listening on my TV.
A and b sounded a little more clean cut so I will say
Helix a
Fractal b
Jj c
Main reason I think on c is there was one distortion part that sounded more amp like rather than generated, but I could have been fooled.
Really a close call, I'll go with my gut feeling:
A Helix
B Real amp
C AxeFx III
Solid tones in all!
I'm listening through reference monitors, and I really can't tell when you switch from A to B to C. I don't know whether to be disappointed or encouraged...
A: AMP
B: Fractal
C: Helix
But all sound amazing
Almost the same :) I liked A the best (but I really se the difference only on chugga chugga riff....) so this probably be the real amp
A - AMP
B - Axe Fx3
C- Helix
A-JJ, B-Fractal, C-Helix. How they're tweaked has a huge influence on how they sound, but the fact that it's even a discussion speaks volumes.
Impossible to tell but my guess is
A Amp
B Fractal
C Helix
Considering the real amp is not exactly what the digital ones are modeled after I guess A is the real amp, because that tone differs from b and c in the lower mid clarity and low end response.
B and C lack a little bit of that super definition in the lower mids but have more low end response.

Not a clue which is which, they all sound good. But in order of my favourite, it was
1: A
2: B
3: C
Great comparison Jon, it’s that good that I can’t tell the difference. Yourself and Jonathan Cordy have the best Line 6 Helix content on UA-cam.
A- Helix
B- Fractal
C- Real Amp
I would be happy using any of these tones!
Wow very close imo. All sounded great. Awesome riffs, Jon. Pleasure to listen to.
My guesses:
A: real
B: axefx
C: helix
A-amp
B-Helix
C-Fractal
They all sound pretty good! Tough one!
I have no idea. They all sounded great. I'd be happy with any one.
no idea wich one is wich, but A and C sounded so close to me. my quess is:
A- axe-fx
B- Helix
C- Real deal
owned helix lt and now I have Quad cortex and HX stomp. So I hope the B is real amp XD
I'm gonna say A is the real amp because to my ears it sounded the least harsh and most dynamic. B: Line 6 -- just a hint more mud than the other two, and for some reason I believe Fractal would nail it closer than Line 6, so:
B: Fractal
So close! Here's a shot:
A: real amp
B: Helix
C: Axe-Fx
I can't tell which one is which at all, but I like A the most, C second, and B third.
A - Helix, B - Axe Fx, C - Friedman.
Hope I am right this time. 😅
God, I love this type of music! So enjoyable riffs, whew, maaan!!!
A. Helix
B. Fractal
C. Friedman
Thank you John
In the mix, i couldnt tell any difference at all. Isolated, i liked A best. B seemed to have a little more bass. But to guess which is which...My guess is A is a modeler Fractal or Helix. B is a real amp.
I changed my mind with each pass. Honestly, not a bloody clue :) A:Amp, B:Helix, C:Fractal.
A is the JJ, B is the Helix, C Fractal. All sounded great.
First off I'll go with favorites, A was my favorite with C being second and B being least though they all sounded good. B could be the amp.
B - AMP (fuller sound)
A - axf iii (little darker om top)
C - helix (little fizzy)
The three sound almost the same, i don't know wich is wich, but asume the amp is the best sounding 😆👌🏻
The only thing I noticed was that A seemed the most "open" and B & C were more "muffled". I'd have to guess that A was the amp and B&C were the modelers, no clue which was which.
"c" is the most muffled. I would say this is Helix
A Axe Fx III
B Helix
C Real Amp
This is a hard one. All sound really good! As always, great riffs and quality video.
Think B was the Fractal due to its thicker lower mids. But other than that.... everything else is pretty much identical. Great job as always
A - Helix
B - Amp
C - Axe FX
Honestly though there aren't enough differences to be significant for my tastes. Any one of them would do. Can you confirm that you're using a hardware Helix? You mentioned that the firmware was up to date so I take that to mean a hardware Helix and not the plugin/native. I might finally pull the trigger on the Helix Native.
Truly great jam for this , really dug it! And B is real
Guess: A=Amp B=Fractal C=Helix B&C modelers because I think I can hear the load box on the A, but I can hardy hear any difference
My gut feeling is B is the real amp, but no idea which way around I would put the other two!
A > C > B, but it's soooooo close.
I'm gonna guess A: amp, B: helix, C: fractal
A sounds more like the amp in my opinion and judging by the sound I get out of it when I play it…. Although I can be wrong…. B and C are the digital platforms.
The music is great as usual!!!
A Helix
B JJjr
C Axe fx
They all sounded really good though. All very articulate. B just sounded the nicest. I’m probably going to be very embarrassed 😞☺️
I'm going to call it as
A = Amp
B = Fractal
C = Helix
I could really go either way on A and B, just following my gut there. C stands out a little bit more than the others. A seems maybe the slightest smidge thicker than B.
I guess; A Axe, B amp, C Helix. And I liked C a little more :)

From sounding best to dynamically less rich for my taste . A > C > B
A is real amp
B is Fractal
C is helix
they all sound great as usual
A - Helix, B - Real Amp, C - Fractal
It is extremely close and I’m not listening in a critical environment, but at first blush I would say A is Fractal, B is real, and C is Helix. All sound great. A sounds like a Kemper to me
What's obvious is a) nobody in the comments can tell which is which really as they all disagree, and b) all three are perfectly usable tones that would be 100% interchangeable with each other in a mix. Do I care which is which? Not really.
А-Helix
B-Friedman
C-Fractal
Quite difficult to guess actually... "C" seems a bit different from the other two... can't wait to see which one is which. I also expect you will show all the dialing in details, they all sounds incredible considering there's no post-processing at all. Thanks so much Jon !
I'm actually gonna guess that A is the Helix, and that B is the amp and C is the AxeFX. I've never actually put in a guess on one of these, so... I could be wrong, specifically B and C might be swap
A - Line 6 Helix
B - Friedman J&J Jr
C - Fractal Audio Engineering AxeFX III
Guessing here: A Helix B Amp C Axe FXIII. A & C don't have the overtones that B does, that's why I'm going with B as Amp. I could be wrong :)
I think
A- fractal
B- JJ just because it had less gain and that’s how my JJ sounds on the BE
C- line6 it had more saturated gain than the rest and my hx stomp stuff sounds like that.
Going to go with A - Fractal, B - real amp, C - Helix. In the mix the differences really becomes barely noticeable though.

my preference:

Before the reveal: C, B… A in order of preference. C and B we’re almost indistinguishable. All, though, were so close that a tick of EQ could be the difference.
Tried to do this justice by listening through my Presonus Audiobox iTwo interface and HP4 headphone amp, going into DT1990 headphones. I think A was friedman, B and C were so close, i cant tell. Nicely done
Wow Close. I'd Like to hear A and C panned left and A and B panned right in that mix with the drums. Cool riff John.
C axe fx. B amp. A helix. All sound great though
woof. no idea.
I preferred A.
A - JJJr
B - Fractal
C - helix
I have no idea honestly... But I liked the B more, it was the most balanced to my ear!
Love the tone(s), sounds very DLR/Whitesnake-era Steve Vai.
I don’t have my headphones right now so my best guess will just be that I think C is the amp B is helix A is fractal
I think A = Axe, B = Helix, and C = real. I prefer C, then A, then B. I'm a Helix owner fwiw.
A : response felt too fast to be natural
B : darker but nice harmonics
C : artificial in the high end
So I'd go B the real amp
A maybe the axe FX since it seems to have better reviews than line 6? I don't know much about amp sims ^^'
B sounds like a Helix to me. Not sure about the other two, as with certain riffs I preferred A or C. C does sound different in the midrange than the other two, now I'm curious why :)
really great tones and i recon impossible to tell. kinda feel maybe helix A, fractal B, amp friedman C.
A fractal
B JJ
C helix
Also I’d love to know your helix settings for this one
B is the Friedman....but, where do I find the follow up? Time to go searching lol
Jeez no matter what the results are the modelers are SO close that you could fool anyone especially in a mix!
My guess is
A: Real JJ
B: axe Fx
C: Helix
Thanks for doing these and for sharing the tasteful playing
Cheers!
Like many others on here, I think all 3 sounded great and I would be happy with any of them. I'm also happy with those riffs you were playing!
I guess I'll go with A amp, B Axe FX, C Helix.
Wow, all sounded like the real deal. Awesome sounds and playing…no idea which is which..let’s go with
A fractal
B helix
C real amp
