"It occurred this was much bigger than just a weekend event. This was a sport." -Joe De Sena This isn't just a sport, this is a lifestyle. Every time I train for a Spartan it takes over my life. I am more focused on that than almost anything else in life. It motivates me to stay active and healthy. Without it, I lose motivation.
Dan, some racers bring packets of salt or mustard to combat cramping. Whatever you choose, make sure you also have plenty of electrolytes and food for the longer races.
Thank you! For the first time, I experienced massive cramping in both legs while running Monterey. I now fuel with electrolyte tablets and the gummy clif bar during my longer, 13+ mile training runs. Next time I will be better prepared and have the mustard packets on hand. AROO!
Adam Epps, I don't know if it's better, but less reps would be a start. The time it takes to complete 30 burpees along with the amount of energy spent is double jeopardy.
that kind of the point though, plus these guys are ridiculous athletes. they bust out 30 burpees in about a minute. I saw Robert K. in Miami fall from twister get passed by 4 people while doing burpees and still come back and get 1st with just 1 mile left of a sprint
Josh McNair I strongly agree for the spear throw. A 70 to 90 second penalty at the elite level (not to mention the serious aerobic/metabolic punishment) is disproportionate and overly punitive when compared to a 4 to 6 second hand-eye challenge (which is not at the core of the spartan race). It would be interesting if the first miss resulted in 10-15 Burpee's or you could elect to go "double or nothing" and throw a second time. If you make it, you are off and running if you don't, it's 20-30 burpee's. Might add a little drama.
I want these full productions again. The current ones are great too.
It's incredible to watch these guys, having run an Open heat. How they maintain throughout still escapes me.

Hobie call the coolest athlete ever!
Hobie high fiving fans at 2:01:39 is spectacular!
AROO!! Blue Mountain Spartans!!
I love how there's just as much attention for the female runners as there is for the males in this sport!
They love burpies so much that;s why they miss spears direct))))
I'd love to know if any of these elites ever suffer from cramping and if so, what do they do about it?

guy's i got second place
30 burpee penalty hurts the sport from being competitive in the leaders & will hurt the growth along with tv ratings!
you have a better suggestion?
