- Yes, I know I need to diet... sheesh that looks horrible. Oh, well. By request take the TBI cutaway and do some measuring with my Dakota Ultrasonic thickness gauge. different methods to calibrate and just how difficult some shapes and textured surfaces can be to measure.

Thanks for the demo Charlie, very educational 😊
Glad you like it. Thanks
👍😎
Great video Charlie.
Hey IMO if its within .010 thats close enough to warn you when youre getting to a reasonable limit.
Just my opinion of practical useage.😐
I bored a SBC once and on the race track it blew a nickel sized hole in the cylinder wall.... Which measured .060"... A thin void that was undetected...
Sleeved it.
I never had luck with sleeves. Thanks
Good stuff
Thanks
good added info
👍💪
Great video thank you.
Glad you like it. Thanks
Cool presentation, thanks.
Have you ever tried all purpose grease instead of your gel? I like it because it doesn't rust out what it touches and can be reused over and over. Just have to calibrate with it and at least it works for me.😎👍
I don't think I have. What I don't like about grease is it is like roofing tar....gets everywhere!

No that's silver antiseaze that does that. LOL 😂😁👍
Hello Charlie , I was wondering about mission imposible 318. Is the project still going on? thanks
D.V. and Andy have all the parts I worked on. I have not had an update. I have asked if I could help anymore. Thanks
Thanks Charlie. You are a good teacher. Have you seen the latest DV and Eric W. Videos?
I have. I like them both so I have no comment.
@@servediocylinderheads I understand for shure. I think the same.. DV invited him to his shop all expense paid.
@@dondotterer24 I don't see that happening. Eric has a family to support.
@@servediocylinderheads that's true
Great video Charlie. I have a PR8 I’ve had for years but haven’t used a lot because I was not very confident in the readings I have gotten! Is there anything different you would do on aluminum?
Aluminum needs to be calibrated for aluminum. It has a different ultrasonic speed. I go back and fourth between aluminum and iron alot so, I need to calibrate every time I change heads or intakes.
Charlie have you seen the new ultra sonics you can buy for 100 oe so dollars
I'm curious how accurate they might be
Mine was more than 10 x that, but that doesn't mean the cheap ones will not work. I have a cheapie somewhere. It was horrible.

If they can sell cell phones pretty cheap, the electronics in a sonic tester should be a reasonable price... But they don't sell many, do they?
You usually get what you pay for especially on equipment but I watched a documentary recently on the true cost of making some of these electronics now🤯it was dirt cheap! Like the cost of a new iPhone…downright upsetting to find out. Not upset at the poor Chinese people who slave away to make it either- THE LOGO MARKUP! 😖
@@MidnightOilsRestoration I agree, I would like to write that I never regretted buying high quality stuff. True, I did need to save up to get it!
@@servediocylinderheads I absolutely agree with you, buy quality-buy once!
So what do you think is a good rule to keep as far as thickness is concerned? 0.100?
Yes. Thanks
.125" between bowls
What sonic tester head is that?
Good question. 5 mhz, 9" shaft 1/4" diameter
When I bought it the engineer said it would do iron and aluminum. Thanks
