If you're excited to paint rocks, but you don't understand where to place shadows, double check if you can sketch the same rocks with a line art and indicate where every plane is. Masterful artists like Jordan can paint it right out of their head, but if you don't have this much experience and a solid grasp of perspective, it might be too hard.
Try sketching out the simplified rock forms on another layer on top of the silhouette, identify where your light is, then determine which planes are facing toward light and which are facing away from it in shadow. Just make sure not to rely on your line art to hold up the painting and turn it off or drastically drop its opacity as soon as possible. Hope this helps someone.

I've been feeling really down today, so I decided to try out doing art again after 2 years.. I thought maybe creating something would help me get rid of some brain fog and anxiousness that's been building up for a while, and your video tutorial was PERFECT!! It really helped encourage me to keep creating and feel better. Thank you so much for the video and I hope there's more to come!!!!

this is a really good video tutorial on painting rocks. I like how your voice over matches what is happening in the video. too often on tutorials by others their voice over precedes what is happening so if one if following along in real time with the painting what they are saying doesn't jive with what is happening on video. then you have to back up slow down replay and watch paintshop to see whats going on

@Jordan Grimmer thank you for the brush. When I use it, it seems to have quite a lot of specks of texture in the strokes, unlike what I see in your vid. Any idea why?

my problem is that I get bogged down by the complexity of photoshop, I have tried doing this kind of work in Artrage but it never turns out as good as something done in Adobe photoshop.

COOL ... my method is a little different.
    - I start with a silhouette,
    - I then use photobashing, masking and painting to complete the design.
I'm no professional painter, so this method works best for me

I use a Wacom One tablet, one of the cheapest ones you can buy. I think you can still purchase them now. You don't need an expensive tablet to do artwork.

No one addresses the most challenging part in my opinion, which is how to evaluate where to place the shadow and light areas reliably and consistently to give a convincing 3D looking effect and to make them look nice regularly
