This just popped up on my feed this morning and I needed this. My hubby's caregiver wants a journal for her 90 yr old mother. She is Native American and wants it natural, earth tones. I found a picture album that is hand made. I want to build on it with her favorite things. I need to see this video today. Thank you.
As a person who makes leather bound journals, and sells them, I really appreciate the fact that you don't take the journals apart! The tips for how to add things like tabs, or pockets, are great, and really good thinking! I like your ideas! ~Janet in Canada
I love these journals. A few years ago when I started making jj's, I bought a pocket size blank journal like this and made it my Mushroom forage journal. I filled it with a few pictures, dates, times, (secret) places where I find morels, spring ramps, chanterelles, chicken of the woods, maitake, berries, etc. I was able to sew some outside pages with a zigzag stich which gave it some extra interest. I love how you put the tabs in. I'd like to try this! Thank you so much for inspiration and sharing.
I went Morel mushroom hunting once and I loved it!! It's so cool that you will have this as something to look back on and give you happiness.
So cool! I recently found a leather bound journal at Goodwill - the kind with a leather wrap-around strap for a closure and brown kraft paper pages. I didn't want to take it all apart to give it that junk journal feel and this idea will really help. Thanks!
Genius idea!
I have 3 sons, six daughters, plus their significant others, 24 gkids (18 are boys 1yr to 27yrs.) You have solved my male room gifts plus my house spouse of 53 years is obsessed with FISHING. So his tags will have charms of his hooks and bobbles!
The fun is in putting everything together and finding materials to make the pages with.
Greetings from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I'm new to paper crafting and love this idea and can't wait to do it, Thank you! Enjoy your day 🥰
Again, you are so brilliant and artistically accomplished
😱😍 THESE TABS!!!! I seriously love this! Those premade Journals are MagNifiCent!
Been doing this for years now Liz. Mostly for myself and friends. It is so much easier than how you girls do it here on U-tube. Never have done a leather one. but have done a lot of just blank page type sketchbooks. I decorate the front and back cover. Put some pockets on the inside of the front and back covers. Do a bit of decorating on some pages and you have a very nice journal or commonplace book. I think these leather ones would be good for men. Thank you for sharing!!!
And that's why you are the Queen..... great idea thanks for sharing. I am spending the day with some friends on Saturday to finish up a couple of my journals and will use this method for one book and the tabs. Happy week to you my dear.
FABULOUS idea or I should say ideas!!!!! I am so glad everyone shares ideas so freely!!! Sometimes I go in my craft room and just sit and feel no creativity. I watch YT and get inspired by you lovely ladies that share ideas with the rest of us!!!!!!!
Love the cheer. But you make the most beautiful things
Love this idea. I have several journals I cannot bring myself to take apart . This is a great journal hack.
Thank You Mrs. Cog for this Brilliant Idea!
Too many books are So Nice as they are without deconstructing, this is a Wonderful idea!
Mrs Cogs, your journals are amazing. I love this little trick ad will be trying it in my next journal. TFS 🌸
Also, you could sew stitches to your decorative paper then glue directly onto the book pages if you want a sewn trim around your pages. This has given me so many WONDERFUL ideas. Thanks for sharing!
I have done this to even those little inspirational books and cards- i have added pockets and belly bands to add interest and texture - these make great gifts. TFS
What a fantastic idea. I was just making a planner journal for my daughter and was just gluing the lace directly to the tops and sides of the planner. This is a great way to sew lace and add with the extra paper tabs. A more finished look. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea.
This would also be a neat trick for an altered book as well!
what a great and doable idea.Thank you so much for sharing.
Very clever workaround! Love it!
What a genius you are. Perfect embellishments xx
Love this idea! I also love your postcard desktop. Thanks for posting.
Dear Mrs Cogs, this leatherjournals come from India. Two years ago I was there and visited a manufactory where they produced this books. Al lot of people work there and doing everything by hand. Just some machines are there, but the most part they are doing by hand... that is the reason why it is so cheap...
Susanne Müller how sad this is the way it is. Such detailed hands worked by people who don’t make what they deserve for it...
Yes. One of many reasons I do not shop at Hobby Lobby. Ever. Saving a few dollars at the expense of the lives of others is not worth it.
Dilemma: Don't buy work bought cheaply at the expense of a hard working people or shrug shoulders at how easily many workers could be thrown back into greater poverty. One could say:
tourists see the problem but still walk away
to point fingers in a superior way
when they are by then many miles away.
🤷🏻♀️
Yes, we get these lovely leather bound journals here. I have never visited a factory producing these but even the shopkeepers here jack up the prices manifold....... Sad.
Yes I’m from India and we get them cheap here too. But the sadder part is people want moleskin over these beautiful ones.
I love this! I have a huge leather book like that as my Grimoire. I'm going to do this!! Thank you.
I never see your videos anymore makes me sad. I have learned so much from you.
During the summer months, I am in the garden and greenhouse, as we grow a lot of our food. During the winter months I have more time for tutorials and crafty videos. :-)
Thank you very very much. I have one or two of these journals and this idea will definitely help me enjoying using them. 🌺👵🏼👍♥️🤩🙏🏼👌
Great idea. Thank you Mrs. Cog!

Super cute!!! Thanks for sharing!
This is a MOST excellent idea! Thank you for sharing! :)
So clever. Great idea.
This is great, I’ll definitely try this. Sometimes I don’t always want to see stitching on the other side of my pages but I like the look of stitching so I get a strip of card stock, layer fabrics or papers on it, sew many lines of stitching along it, then glue to the top, side or bottom of my page...I can get the effect that the piece has actually been stitched to the page and can add these embellishments once my pages become signatures 😀
What a great idea! Thank you so much!!!
Fabulous idea! I finished a journal before I did any stitching - just because I wanted to finally get it done! This lets me get some stitching done LOL! Those are fabulous results!11
Great idea! As I am watching you on my front porch, the wind is howling. You mentioned the wind as well!

Wonderful ideas thank you for sharing 😊
Awesome idea. I just recommended this to a first time journal maker I haven't done it myself yet, but you're so right about the sewimg1 in the signatures. Ant of the pockets can be sitched around before you glue them into your journal.
Happy journal making
Love your idea.

Thank you for your ideas, as always your talent is so fulfilling. Be blessed.
Such a great tip. Thanks so much for sharing it. It's a keeper
Seeing so many thumbs down makes me wonder why? It's a great idea for quick gifts and just gives extra appeal to a book already bound. Especially if you run out of time but wish to give someone a journal. It kind of reminds me of an altered book where the pages are there, just additions or subtractions to make it work.
This is awesome. Thank you. I love the embossing on the journals you have found. It looks amazing. 💜🐾🌻🐾💜
Great idea!
Great idea. TFS!
