It sounds like you may enjoy Ghostroots, by ‘Pemi Aguda. I LOVED it! It is a collection of short stories as well, from a Nigerian author. It is currently shortlisted for the National Book Award, but even aside from that, the stories were interesting and like you said, not horror for the sake of horror, but the horror around every day life.
i could not relate more to your watch later playlist comment LOL i also have so many videos i still need to watch but i am so happy to finally be sitting down & watching this video!! i wanna read intermezzo so bad but idk i feel like i’m waiting? for what? idk LOL also you’ve got me so so so curious about a sunny place for shady people! but i also feel like it’s gonna SCARE ME 😂
hahaha i’ve been trying to get caught up and then more fun vids get uploaded!! 😭 i can’t remember if you’ve read anything else by rooney? i feel like it’s such an anticipated read, esp if you liked her other stuff, that i get wanting to save it for the right moment or something i think enriquez is subtle enough that the stories wouldn’t be too scary!! i was able to read it before bed without any issues
better curation needs to happen for everything! need to get to Burnt Sugar! i've heard so many good things about it and you just made it jump up in my tbr!
yes it’s truly an art!! i think you’d really enjoy burnt sugar, i feel like it’s really underrated (i say even though it was on the booker shortlist lmao)
I always meant to read burnt sugar. And I felt the same way about Spoons and feel it’s not the type of essay book for me. Roxane Gay is such an interesting author and does such in depth studies!
spoons was just way too fragmentary - i would’ve loved to see some more fully realized essays from levy :( any recommendations for where to go next with roxane gay?
october was also a very weird reading month for me, read some good books but I was soooo stressed out about the books I was picking up. I think im having end of the year jitters 🤧 I read my first Mariana enriquez in September and I loved it!!! (it was things we lost in the fire) and I also noticed her excellent blend of real life horror with supernatural horror to make something truly spine-chilling 😳 🖤 and by the sounds of it I'll also love her newest release!
oh yeah i’m also feeling end of the year stress 😭 so many books so little time!! i would love to read mariana enriquez’s other collections, i was looking at her novel though and it’s like 800 pages 😳 i think you’ll definitely enjoy a sunny place for shady people!!
doesn’t help that i’m about 20 books behind my reading goal 😭 our share of night is huge!!!!!! i’ll be attempting to tackle it sometime in the coming weeks so we’ll see how it goes… my copy is about 600pages
love the shirt, and i have no allegiance to fall out boy :) i need to get to a sunny place for shady people. i'm not a horror person, and i'm not a short story person either, so yr review pleases/encourages me
i hardly ever do buddy reads so it was really cool to get your perspective in real time!! i had never used the storygraph feature either and really enjoyed that too
the fall out boy shirt is is a mega slay
did yours arrive???
@ yes LOL yesterday at like 5:00pm 😵💫

I’ve had the same experience with Rooney too - each one gets better

hehe thank you!! i’ll be so excited to hear your thoughts on the enriquez, she really did the impossible by making me like those 2 genres lol
I think I enjoyed Burnt Sugar a bit less than you did, but buddy reads always add something to the reading experience for me.
