You guys are so cute to watch. Your regular struggling with English for the proper word is fun to watch (I’m struggling with Spanish so I AM you!). You’re both gentle and encouraging with each other and the one who is being corrected always is glad to know the proper way. I love the interaction as a married man and woman work to improve not only their boat, but each other on a personal level. The love is very evident.
I’ve worked as a mechanic for several decades repairing both diesel and gasoline vehicles. I have never seen fuel tanks painted on the interior surfaces. This may be different in a marine application as they seem to be already painted. You both have done an incredible job removing the old diesel fuel and cleaning the tanks. Unless you have found several spots where the paint is no longer adhering I wouldn’t spend the huge amount of time it will take you to grind and repaint. Installing a few higher quality fuel filters would serve you better. Make sure they are readily accessible and change them within a few hours of initial start up. After that change your filters on a preventative maintenance program or when you suspect you may have taken on contaminated fuel. A water separator would also give you peace of mind. Enjoy watching your videos immensely and look forward to seeing your boat back out on the water again. Barry
One huge difference with marine tanks such as these is that they're integral. That is, the outer walls of the tanks is the hull of the vessel. Also, marine environments are among the most hostile. For these reasons, integral marine tanks are coated. Corrosion and leaks develop in the air gap. This can lead to messy and dangerous fuel leaks, salt water ingress (and the resulting contamination), fuel egress (a.k.a. fuel spill, complete with hefty fines), and structural damage and loss of hull integrity.
I agree, you need good filters and biocide to keep diesel bug away anyway. Those filters will be able to filter paint flakes just fine. If the paint ablades away in the coming years you've got diesel in contact with steel, which is no issue at all.
I was thinking the same thing as GITNADOIX and I have experience as a fisherman in Alaska and the B.C. coasts. I would have just scrapped the loose paint off and then installed duel filters that could be switched back and forth. The only reason there is corrosion is because the boat was motionless on the "hard". If you keep the it in the water, the action of the waves sloshing the diesel around will keep rust and corrosion from getting started......IMHO
I am very impressed with this young couple. They are diligent, safety conscious and they hire experts when needed. This old guy wishes them the very best and am looking forward to seeing the end result.
It's actually a good thing that the fuel tank was sitting full, keeps the corrosion to a minimum especially with diesel. If it was empty for the last two decades it may have been really rusty. Big progress!
@@OddLifeCrafting Now Biobor or similar biocide, when you refill the tanks. Keeping a stock on hand. Fuel polishing system, with loads of spare filters. Good to go. Cheers
exactly correct. air expands and contracts with the changes in barometric pressure, fuel expands and contracts with temperature changes; outside air has humidity. A full tank, has less air, hence less air exchange during barometric changes; less air exchange with outside results in less moisture condensing in tank. A pressed up tank is good until the fuel expands; overflow will happen so, on ships, we typically never go over 95% capacity full.
I'm watching your story from both ends, now. Cleaning those tanks, is hard, dirty work! I'm glad you paid attention to this detail and invested the time in it. You'll have a wonderful floating home for the rest of your life! Thank you so much for sharing!
Always after watching your channel I appreciate how kind and respectful you two are toward one another, stay in love you are such a wonderful couple. Great video, thank you.
There must be very few people in the world that could make cleaning of a diesel tank fun to watch. Congratulations on a fantastic job well done. It was both educational and entertaining. All the best from Singapore.

Duka, I think the tank is good. The rough surface is something you find in these tanks and the color is good. there is no visible rust and it looks to be sound. Keep up the good work!
Good point guys. The tanks look fine. On the rigs and ships the tanks aren’t painted generally as the diesel will not rust them. The main part that would get some rust is the tank top where there is an air gap. Personally I would not paint the tanks, just clean them really good as you guys have done and have 2 pre-filters (raycor or Baldwin water trap type in parallel so that you can have 1 online and 1 on standby).

i recently cleaned my boats 40 year old diesel tank. so much dirt and mud! its called the Dieselpest (bacteria that slowly dissolves the diesel). Be sure to only use high quality diesel which has no bio/organic diesel parts in it. or always add some additives in regions where you cant get this quality diesel (e.g. from Liqui Moly). I was told that then you wont ever have to deal with problem again. Regards Christoph
Odd Life Crafting To bad!!! Sorry you have to do all the work. If you must coat the outside of the tank for rust, once I coated a gas tank with the epoxy used to coat the bottoms of airboats. It extended the tank life many years for cheep! Hang in there!
Thanks for sharing, must feel good to be able to get some progress on the boat that you can see and say yes we did this and now it's a step closer to the water.
When gasoline goes bad it turns into a dark yellow lacquer thinner basically like a super strong solvent. I may not be 100% correct but with diesel it doesn't degrade and turn into a different chemical, the main reason it looks so dark and cruddy is due to microbes that are naturally occurring in the fuel, its the existence of the microbes that causes the sludge buildup. The biggest issue with diesel that's been sitting in a container is water build up in the tank, not maritime specific, engineers have mitigated that issue by adding water separators to the fuel system(I believe usually located right near the fuel filters)
Absolutely no need to paint the interior of the tanks. You've removed the algae and sediment. That's all that's required. Additional coatings are optional. One of he biggest benefits from the tank cleaning is you can now use an algaecide when you fill the tanks. Before, you'd go through like a million fuel filters before the algae was generally gone.
Then deal with the minor areas of rust in a cursory/expeditious fashion and move on. No judge will be inspecting the interior of your fuel tanks and that part of the hull will outlast both of you.
Good job! I am a licensed marine ship's Chief Engineer. Make sure you use good gasket oil resistant material on those tank covers when you put back in place. From what I see, the boat is very well constructed. I have a Hans Christian 39 Pilot House built in Taiwan 1982, my fuel tanks are not as good. When you fill your tanks with fuel, consider adding a diesel biocide treatment regularly; to prevent the growth of fungus and bacteria that leaves black slime gunk which blocks filters.
Great work guys Huge tanks Good design This is the most important job you can do on a boat . Really good work we love your enthusiasm . Those tanks are in good condition great work Nice to watch It’s good to see an old boat coming back to the world .

Be sure to only use high quality diesel which has no bio/organic diesel parts in it. or always add some additives in regions where you cant get this quality diesel (e.g. from Liqui Moly). I was told that then you wont ever have to deal with problem again. Regards Christoph
Thanks for the tip. Actually the former owner had put some anti fungus in it and it wasn’t that bad. Hehe
What a mission! Nice one. It will be worth it in the end. You're getting closer every day- the dream is real.
👫🧼⛵️💕
salut, très bien l'idée de recyclé le diesel et s’être protégé des émanations de l’éthanol, gros travail de nettoyage.
⛵️💕merci
Wow you guys are doing it All right!! Will be a beautiful reliable floating home when your done! Keep up the great work.
⛵️💕
Date someone who looks at you as Roberta looks to Duca!
😍👫
I was thinking the same thing! It's as obvious as the sky is blue how absolutely in love she is with Duca and is a beautiful thing to see!
I agree it warms my heart watching them.
👫💕
💕💕
Gee guys it's wonderful to watch use and putting ur heart into the boat the vlog says it all ❤️🏴
👫⛵️🎥💕
Don’t do it no sanding and painting!!!
It is fine!!! Leave it alone!!! It is clean!!!
The paint is fine
There are some small spots of rust 😔
Odd Life Crafting To bad!!! Sorry you have to do all the work. If you must coat the outside of the tank for rust, once I coated a gas tank with the epoxy used to coat the bottoms of airboats. It extended the tank life many years for cheep! Hang in there!
The idea is to use phenol epoxy. We hope it will be okay
Thanks for sharing, must feel good to be able to get some progress on the boat that you can see and say yes we did this and now it's a step closer to the water.
👫⛵️💕🌍
So does the diesel provide ballast or is there ballast below the tank?
It also provides. But there is a ballast below it as well
You two are really troopers...great job and can't wait to see it completed.
⛵️🌍💕
>>>>>REPLACE THOSE GASKETS!!!!
👍🏻👍🏻
I’m so glad this feed made its way to Melbourne Australia. You two are fantastic.
💕💕 🇦🇺
I can't imagine how bad that diesel fuel smelled. I cleaned a gas tank on my 79 Mustang and it had sat for 15 years and the gas was BAD!!
Hehe. The ethanol smell was worse than the diesel actually.
👍🏻👍🏻
I so look forward to Mondays!! Another informative and well thought out video. You are really taking the time to do the job right!!
Thanks for your feedback, Jared. Have a great week
Unfortunately there a few rusted spots 😔
Then deal with the minor areas of rust in a cursory/expeditious fashion and move on. No judge will be inspecting the interior of your fuel tanks and that part of the hull will outlast both of you.
Great work you two getting there and looking Awesome as well.
Thanks 👫💕
Não é pouco trabalho não😱mas vocês dão um banho💪👌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😘
Hehe.

Thanks for the tips
Surely getting an an electric screw driver with that amount of screw for the oil area alone is already worth it!!!
We were anxious to use our new tool. Hehe
Hi you two! Fast becoming my favourite sailing channel. You two are great together, your boat is just gorgeous. Keep up the good work and vids.
💕💕
😂👍 with that toothbrush you remind me of Bubba and Forrest Gump when they were cleaning the tile floors with a toothbrush
😂😂😂😂
You are both such an inspiration.. really looking forward to all the episodes, and then the finished boat! Very best wishes from the UK x
👫💕💕💕 greetings from Brazil
We need to get you some Fuel Right - it’s designed to clean your tank and fuel.
👍🏻👍🏻 I’m not sure we have it here in Brazil
That was really really a lot of small space work ! Roberta it is good you are so tiny to reach down there! You did an awesome job!
Thanks, Vivian 💕🧼
@@OddLifeCrafting you guys are truly welcome!
