I bought the Glarry GTL solid body in see through blonde.
Glarry didn't charge any taxes, so I'm afraid I'll go to jail for that. The UPS delivery driver stepped through the thin cardboard, damaging the guitar. Glarry offered a replacement or credit, but I didn't want to deal with a return.
The guitar was completely unplayable as the fret sprout was extremely bad. Some frets weren't even seated completely, and needed hammering. The neck wasn't fully sanded at the factory, and looked warped.
I lightly sanded the neck smoother.
Filed the nut properly. (huge difference)
After extensive fretwork, alignment, and intonation it was playable. Changed strings and polished the frets.
*Now it's a Telecaster. But Glarry didn't make it, they just provided me with the parts.*
The problem with this guitars, is that the price attracts the wrong customers. Someone who wants to learn guitar and does not know how to resolve these minor issues may feel discouraged when they have problems fighting against the guitar, even without knowing they are. For someone Learning to work on guitars is ok though.
I'm so glad I bought this for Christmas. Can't wait for it to arrive, its amazing that a guitar this nice exists at such a budget price point.

I have this exact same model, bought, as you rightly said, as a project guitar. I had some of the same issues ie the neck tilting forward, and fixed with a shim.
I kinda knew it would need work, so I was prepared for that. I'm even thinking of making a video!

i got one a few months ago , i also had to shim the neck pocket , i also put a bone nut in , and changed the bridge to a brass 3 saddle ,
bit of a set up and intonate , bit of 0000 wire wool on back of the neck , now its smooth as silk , i wont change the pups as they are good .
i also like that it has a thicker c shape neck , and i like to practice unplugged , and i find as its semi hollow it makes good for that ,
over all , if you do the work its great , my go to guitar now

Colins certainly sounded better than the one they sent me, but my neck angle wassnt an issue, another example of the hit and miss nature of these cheaper guitars!

Very impressed by the sound of that guitar for the price. My first electric was a cheap tele knock off not dissimilar to this but it sounded far worse. Definitely looks like a good upgrade platform
I think the problem with these guitars isn’t that people like you or I who are looking for something cheap to fix up and upgrade buy them. It’s that the beginners getting their first guitar will get a terrible experience and won’t know why it’s terrible or how to fix it. Which is why I always tell people who ask ‘what guitar I should buy my kid’ to buy a Squire.
I am a beginner, and since I watched a number of videos, I knew that there would be issues, and how to address them.

I found the same guitar, same color, locally for 60 U.S. dollars. To me, it's gorgeous. And of course the owner played it and played it well.
The store owner said his "technician" did setup. Strange, he avoided the word luthier.
With your great video I can re-examine the guitar and know if good work has been done. Especially shimming the bridge.

How did that guitar came frighteningly close to the Jumpin Jack Flash tone is enough to convince me to try this out!
I was a single thought process away from buying and assembling a kit similar (from a more local brand) (also a kit) about 2 years back, before I realized that if I fucked it up, I would never tell because I had never played a guitar before.
I wanna say 3 months later the thought reinstalled itself in my head and my dad continuously said “no” to it for one reason or the other.
Seeing this has made me really want to pull the trigger on buying it for no reason other than I can figure out how to clean up others mistakes.
Hell, new strings and a setup are at LEAST half the fun of New Guitar Day...
You should paint the headstock red to match the body.
it appears that not only is the pickguard way to short but the control cavity was routed to far forward . you end up with that huge gap
Yes I noticed that as well...I would not be able to live with it like that, but fortunately I quite enjoy cutting a custom pickguard so as Colin says, that's part of the fun of it. Still, that is a glaring cosmetic flaw.
I recently fixed a friends squier telecaster with a similar bridge. Did you have any trouble with the intonation of the low E string? Because it wouldn’t stay in pitch even with doing a standard intonation process.
Colin, I may have misheard but does the rear pick up plate have the option to "Top load" the strings as well as through the body? Best, Pete.

I'm a sucker for Teles; I love simple form factor and sweet tones I get out my Mexican Butterscotch. One thing I want to do is sand of that plastic- like coating they put on the neck. I don't know what stuff is, but it keep my fret hand from smoothly sliding along the neck; give me some satin finish.
I have a rare double bound 98 tele. Would love to have an affordable back up.
cheap guitars like this can allow for some fun projects where you can do stupid things. Like my es-335 clone I bought from Guitar Fetish for 159$, being a classic semi hollow shape the only logical conclusion was to throw a set of used Seymour Duncan Blackwinters with push pull pots, and top it off with a Floyd rose FXR. This is the joy of cheap guitars, though I must say tough the es-335 clone was obviously much higher quality than the price I bought it. If you're willing to do the work yourself keeping your eye out for clearance out b stock guitars can be a great way to get something fun that you feel no guilt tearing into.

As something to test luthery skills on and as a decent base for a mod platform - these seem to fit the bill.
It looks pretty darn good in that trans red - but the pickguard looking short bugs me.
That bridge with the brass saddles actually looks OK - better than OK - I wouldn't know what I'd even replace that with as it seems better than the "traditional" 3-spring bridges.
I'm looking at it thinking how it might sound with a HB-sized P90 in the neck position and some kind or quality single coil in the bridge, locking tuners, Tusq nut, maybe upgraded electronics and a full setup.
I have a Donner thinline I got a while ago that I put a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat in and that pickup sounds great. If you wanna go for humbucker sized P90s I'd definitely suggest giving that one a look.

being more appealing to homebrew guitar fettlers is a "feature" shared by second hand instruments too, which i recommend 10x over paying for yet another brand new low end guitar made from virgin materials with unverifiable ethics of sustainability and all the transportation that comes with it. Glarry are providing very good value here, but an old pawn shop guitar will serve anyone just as well and is likely to be better quality.
(plus, buying local supports local economies)

Hey Colin, huge fan. I'm just curious, besides cleaner, tuners, soldering stuff, what are some essentials for a beginner luthier. And of course, how do we keep it affordable
My Glarry bass arrived with a fretboard so dry it was grey, like fully grey. I used some guitar fretboard oil to try to restore the fretboard. Mistake. The Glarry fretboard is not real wood, it is a "wood product" some type of wood fiber glued together. When I applied the oil in the normal and standard way, the frets popped loose. Holy Sh!t this caused me so much trouble. This ultimately ended up requiring 3 full fret jobs. I literally have over 100 hours of work into the Glarry bass, and it's action is still so high it is painful to play for more than 15 minutes... I've shimmed the neck in every direction, trying to lower the action, and I cannot get the action into an even reasonable height without getting overwhelming fret buzz. I've left it with the action carple tunnely high so you can get a note out of it that doesn't choke off with fret buzz.
Oh yeah, the truss rod is adjusted to its maximum range, and there is still a J hook in the neck, I cannot even approach slight relief, let alone a straight neck. The neck pocket is a nonstandard size so I cannot order a replacement neck... I did make a bone nut with low string height to try to take some of the height out of the strings from the J curve, but it didn't really do anything to affect the playability.
The Glarry Jbass is one of the worst purchases of my long life, seriously. It was a gift, arrived two weeks before Christmas, and there was no time to ship it back and try to get another one. Granted, I developed some unwanted lutherie skills, learned how odious a full fret job is, especially when the frets randomly come loose, even after being cyanoacrylated into place, several times. And I further learned how 3 full fretjobs on the same instrument is more than 3 times as odious.
And even with all that said, I'd like to put better J bass pickups in this piece of carp, but I cannot summon the will to put more money and work into something that should have ended up in a dumpster to begin with. But if anyone knows of a screaming deal on good sounding Jazz Bass pickups that will improve this cursed bass's tone, please let me know? Oh yeah, I think the pickup cavities route is non-standard sized, as the Glarry pickups are a nonstandard size... and I don't have a router any more... I do have a hammer and chisel though, and wouldn't mind getting some Glarry frustration out on this hunk... so try me!
Thinlines were chamberes because at the time there was a sudden and severe shortage of light hardwood. See 5wattworld if you have trouble believing a voice from the wilderness.
The Donner poplar Thinline isn't particularly lighter than an alder Fender, this is basswood, softer but lighter than poplar
Still seems like a hell of a steal.
Guitars up for review should always be played standing up (with a strap). The biggest issue (for me anyway) is going to be head heaviness. A partially hollow basswood body is going to be a pain in the butt to play because you're going to have to hold the neck up while simultaneously trying to play it. There must be a hundred reviews of the Glarry Teles on youtube, and nobody addresses this issue. Guitars can be too lightweight. This one, I suspect, is one of them. Reviewed guitars should always be weighed too.

Maybe one day I will do some video reviews (I have done written ones), everybody who knows me says I should. But I'm in no hurry.
Imagine being a beginner, picking this up, playing it for a few years, and then thinking it is normal to have SRV-esque action and bad intonation at the bridge. Still impressive they managed to produe a thinline at this price though.

I appreciate your expertise and evaluations, but I would think that someone buying this guitar would not have all of the equipment that you have. How about just going straight into a cheap amp?

I instead like to take the time to showcase the ways to set up and use equipment that makes them sound their best, that gives the audience an understanding of the equipment's potential and what they can expect to do to achieve it.

It surely is a great guitar with some awesome features for the money. But there is almost no way the rosewood on such a cheap guitar was legally harvested.
I'm by no means against affordable guitars. I just can't understand how a company could possibly source legally cut exotic wood for next to nothing. Same with Koa which is highly protected and therefore super rare and crazy expensive and yet some companies manufacture thousands of sub 500€ guitars with Koa tops every year.
oh it's NOT rosewood. It looks to be an entirely different species stained dark, it has none of the physical properties I'd associate with rosewood or its relatives.
You'll find that these cheap instruments are made from cheaper materials, the names given to those materials on the website only refer to the 'appearance', not the actual material.

That's very misleading at the very least.
Sure, dark stained cheaper wood has been used before (I have even seen stained plywood), but I'm still wondering how much illegally cut wood is being turned into guitars evey year.
I don't understand why companies aren't just honest about the fact that you can't really expect to find any exotic wood on cheap instruments. Fender's use of roasted maple (love it or hate it) was at least an attempt to find a more sustainable alternative.
I had to shim the neck on both my Glarry guitars,they wouldn't be good for beginners,too many things to fix to make play well.so if your a new player,I would not purchase a Glarry,unless your going to pay for a set up.

I bought one of these. It was the slowest neck I ever played and no matter what I did to it, it just wouldn't get any better. I sold it.
