    I watched this for the linoleum, but the brainstorming process you taught at the beginning was so helpful. It seems so obvious, but it never occurred to me to do mind maps with multiple words, and just the idea of going beyond the obvious.

    This is such a great video. At the beginning of my art endeavours a few years ago, I began with printmaking. I had different art intentions then - more like, I struggled with the idea of making one-off pieces, so figured printmaking was a good plan. I used to do more graphics-based stuff, but now I'm massively into painting portraits. However, this video has really inspired me to take my current artistic skills to a lino block, as my art tastes have matured... I saw that Prof Lieu wasn't a fan of the wobbly lino, which is complete understandable. I used to buy the lino pieces and mount them on wood blocks I had lying around the garden from old building projects. Off-cuts of MDF or thick ply, for example. Any wood with a smooth surface. I found my own mounted linoleum worked really well, so not sure if that's something you would recommend, or if anyone wanted to try, if the ready-made lino blocks were out of budget. BTW, I totally understand the principle of eliminating parts of the block, but my heart aches at the thought of doing it! Thank you 🙏🏽

    wow. That was super satisfying and informative. The WHOLE process, from discussing the theme to the end. Even the mistakes were important to learn how to avoid them and correct them. I'm going back to linoleum just to try it again. Truly excellent tutorial. It takes a lot to keep me watching for an hour!!

      Oh, so much this with such a similar shape. I have not watched to the end yet though! I would have the hope towering over the disaster. And used the indefinite perspective grid formed by the roads between where the buildings were. So great to watch this brain storming, made me realise how much I miss working alongside other artists. Thanks Art Prof for this insight. I am ok with process but very bad with ideas these days from nearly six years mainly isolated. I had great fun with photography and bees and plants last summer, but they are not what I want to draw or paint or make.

      I know that Blick sells a "starter pack" of 8 colors, but IMO all you really need is the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) plus black and white. I personally like having a brown like burnt siena or burnt umber. For red cadmium red is good, hansa yellow, and then ultramarine blue is good too to get you started. Good luck!

    Thanks for the earlier response. I use a mix of ink drawings, oil lino prints and watercolor. I have a question regarding paper, especially keeping prints vibrant and colorful. 1. Do prints need any special coating on them for protection, I know that sometimes people use wax over watercolor s a protective coating but it leaves a heavy sheen 2. Which paper is preferable unsized paper or sized paper? It is my understanding that "slack sized" paper is best such as BFK but these are not readily accessible. Would you say that Cartridge Paper(labeled as acceptable for inks- Daler rowney), Sketch Paper (Stratmore Sketch), Rhodia (paper pads), Watercolor (Canson XL) is satisfactory for the purpose. Does the absorption of the inks over time into the paper mean that the colors become less vibrant? Would a mixed media paper be more suitable and would have any recommendations that could be used for the mediums used above?

      I don't think that I am a complete expert on the matter, but I can say that Canson watercolor & mixed media paper works wonderfully! Also any printmaking paper pads tend to be great. This was great!! I want to try the lino block. I did my first print ever on a speedball rubber block. I found it difficult.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  4 роки тому +1

      Lino block is great because the surface is so sturdy, makes for really consistent prints. While the rubber is softer, sometimes it can actually be tougher to carve because it's not as rigid! Although you might have also had a rubber block that wasn't good quality, some are really poorly made! Thank you for this video! I was wondering: why isn't masking off the areas to put on different colors to have all at once an option, instead of carving away before each color change? It seems like if everything carved has an outline, and it all lines up on the registration, why not just have all the color there for a single pass all at once? I've never done this type of art before, so I literally know nothing about block printing other than what you've just shown us. I was just curious. I love how you go into detail and really appreciate your teaching method!

    • @artprof
      @artprof  Рік тому

      You could, but it would be a big paint in the butt! Even the smallest breyer would have difficulty targeting the areas, and especially if you have a detailed print it’s even harder. Compared to masking off areas, this technique is much faster and gets accurate results. -Prof Lieu

    I'd like to use this technique but I can't find linoleum blocks anywhere!! However there are linoleum sheets that are about 3cm thick. Can I use those for this process? They're ochre sheets that feel rubbery to the touch..

    • @artprof
      @artprof  6 років тому +2

      Yes, those will work fine! I would say just try not to wash it all the time, the water makes the linoleum sheet warp and then it's tricky to print!

    This video covers a lot of things that don't normally get mentioned, in particular in regard to the artistic process. It slightly irritates me that the teacher is so untidy - loads of lino slivers all over her desk right where she is printing; no wonder bits of lino are present in the inked block. However, that is just a slight niggle; I learnt a lot from this video. Thanks.
