Nice race and interesting to see a different opponent! I have to admit though, I do like the chatting with Shen during races. SmallAnt muting himself for most of the video works for compilations, but does detract slightly from the entertainment of a full race, I feel. Would be cool to see a three-way race between all of you, although without speedups.
@@T3Draco Well to be fair, Shen always does that in the call, most of it anyway. Smant is more comfortable with muting, which is fine, but it does makes this video much worse in comparison. Limits the amount of Streamers interacting with each other.

With randomized maps, I think randomized move lists might have been a bridge too far for me. I would want some ability to strategize with a known quantity.
I kinda of hope one day these map randomizers have all 8 gyms at the mall its highly unlikely but the mall does have 10 warps but if I'm wrong then shame cause would be funny if that ever happened if possible (cause I can't remember atm if there 4 or 5 floors actually)
I wouldn't really have thought to randomize pokemon because part of the appeal seems to me to apply your game knowledge to know where pokemon or other important things are. oh, this is the route where I can find abra to teleport, or an hm, etc. also really like the presentation of both players together, see exactly where they are. and yeah, if you hadn't played your own music, the sped up game music might have made this unwatchable for me Yeah! I remember picking up the sacred ash in soulsilver and being so mad when I found out you couldn't use it in battle. I suppose they thought the full party max revive was too good, since you can't buy max revives either

What you describe in your first sentence is actually the reasons Chrism and Shen do randomizer. Take the speedrun for Gen1: It is mapped and routed to a point where World Records basically come down to catch-luck, DSum skill/luck and saving as much frames as you humanly can. It is super cool to see in perfection, but for runners, it can become rather boring, because you literally know everything about that game. But if you play it as a randomizer and throw in a certain challenge or game-mode (for example Battleships or Triple Bingo), it suddenly becomes so much more exciting - but you still need to have a good amount of game knowledge and the skill to adapt to the situation at hand
I liked the addition of randomising the pokemon but the sets and abilities is definitely overkill. It defeats the whole point of getting a cool mon you wouldn't usually get in a play through.
This was fun, although it wasn't that close in the end. You wouldn't have been able to beat all of E4 and champion with just Cacturne, so the early catches of Smallant were pretty big ones.
I’m pretty sure that Ant pulled an illegal move in the speed run. I don’t think there’s technically a time against this, but he did all 8 gym leaders, beat the first two Elite Four members, then beat Glacia and reset afterwards. He then went directly to Drake and on to the Champion. According to the game he never beat Glacia because he reset over it, but he did still beat them all in order-
yeah he is really good at it! I was a little overwhelmed because i have never used speedups before but other than that i think the pace was pretty even!
Yeah, it was such a different tone in comparison to a Shen/Chris race without speedups. It was nice to see how close it got despite the speedups, though, yeah!
I gotta say, the speed ups made this less enjoyable to watch. It was so fast, harder to keep track of as a viewer, and I miss the game audio. I prefer a longer run at normal speed. Just my two cents.

Personally, hard disagree, at least specifically for warp rando - most of the stuff you skip over with speedup (running between loading zones and running from encounters) is just dead time where you're not actually dealing with any mechanics (as far as the warp rando is concerned). The interesting part of warp rando isn't in the battles/encounters or running around the map, it's figuring out how all the warps connect, and then (in this format) backtracking through your notes to string the gyms and e4 together in order. Same reason the regular speedchoice has stuff like instant text added; just think of speedup as the "instant text" option, but applied to both running and text boxes. Buying/using repels, waiting for text boxes during battles, or waiting on save just makes the race arbitrarily longer for no real gain. If there were leaderboards or something with defined rules like that, then sure disallow speedup, but I think in casual races like this, speedup absolutely should be allowed, save them and everyone else 2-3hrs, get to do/watch more races.
@@Californ1a At the same time, this *is* a livestream so all of that dead time is nice time to interact with viewers, it gives people time to think about what they need to do, where they've been, time to track, and just... breathe. Quality over quantity is the phrase, and I, personally, feel as though the quality of this race was lower thanks to speed-ups. To each their own, though! We all have our preferences and there are plenty of races with Shen or solo speedruns that don't have speed-ups so perhaps the variation isn't such a bad thing :3
@@aiden3648 Maybe I'm just more used to smant's style, where he's *constantly* narrating what he's doing while reading chat, managing his tracker, and playing. If you go watch smant's side of the race in his twitch past broadcasts, you'll see he's constantly talking. However, chat for this one was in emote only (as it always is in smant's stream for warp rando races, to avoid spoils), but he still keeps up with his mod's messages in chat even with all the emote spam. Personally, I don't think you should have "time to breath" during a race... it's a race, not a co-op. Being able to manage your tracker and think about where to go is part of the mechanics of a warp rando - faster thinking and tracker management allow you to save even more time than normal because it lets you use more speedup when you’re quicker at figuring out where to go next and marking down the connections, rather than standing around trying to figure out what to do. I think the quality was lower this time, but it had nothing to do with the speedup - Chris usually chats with whoever he's racing against, but smant mutes himself in the call because he talks so much he didn't want to give away info, so Chris had no one to banter with like he normally would, and he didn't mute himself so he just stayed quiet most the time to not give away info. The real quality loss is the lack of banter between the two like he would with shen.
I have to disagree. I tend to lose focus and stop watching during non-sped up warp randos because there just isn't anything interesting happening... As opposed to, say, a key item randomizer, most of the things that happen in a warp rando do not even progress the game in a tangible way.
Speedups really take all the chill out of this and make it annoying to watch tbh, it doesn't even really feel like Pokemon anymore when it's all sped up.

I prefer speed ups, but they put Chris at a huge disadvantage imo because he has no exp using them. Save states too.
